Maatschappelijke kostenbatenanalyse voor de visserij: Een verkenning naar een MKBA in een mariene omgeving AgEcon
Buisman, F.C.; Vos, Birgit I. de.
An SCBA is an important valuation instrument for big infrastructural projects. However, most of the investment projects for which an SCBA is performed are land-based projects. Performing an SCBA for projects in a marine environment involve other valuation issues. These are studied in this report based on the fisheries.

Practical fixed-effects estimation methods for the three-way error-components model AgEcon
Andrews, Martyn; Schank, Thorsten; Upward, Richard.
Methods for fixed-effects estimation of the three-way error-components model are not yet standard. Where possible, we make the fixed-effects methods originally developed by Abowd, Kramarz, and Margolis (Econometrica 67: 251–333) for linked worker-firm data more accessible. We also show how these methods can be implemented in Stata. There is a caveat, however. If the researcher wants to recover estimates of the error components themselves, and the number of units at the higher level of aggregation is large, memory or matrix constraints may make using Stata to estimate the components themselves infeasible.

Speaking Stata: Identifying spells AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Spells in time series (and more generally in any kind of one-dimensional series) may be defined as sequences of observations that are homogeneous in some sense. For example, a categorical variable may remain in the same state, or values of a measured variable may satisfy the same true–false condition. Devices for working with spells in Stata include marking the start of each spell with indicator variables and tagging spells with integer codes. Panel data are easy to handle with the by: prefix. Some kinds of spell identification require two passes through the data, as when only spells of some minimum length are of interest or short gaps are tolerable within spells. Many questions concerning spells are easy to answer given careful use of by: and appropriate...

Multinomial goodness–of–fit: Large–sample tests with survey design correction and exact tests for small samples AgEcon
Jann, Ben.
I introduce the new mgof command to compute distributional tests for discrete (categorical, multinomial) variables. The command supports largesample tests for complex survey designs and exact tests for small samples as well as classic large-sample x2-approximation tests based on Pearson’s X2, the likelihood ratio, or any other statistic from the power-divergence family (Cressie and Read, 1984, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B (Methodological) 46: 440–464). The complex survey correction is based on the approach by Rao and Scott (1981, Journal of the American Statistical Association 76: 221–230) and parallels the survey design correction used for independence tests in svy: tabulate. mgof computes the exact tests by using Monte Carlo methods...

Targeting the poor and smallholder farmers: empirical evidence from Malawi AgEcon
Houssou, Nazaire; Zeller, Manfred.
This paper develops low cost, reasonably accurate, and simple models for improving the targeting efficiency of development policies in Malawi. Using a stepwise logistic regression (weighted) along with other techniques applied in credit scoring, the research identifies a set of easily observable and verifiable indicators for correctly predicting whether a household is poor or not, based on the 2004-05 Malawi Integrated Household Survey data. The predictive power of the models is assessed using out-of-sample validation tests and receiver operating characteristic curves, whereas the model’s robustness is evaluated by bootstrap simulation methods. Finally, sensitivity analyses are performed using the international and extreme poverty lines. The models...

Returns to policy-related social science research in agriculture AgEcon
Gardner, Bruce L..
Policy research is valuable as a source of information for decisionmakers. The value of research is the expected social gain from policy decisions influenced by the information generated. The gain from a decision depends on choosing the best policy given the state of the world, which is uncertain. The output of policy research is a conclusion about that state. Taking a Bayesian approach, the ex ante value of a research program is estimated from information about decisionmakers’ prior probabilities of the state of the world and the likelihood of correct and incorrect research findings. Case studies of U.S. agricultural policy research cover consequences of trade liberalization, farm commodity program analysis, effects of publicly supported commodity...

Speaking Stata: On getting functions to do the work AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Functions in Stata take two main forms, built-in functions that are part of the executable and egen functions written in Stata’s own language. These are surveyed, giving a variety of tips and tricks, and noting the large number of user-written egen functions available for download from the Internet. Two substantial examples, the calculation of percentile ranks and plotting positions, and the calculation of measures summarizing properties of the other members of a group, provide detailed illustrations of egen in action.

