Comparación mediante el empleo de los caracteres merísticos y el crecimiento de caballas originarias de varias regiones geográficas (Cataluña, Islas Canarias y Sudamerica) OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G..
Mackerel from SW Atlantic (22° -39°S) and the coast of Cataluña (42° 30'N) were compared by analizing both morphometric and meristic characters. A multivariate analysis, i.e. principal components was used. The growth curves corresponding to mackerels from different regions (Canarias, North of Chile, Mar del Plata and Rincón in Argentine) were also compared, as well as the mean length at ages 1 and 2 (Mar del Plata- Cataluña, Rincón- Cataluña). Significant differences in the growth were found between two groups. The first group was integrated by three SW Atlantic population (Brasil, Mar del Plata, Rincón), which possible conform a subspecies of Scomber japonicus. The second one was represented by the coastal mackerel off Cataluña.

Identificación y morfometría de las mandibulas de Loligo gahi y Loligo sanpaulensis (Cephalopoda, Loliginidae) del Atlántico Sudoccidental OceanDocs
Pineda, S.E.; Aubone, A.; Brunetti, N.E..
Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or...

Description of Illex argentinus beaks and rostral length relationships with size and weight of squids. OceanDocs
Brunetti, N.E.; Ivanovic, M.L..
A description of Illex argentinus beaks, made on the basis of qualitative and quantitative characteristics, is presented. Likewise the equations that represent the relationships between the rostral length of each beak with the mantle length and total weight of squids are proposed, as a tool for reconstructing them. A total of 291 squids, comprising the complete size range, from juveniles to adults, were analyzed for the latter purpose. The morphometric description was made on a total of 90 individuals from the Argentine Sea, taking the following measurements on each beak: rostral length, hood length, crest length, wing length and wing width. Results showed that Illex argentinus beaks present the general scheme of that corresponding to the Ommastrephidae...

Análisis espacio-temporal del estado nutricional de larvas de anchoíta Engraulis anchoita. Relación con las características hidrográficas y la disponibilidad de alimento OceanDocs
Díaz, M.V..
Nutritional condition studies allow the assessment of physiological state of each larva and thus, the establishment of favourable nursery areas which provide better survival and growth. In the present work, morphometrical, histological and biochemical techniques were employed to assess nutritional condition of anchovy, Engraulis anchoita, larvae captured in the Argentine Sea. Its results were complemented with oceanographic data and information about zooplankton abundances, both prey and predators of anchovy larvae. Anchovy larvae abundance and distribution would be mainly determined by physico-chemical variables. Even though no significant differences were found in larval nutritional condition among the studied areas, larval condition was slightly better...

Sobre la denominación específica del surel del sector bonaerense (Pisces, Fam. Carangidae). OceanDocs
Pacheco Tack, R.; Cousseau, M.B..
The aim of this paper is to discuss the validity of the taxonomic status formerly assigned to the rough scad inhabiting shelf waters off Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Until recently the species had been considered, mainly by Argentine authors, as Trachurus picturatus australis, on the basis of a description by Nani (1950). Other authors, however, consider that the only valid species for the West Atlantic is Trachurus lathami. In general terms, there references are based on rather scarce material for this region. In this paper, we compare meristic and morphometric data from 160 specimens collected off Mar del Plata. Statistical analysis of the characteristics lead us to conclude that the valid scientific name of the Argentine rough scad is Trachurus...

DIET OF DENDROPSOPHUS MICROCEPHALUS AND SCARTHYLA VIGILANS (ANURA: HYLIDAE) AT A LOCALITY IN NORTH-WESTERN VENEZUELA WITH NOTES ON MICROHABITAT OCCUPATION Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
FONSECA-PÉREZ,KIMBERLYN A.; MOLINA,CÉSAR; TÁRANO,ZAIDA.
ABSTRACT The coexistence of species with similar ecological requirements (food, space, time) has typically drawn attention of researchers because competition for resources is expected to be high. The diet and microhabitat occupation of two morphologically and ecologically similar species of Hylidae (Anura), Dendropsophus microcephalus and Scarthyla vigilans, were analyzed at a locality in north-western Venezuela, with the aim of addressing the potential for space and food competition between them. Diet was estimated through the analysis of stomach contents and microhabitat occupation was estimated through recordings of perch type, height and horizontal distance to water. Thirty-six prey categories (32 families, 4 orders) of arthropods were identified: 30...

