Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or... |

A description of Illex argentinus beaks, made on the basis of qualitative and quantitative characteristics, is presented. Likewise the equations that represent the relationships between the rostral length of each beak with the mantle length and total weight of squids are proposed, as a tool for reconstructing them. A total of 291 squids, comprising the complete size range, from juveniles to adults, were analyzed for the latter purpose. The morphometric description was made on a total of 90 individuals from the Argentine Sea, taking the following measurements on each beak: rostral length, hood length, crest length, wing length and wing width. Results showed that Illex argentinus beaks present the general scheme of that corresponding to the Ommastrephidae... |

To determine the existence of different population units of longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus) of the Argentine Sea, the meristic and morphometric characters of 861 specimens from two different areas were studied measuring 24 body distances with the landmark methods. Besides, the relation among weight, width and thickness of 806 pairs of sagittae otoliths as a function of length and sex of individuals was analyzed. Using the General Linear Model, the Principal Component Analysis and the Multivariate Analysis of Variance the fitted morphometric variables, the meristic characters and their relation to the Area and Sex factors were assessed. The variability observed does not show any conclusive evidence about the existence of more than one stock in the... |

The aim of this paper is to discuss the validity of the taxonomic status formerly assigned to the rough scad inhabiting shelf waters off Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Until recently the species had been considered, mainly by Argentine authors, as Trachurus picturatus australis, on the basis of a description by Nani (1950). Other authors, however, consider that the only valid species for the West Atlantic is Trachurus lathami. In general terms, there references are based on rather scarce material for this region. In this paper, we compare meristic and morphometric data from 160 specimens collected off Mar del Plata. Statistical analysis of the characteristics lead us to conclude that the valid scientific name of the Argentine rough scad is Trachurus... |

ABSTRACT The coexistence of species with similar ecological requirements (food, space, time) has typically drawn attention of researchers because competition for resources is expected to be high. The diet and microhabitat occupation of two morphologically and ecologically similar species of Hylidae (Anura), Dendropsophus microcephalus and Scarthyla vigilans, were analyzed at a locality in north-western Venezuela, with the aim of addressing the potential for space and food competition between them. Diet was estimated through the analysis of stomach contents and microhabitat occupation was estimated through recordings of perch type, height and horizontal distance to water. Thirty-six prey categories (32 families, 4 orders) of arthropods were identified: 30... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to phenotypically characterize creole goats of the Moxotó, Azul, Canindé, Repartida, Marota, and Graúna breeds, comparing them with the Boer, Anglo Nubian, and Alpine exotic breeds, to identify the genetic groups of greater potential for carcass quality and resistance to infection caused by worm. Data on morphometric measurements were obtained for the count of worm eggs in grams of feces (WEGF), Famacha score, carcass measurements, and body weight from 308 animals, in a farm in the state of Piauí, Brazil. Repartida goats showed the highest average for wither height (61.55 cm) and rump height (62.16 cm), and Moxotó goats had the greatest ear length (13.45 cm). The Moxotó breed showed the highest means for carcass and... |

One of the largest genera of Orchidaceae in the Neotropics with about 450 species, Maxillaria presents several taxonomic uncertainties about its generic circumscription and the delimitation of species groups, mainly due to the large variability of some species. The present study aims at verifying the morphological variation and species delimitation in the Brasiliorchis picta complex, a recent new genus derived from Maxillaria, using morphometric multivariate analysis. A total of 340 specimens belonging to six species (B. chrysantha (Barb. Rodr.) R.B. Singer, S. Koehler & Carnevali, B. gracilis (Lodd.) R.B. Singer, S. Koehler & Carnevali, B. marginata (Lindl.) R.B. Brazilian poultry production is very efficient and demands maximum broiler performance. Therefore, digestive system pathologies have a relevant role. Considering it is difficult to obtain consistent information on intestinal morphometric analysis, this study aimed at establishing essential and clear criteria for the collection of intestinal segments for morphometric analysis. Fifteen 13-d-old broilers were sacrificed and three intestinal segments were collected per bird. Two 3-cm long sections were obtained from each of the intestinal segments. Samples were collected open or closed. The closed samples were transversely, hemicylindrically, or longitudinally sectioned. Samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The number of microscopic... |

ABSTRACT Feed costs are the main limiting factors in poultry industry and alternative sources of food and/or feed supplements to optimize the bird´s life cycle and to extend their production period need to be explored. This study evaluated morphometric parameters of the small intestine and gonadotropin transcript levels in Isa Brown laying hens supplemented with glutamine + glutamic acid (Aminogut®) during a second production cycle. Molting was induced and groups of 100 hens each, were supplemented with 0, 0.8, 1.6 or 2.4% Aminogut® in their diet. At the end of the experimental period, tissue sections from duodenum, jejunum and ileum were processed by the Hematoxylin-Eosin technique and samples from hypothalamus and hypophysis were collected for RT-PCR... |

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance, egg quality and morphometry of the reproductive tract, liver, pancreas and tongue of laying hens submitted to different molting methods. Two hundred and eighty eight 72-week-old Isa brown layers were distributed according to a completely randomized design with six treatments (molting methods) and six replicates of eight birds each. Layers were fed diets containing 3000 ppm zinc oxide, 60 ppm or 120 ppm nicarbazin, 30 ppm or 60 ppm salinomycin, or were submitted to feed fasting. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by the test of Tukey at 5% probability level. Molting methods alternative to feed fasting were effective to induce molting in layer and provided good... |
