The Discussion Paper 39 represents the results of an analysis for determining influencing factors on profits and profitability of Russian enterprises in the region of Omsk. Based on the final yearly reports of the enterprises it is shown, that in Russia five earning ratios can be distinguished: the gross profit, the profit on sales, the profit before taxes, the profit on ordinary activity, and the net profit. The gross profit and the profit on sales are similar for all tested enterprises. Therefore, in this article only the gross profit, or the profitability of the gross profit are discussed. For the year 2000, the average profitability of the gross profit of the examined enterprises amounted to 2,0%. The profitability on the basis of the profit before... |

The performance of over 500 North Dakota farms, 2005-2006, is summarized using 16 financial measures. Farms are categorized by geographic region, farm type, farm size, gross cash sales, farm tenure, net farm income, debt-to-asset, and age of farmer to analyze relationships between financial performance and farm characteristics. Five-year averages, 2001-2005, and farm financial trends for the 1997-2006 period are also presented. In 2006, median and average acreage per farm was 1,966 and 2,386, respectively. Median and average cash farm revenue was $281,751 and $361,418, respectively. Financial performance is volatile. Year-to-year changes in median net farm income within regions and farm types averaged 50 percent from 1997 to 2006. Median net farm income... |

In 1995, the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) collaborated with the Research and Education Division of the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) in developing a needs assessment tool to identify the most important health and productivity factors for the sheep industry. In collaboration with the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), a statistically designed producer sample was selected to provide estimates for the United States sheep population in the 48 contiguous states. The NAHMS/ASI questionnaires were mailed to 19,807 sheep operations in January 1996; data were received and summarized from 5,174 respondents. It was estimated that in the 48 contiguous states, there were 82,040 operations with sheep as of 1995;... |

This study evaluated the impacts of farm size and stochastic return variability on no-till (NT) rice profitability at the whole-farm level. Mixed integer programming was used to determine optimal machinery complements, fuel consumption, and machinery labor requirements for conventional till (CT) and NT rice-soybean farms of 1200, 2400, and 3600 acres in size. Crop yields, market prices, and prices for key production inputs were simulated to construct stochastic whole-farm net returns for each farm size under CT and NT management, and both first and second degree stochastic dominance analysis were used to rank cumulative distribution functions of whole-farm returns according to specified risk preferences. The results indicate NT farms exhibit second degree... |

The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of the economic policies on the Argentinean Agricultural sector for the period 1980-2007. By evaluating the changes that have been taken place in the production styles and the role played by the rise in profitability of cereals, oleaginous crops and beef cattle, we seek to identify the main elements that will allow us to understand the general path that the sector has taken for the period under analysis. After explaining the general evolution of the sector, we end up our analysis identifying the future challenges that the country will face regarding food security, health regulations and environmental problems. |

Soil acidity is one of the major farm management problems on the Southern Tablelands of NSW. Soil acidity occurs naturally and yet some agricultural practices exacerbate the process through nitrification, leaching, removal of produce and accumulation of organic matter in the soil. A grazing experiment was conducted between 1999 and 2008 near Sutton, NSW, to assess the impact of various combinations of lime and superphosphate application, and stocking rates, on the profitability and sustainability of wool production on the Southern Tablelands. The profitability of 15 alternative experimental treatments was assessed using the discounted cash flow analysis method for a Merino wether enterprise. The results revealed that the highest net present value was... |

This paper examines the competitiveness of cereal production in selected EU member states, during the period 1996 2000. Profitability was selected as a measure of competitive performance and costs of production, value of output and partial productivity indicators were examined as possible sources (potential) of competitive performance. Using data from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) the analysis showed that productivity levels in the UK, Ireland and France were consistently higher then competing countries Denmark, Germany and Italy. In terms of profitability, the opportunity cost of owned resources had a major impact on the competitiveness of cereal production within the EU. Cash costs as a percentage of total output were lowest in Italy but in... |

The objective of this research is to assess the financial performance of North Dakota farm supply and grain handling cooperatives between 2002 and 2006. Audited financial statements from 120 cooperatives were used. Various financial variables are tested as determinants of profitability. Financial ratio analysis is used to observe trends in liquidity, solvency, and efficiency. Comparisons in ratio trends are made based on relative profitability. No statistical relationship is found between business size and profitability. The most profitable North Dakota agricultural input supply and grain marketing cooperatives were observed to have financial ratio values distinct from less profitable ones. |

Discussion Paper 32 contains information on property relations and profitability of 100 Russian large-scale farm enterprises, gathered in interviews in the Volgograd region in 2000. They are an integrated part of research activities concerning the privatisation and restructuring of farm enterprises in Central and Eastern Europe and take up the subject of Discussion Paper 18. 31 questions were formulated. The answers were evaluated using multivariate statistical methods. Comprehensive knowledge was obtained about number and size of land and capital shares, voting mode, indebtedness, cost of social security contributions for the employees and of the support for household plots and ensuing consequences for the profitability of enterprises. Within a farm, land... |
