A NOVEL GREEN BIOREFINERY CONCEPT: Protein refining by lactic acid fermentation and biogas production from green biomass Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria.
The extraction of proteins from leaves, integrated in a green biorefinery, may represent an attractive solution to the increasing demand for protein-rich animal feeds while decreasing the dependency on soybean imports. Thereby such green biorefineries could contribute to the development of more self-sufficient and sustainable agricultural systems in Europe. The framework of this PhD study is a green biorefinery concept for the production of protein concentrate, biogas and fertilizer from organic and locally grown green crops like alfalfa, clover or grass. After the screw pressing of the fresh crops, lactic acid fermentation of the green juice with Lactobacillus salivarius BC 1001 was assessed as the key method for the recovery of proteins. A leaf protein...

Muuruvesi college and organic farm Organic Eprints
Muuruvesi Organic Farm (owned by the Savo Vocational College) is situated in Eastern Fin-land (63° N 28° E). The fields of Muuruvesi farm have been under organic farming partly since 1988 and the whole farm since 1995. The arable area is 145 hectares and the soil type is mainly silt, containing 3-6 % organic matter. The crop rotation consists of silage, pasture, hay, oats, barley and peas. The farm has had organic milk production since 1998. There are 60 cows and average milk yield is 9,500 kg/year. A new cowshed was built in 2001 and now it is possible to make feeding experiments with cows in 2-3 groups. There is also 3,000 m² of greenhouse are in the organic production of tomatoes and cucumber and some pepper, honeydew melon and aubergine.

PARasites in Organic Livestock: innovative solutions to new challenges Organic Eprints
Parasites are ubiquitous in livestock in general and organic livestock in particular due to manage-ment factors promoting transmission (pastures/outdoor runs, plenty of bedding, restrictive use of parasiticides). The parasites cause poor animal welfare, production losses, disease, and non-uniform products. Pig helminths with hard-shelled eggs are difficult to control, as the eggs are highly resistant and may survive for years. The present project focuses on reducing the transmission of hard-shelled eggs to growing pigs by investigating 1) long-term survival of eggs on pastures (for optimising pasture rotation), 2) inactivation of eggs in bedding material (reducing transmission), and 3) a novel approach in bio-inactivation of eggs (chitin-degrading...

Biorefining of proteins from grass clover as an innovative solution to a truly sustainable organic production Organic Eprints
Fog, Erik; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette.
To shape a common solution to challenges with low crop yields, proper protein supply and insufficient climate mitigation capacity, biorefining of protein feed from grassland crops for monogastric animals (including human) is introduced to the organic production system. Bio-refining using mechanical and natural fermentation techniques are compatible with the organic principles and standards. Crop yields from Danish field trials with alfalfa, clover and grass-clover mixtures demonstrate average yields around 12 tons dry matter per hectare yielding on average 700 kg extracted protein per hectare and 3000 to 6000 m3 methane per hectare. With these yields the profitability of biorefining of organic protein feed is calculated and shows a positive economic...

Conversion to Organic Milk Production (OF0103) Organic Eprints
Haggar, Roger; Padel, Susanne.
This is the final report from the Defra project OF0103 In the UK fewer than 50 dairy farms were registered as organic in June 1995. The slow increase of farmers willing to convert to organic milk production was seen as one impediment for development of the organic milk market. The overall objective of this joint 3-year project was to monitor the physical, environmental and financial implications of conversion to organic milk production on a research farm (Ty Gwyn) and ten commercial farms in southwest England and Wales, in order to provide policy makers and farmers with more information about the consequences of conversion. Although the size of the sample is comparably small it represents about 20% of all organic dairy farms in the UK and an even larger...

Development of phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities in soils of annual cropland and permanent grassland in an organic farm Organic Eprints
Ohm, M.; Paulsen, H.M.; Eichler-Löbermann, B.; Rahmann, G..
The essential nature of Phosphorus (P) in plant growth and the finite amount of P resources have result in the question: what kind of management in farming systems can lead to P sufficiency in organic farming? The release of acid and alkaline phosphatases of plant and microbes promote the plant availability of soil P. The presented results show a significant higher enzyme activity at permanent grassland (PG) than at arable land with annual crops at an organic farm in Northern Germany. Therefore livestock systems with PG for grazing ruminants seem to have high potential to improve on-farm P-cycles via feed and manure flows even to annual cropland. These systems can profit from the nutrient transfer from PG to arable land through the use of manures. Enhance...

Organic Eprints
Berchielli, Telma Teresinha; Messana, Juliana Duarte; Canesin, Roberta Carrilho.

Demonstration-scale protein recovery by lactic acid fermentation from grass clover – a single case of the production of protein concentrate and press cake silage for animal feeding trials Organic Eprints
Santamaria-Fernandez, Maria; Ambye-Jensen, Morten; Damborg, Vinni K.; Lübeck, Mette.
There is an increasing interest in green biorefineries for the utilization of green biomass to provide a variety of valuable products. Proteins can be extracted from green biomasses such as alfalfa, clover, or grass and separated into protein-rich concentrates suitable for feeding to monogastric animals. Press cake suitable for feeding ruminant animals is also produced. Full implementation of such a green biorefinery requires knowledge and experience of production at demonstration scale. Moreover, product evaluation in animal-feeding trials requires a large amount of product. There has been collaboration in Denmark between several partners from industry and academia to assess the practicality and scalability of a green biorefining plant producing protein...

Organic Forage Crop Production in Atlantic Zones: an Ecophysiological Approach Organic Eprints
Pedrol, Nuria; Martínez, Antonio.
Within a schedule of long-term organic forage crop rotations, two mixed stands of ryegrass-clover were evaluated as following crops after winter cereal-legume mixtures under different sowing and tillage methods in Asturias (N. Spain). Significant differences were found in productivity, sward components, chemical composition and in growth dynamics. The crop sequence perennial ryegrass-white clover established under a triticale-field bean canopy produced an additional 6 t DM/ha, compared with oat-vetch followed by Italian ryegrass-red clover under regular post-harvest sowing, thus being a promising method for improving organic forage productions with minimum tillage. Changes in productivity and feeding values observed for both these ryegrass-clover swards...