Neri,Vanessa dos Santos; Sarmento,José Lindenberg Rocha; Borges,Laylson da Silva; Torres,Tatiana Saraiva; Sena,Luciano Silva; Oliveira,Max Brandão de; Sousa Júnior,Antônio de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to phenotypically characterize creole goats of the Moxotó, Azul, Canindé, Repartida, Marota, and Graúna breeds, comparing them with the Boer, Anglo Nubian, and Alpine exotic breeds, to identify the genetic groups of greater potential for carcass quality and resistance to infection caused by worm. Data on morphometric measurements were obtained for the count of worm eggs in grams of feces (WEGF), Famacha score, carcass measurements, and body weight from 308 animals, in a farm in the state of Piauí, Brazil. Repartida goats showed the highest average for wither height (61.55 cm) and rump height (62.16 cm), and Moxotó goats had the greatest ear length (13.45 cm). The Moxotó breed showed the highest means for carcass and...

Quantitative measures of leaf epidermal cells as a taxonomic and phylogenetic tool for the identification of Stanhopea species (Orchidaceae) Phyton
Foroughbakhch,R; Ferry Sr,RJ; Hernández-Piñero,JL; Alvarado-Vázquez,MA; Rocha-Estrada,A.
Orchids of the genus Stanhopea are currently identified only by their floral structure characteristics. A statistical analysis of a significant number of species of this genus disclosed that measurements of adaxial and abaxial epidermal cell surface areas can be correlated with specific recognized species by a leaf printing method. This allows an objectively either positive or nearly positive confirmation of the identity of a species in the absence of flowers and without damage to plants. When ordering the mean values obtained for these surface areas in each species in a decreasing order, a correlation was observed in a hierarchical way that went from primitive to more advanced floral forms. This reflects the evolutionary radiation of the genus. It is...

Morphometric analysis of the Brasiliorchis picta complex (Orchidaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Pinheiro,Fábio; Barros,Fábio de.
One of the largest genera of Orchidaceae in the Neotropics with about 450 species, Maxillaria presents several taxonomic uncertainties about its generic circumscription and the delimitation of species groups, mainly due to the large variability of some species. The present study aims at verifying the morphological variation and species delimitation in the Brasiliorchis picta complex, a recent new genus derived from Maxillaria, using morphometric multivariate analysis. A total of 340 specimens belonging to six species (B. chrysantha (Barb. Rodr.) R.B. Singer, S. Koehler & Carnevali, B. gracilis (Lodd.) R.B. Singer, S. Koehler & Carnevali, B. marginata (Lindl.) R.B. Determining the Best Sectioning Method and Intestinal Segment for Morphometric Analysis in Broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Gava,MS; Moraes,LB; Carvalho,D; Chitolina,GZ; Fallavena,LCB; Moraes,HLS; Herpich,J; Salle,CTP.
Brazilian poultry production is very efficient and demands maximum broiler performance. Therefore, digestive system pathologies have a relevant role. Considering it is difficult to obtain consistent information on intestinal morphometric analysis, this study aimed at establishing essential and clear criteria for the collection of intestinal segments for morphometric analysis. Fifteen 13-d-old broilers were sacrificed and three intestinal segments were collected per bird. Two 3-cm long sections were obtained from each of the intestinal segments. Samples were collected open or closed. The closed samples were transversely, hemicylindrically, or longitudinally sectioned. Samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