Increased Cocoa Bean Exports under Trade Liberalization: A Gravity Model Approach AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Shaik, Saleem; Wozniak, Shawn J.; Allen, Albert J..
Gravity models were developed to estimate the potential bilateral exports of cocoa under trade liberalization by the sixteen major cocoa producing countries to the US using panel data from 1989 to 2003. The results indicate that differences between resource endowment, relative size of economies, and the sum of bilateral GDP of U.S. and exporting countries are the major determinants. Thus, as trade is liberalized, farmers share of the world price of cocoa increases and this raises exports.

Normative, systemic and procedural aspects: a review of indicator‐based sustainability assessments in agriculture AgEcon
Binder, Claudia R.; Feola, Giuseppe.
Several methods for assessing the sustainability of agricultural systems have been developed. These methods do not fully: (i) take into account the multi‐functionality of agriculture; (ii) include multidimensionality; (iii) utilize and implement the assessment knowledge; and (iv) identify conflicting goals and trade‐offs. This paper reviews seven recently developed multidisciplinary indicator‐based assessment methods with respect to their contribution to these shortcomings. All approaches include (1) normative aspects such as goal setting, (2) systemic aspects such as a specification of scale of analysis, (3) a reproducible structure of the approach. The approaches can be categorized into three typologies. The top‐down farm assessments focus on field or...

Estimation of Treatment Effect of Asthma Case Management Using Propensity Score Methods AgEcon
Brandt, Sylvia J.; Gale, Sara; Tager, Ira.
Objective: To estimate the treatment effect from participating in an asthma intervention that was part of the National Asthma Control Program. Study Setting: Data on children who participated in asthma case management (N=270) and eligible children who did not participate in case management (N=2,742) were extracted from a claims database. Study Design: We created 81 measures of health care utilization and 40 measures of neighborhood characteristics that could be related to participation in the program. The participation model was selected using the cross-validation-based Deletion Substitution and Addition (DSA) algorithm. We used optimal full matching for the vector of Mahalanobis’ distances and propensity scores to estimate the difference between...

Sufficient Conditions for Dominance of Simply Related Prospects AgEcon
Drynan, Ross G..
Sufficient conditions for dominance of simply related prospects are developed for newly defined classes of limited-variation-in-risk-parameter utility functions. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for classes of contant-risk-parameter utility functions. The latter include classes of quadratic, power and exponential utility functions. The conditions can be incorporated into easily implemented procedures for locating efficient prospects.

Spatially Delineated Public Goods and Spatially Located Public Bads: A Hedonic Approach to Measuring Urban Revitalization AgEcon
Brown, John; Geoghegan, Jacqueline.
A regression discontinuity approach is used to measure the impact of public-goods creating programs in a declining inner city neighborhood of Worcester Massachusetts. Using GIS data, we develop a hedonic model of residential sales, using a parcel-level GIS tax assessment and land use database linked to property sales data for the years 1988 through 2007, to test the effect of the creation of a new high-performing public school, as well as other locational amenities and disamenities on neighborhood housing prices, by comparing properties adjacent to either side of the school catchment area boundary.

Speaking Stata: How to face lists with fortitude AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Three commands in official Stata, foreach, forvalues, and for, provide structures for cycling through lists of values (variable names, numbers, arbitrary text) and repeating commands using members of those lists in turn. All these commands may be used interactively, and none is restricted to use in Stata programs. They are explained and compared in some detail with a variety of examples. In addition, a self-contained exposition is given on local macros, understanding of which is needed for use of foreach and forvalues.

Dynamic and Asymmetric Adjustment in Beef and Pork Prices AgEcon
Hahn, William F..
Beef and pork prices at farm, wholesale and retail are examined for evidence of a dynamic and asymmetric price transmission using an endogenous switching model. Dynamic adjustment means that it take time for prices to adjust to changes in the market. Price transmission is asymmetric if the speed or completeness of price adjustment depends on the direction that the price or a related price is moving. Some of the previous research on price transmission in agricultural markets attempts to use market power abuses as an explanation of price-transmission asymmetry. Other research shows that price transmission asymmetry can arise in competitive markets and that competitive and anti-competitive issues can make prices adjust faster upwards or downwards. By...
