The genus Oxalis in southern Africa contains more than 200 species, with the vast bulk of species in the Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR). Recent fieldwork has suggested that many await discovery. Here we investigate the identity of two apparently undescribed Oxalis species from Northern Cape, South Africa, using morphological comparisons with closely related taxa. We provide a preliminary phylogenetic placement using DNA sequence-based analyses of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. Both putative new species are distinguished from all known Oxalis species based on macro-morphological traits. Molecular data placed both within a clade consisting of the weedy O. pes-caprae and its close relatives. Oxalis hirsutibulba sp. nov. is characterised by... |

Two new species of the genus Lessingianthus (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) from Brazil and Paraguay are described and illustrated. Lessingianthus cipoensis is characterized by the presence of solitary heads disposed in short branches and ovate to elliptical leaves. It has a certain resemblance to L. vestitus, which has more branched inflorescences, with long branches, and lanceolate to obovate-lanceolate leaves. Lessingianthus paraguariensis is closely related to L. asteriflorus and L. mollissimus, but it can be distinguished by the broadly elliptical leaves and the large size of the outer phyllaries. |

Polynemus multifilis Temminck & Schlegel, 1843, is redescribed and its synonymy, authorship, type material status and distribution are discussed. In addition, a new species, P. kapuasensis, previously identified as P. multifilis, is described from the Kapuas River, western Kalimantan, Indonesia on the basis of 12 specimens. Polynemus kapuasensis differs from P. multifilis in having higher counts of pectoral filaments (usually 15 on each side of body vs. 14 in the latter), pored lateral line scales [mode 103 (range 100-110) vs. 86 (83- 99)], scale rows above lateral line [10 (9-11) vs. 8 (7 or 8)] and caudal peduncle scales [38 (35-40) vs. 32 (28- 37)], and a shorter pectoral fin [mean 31% (range 29-33%) of standard length], its posterior tip not... |

The present collection was made on the south and west coasts of Madagascar between 90 en 465 meters depth and includes 17 species of calyptoblastic hydroids, belonging to six families: Campanulinidae, Lafoeidae, Campanulariidae, Syntheciidae, Sertulariidae and Plumulariidae. Twelve are recorded for the first time from Madagascar, while three of these are new for the Indian Ocean and one is described as new (Tulpa costata). Endemic species represent half of the collection and are numerically more important than cosmopolitan, tropical-indopacific, and southern species. A comparative study of bathymetrical characteristics of species from Madagascar and around the world allows to distinguish three groups of species: deepsea species, which have a very wide... |

In this Part, 37 species of the genus, belonging to eight species-groups, are described and figured, and their phylogenetics and biogeography are discussed. Seven of the species are described as new: P. ecuadorae, friburgensis, marthae, onorei, pulawskii, riopretensis, yucatani. One species-name, P. tolteca Lucas, 1895, is recalled from synonymy and one name, P. lycaon Banks, 1945, is upgraded from varietal to species status. The following 49 names are newly synonymized (valid names first): P. grossa (Fabricius, 1798) = P. formosus Say, 1823, P. affinis Dahlbom, 1845, P. obliquerugosa Lucas, 1895, P. nephele Lucas, 1895, P. theresiae Kriechbaumer, 1900, P. colombica Brèthes, 1926, P. pattoni Banks, 1945, P. pellita Haupt, 1952; P. aquila Lucas, 1895 = P.... |

Seven species of the scarab genus Onthophagus Latreille are keyed and described. They are all characterized by the possession of large eyes (in full-face view), a feature possibly related to nocturnal habits. Traditionally these species are placed in Micronthophagus Balthasar, which is here argued to be a polyphyletic group. Five species are new: paroculus (Sumatra), setoculus (Sumatra), sideki (Sumatra, Borneo), phillippsorum (Borneo), collinsi (Borneo). Of two old species, O. drescheri Paulian and rotundicollis Lansberge, new records are given. |
