Since 2014 in France, in Charente maritime and Vendée, farmed and stocks of blue mussels experienced strong mortality events. In this context, the « MORBLEU » research project (DPMA-Ifremer agreement) was initiated to explore potentially aggravating factors, associated or correlated with mortality of mussels. Here, the work is to study biotic factors in mussels environment, looking for describe diversity and evolution of microbial communities (water column) before, during and after mortality events using NGS technology (metabarcoding) for environmental DNA analysis. We present, sampling strategy used from 2015 to 2018, Material & Methods and some preliminary results. |

The monitoring network IFREMER /REMORA is assessing on a yearly basis, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year class ; and "adults" = two-years class), deployed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale) ; it must not be considered as an accurate estimation of professional oyster ongrowings. Based on REMORA results, generally tallied with professional observations, 1998 on the whole was a second year of low mortality. However several areas remained affected by significant mortalities : the baie des Veys (in Normandy), Morlaix and Pen-Bé (in Brittany) and Marennes (in... |

The phenomenon of summer mortalities of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas is observed in France since the beginning of the 90's. These mortalities are classically associated to younger stages and summer temperatures and occur during the reproduction period of the animal. The studies undertaken during the project Morest (2001-2005), showed that a number of biological and environmental risks, the interaction of them induces lethal stresses for animals in physiological weakness, exists in summer. Among these risks, that which is withstood by the oysters bred close to the sediment proved to be significant in intertidal areas. In Quiberon bay (southern Brittany, France), the breeding practices of sowing oysters in deep water is thus likely to expose... |
