Conservation value of a native forest fragment in a region of extensive agriculture BJB
CHIARELLO,A. G..
A survey of mammals and birds was carried out in a semi-deciduous forest fragment of 150 ha located in a zone of intensive agriculture in Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, south-eastern Brazil. Line transect sampling was used to census mammals and birds during six days, totalling 27.8 km of trails and 27.8 hours of observation. Twenty mammal species were confirmed in the area (except bats and small mammals), including rare or endangered species, such as the mountain lion (Puma concolor), the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), and the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). The brown capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) and the black-tufted-ear marmoset (Callithrix penicillata) were found frequently, suggesting high population density in the fragment. Regarding the...

Reproductive phenological patterns of cerrado plant species at the Pé-de-Gigante Reserve (Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, SP, Brazil): a comparison between the herbaceous and woody floras BJB
BATALHA,M. A.; MANTOVANI,W..
A natural vegetation area, with 1269 ha, composed mainly by cerrado, located at Santa Rita do Passa Quatro Municipality, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil (21°36-39'S, 47°36-38'W), was studied. From September 1995 to February 1997, a floristic survey was carried out, when all vascular plant species at reproductive stage were collected. The flowering and fruiting patterns of the community were studied, comparing the herbaceous and the woody species. In the herbaceous component, 239 species were found and, in the woody one, 108 species. The woody species flowered mainly at the beginning of the rainy season, while the herbaceous ones produced flowers generally at the end of that season. The proportion of anemo and autochorous species was greater in the...

Estimating the length of the first antiretroviral therapy regiment durability in São Paulo, Brazil BJID
Medeiros,Roseane; Diaz,Ricardo S.; Castelo Filho,Adauto.
Brazil was the first country to provide unrestricted, cost-free access to antiretroviral (ARV) medicine for AIDS treatment. However, there is little data about the benefits of such a policy for these patients. We evaluated the duration of benefit obtained with the introduction of ARVs, defined as the durability of the first ARV regiment. We reviewed the medical charts of patients attended from 1996-2000, at the outpatient clinics of the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 120 drug-naive HIV-1 infected patients were eligible to participate in the study. About half of the individuals (53%) presented with disease symptoms; 59% of them had CD4 count below 200 cells/mm³. Mean estimated duration of the benefit of therapy was 14.1 months. The most...

Establishment of the serologic testing algorithm for recent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroconversion (STARHS) strategy in the city of São Paulo, Brazil BJID
Kallas,Esper Georges; Bassichetto,Katia Cristina; Oliveira,Solange Maria; Goldenberg,Ieda; Bortoloto,Reginaldo; Moreno,Diva Maria Faleiros C.; Kanashiro,Cecilia; Chaves,Mariana Mellilo Sauer; Sucupira,Maria Cecilia A.; Diniz,Aparecido; Mesquita,Fabio C..
Several strategies aim at characterizing the AIDS epidemic in different parts of the world. Among these, the identification of recent HIV-1 infections using the recently described serologic testing algorithm for recent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroconversion (STARHS) strategy was employed in four testing sites of the City of São Paulo Public Health Department (CSPPHD). Those identified as recently infected were invited to participate in a prospective clinical and laboratory evaluation study. We describe the establishment of the patient identification network and the success in enrolling the participants, as well as their clinical and laboratory characteristics. From May to December 2002, 6,443 persons were tested for HIV in the four participating...

Clonal dissemination of VanA-type glycopeptide-resistant Enterococcus faecalis between hospitals of two cities located 100 km apart BJMBR
Moretti,M.L.; Bratfich,O.J.; Stucchi,R.B.; Levi,C.; Levin,A.S.; Duboc,G.M.; Vormittag,E.; Blum-Menezes,D..
Nosocomial dissemination of glycopeptide-resistant enterococci represents a major problem in hospitals worldwide. In Brazil, the dissemination among hospitals in the city of São Paulo of polyclonal DNA profiles was previously described for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. We describe here the dissemination of VanA phenotype E. faecalis between two hospitals located in different cities in the State of São Paulo. The index outbreak occurred in a tertiary care university hospital (HCUSP) in the city of São Paulo and three years later a cluster caused by the same strain was recognized in two patients hospitalized in a private tertiary care hospital (CMC) located 100 km away in the interior of the state. From May to July 1999, 10 strains of...

The effect of performing corrections on reported uterine cancer mortality data in the city of São Paulo BJMBR
Antunes,J.L.F.; Wünsch-Filho,V..
Reports of uterine cancer deaths that do not specify the subsite of the tumor threaten the quality of the epidemiologic appraisal of corpus and cervix uteri cancer mortality. The present study assessed the impact of correcting the estimated corpus and cervix uteri cancer mortality in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The epidemiologic assessment of death rates comprised the estimation of magnitudes, trends (1980-2003), and area-level distribution based on three strategies: i) using uncorrected death certificate information; ii) correcting estimates of corpus and cervix uteri mortality by fully reallocating unspecified deaths to either one of these categories, and iii) partially correcting specified estimates by maintaining as unspecified a fraction of deaths...

Ecological aspects of small strongylids in the Paraíba Valley Region, State of São Paulo, Brazil Ciência Rural
Pereira,José Roberto; Vianna,Sérgio Sebastião da Silva.
Post-mortem studies were conducted on twenty equids (16 horses and four mules) of the Paraíba Valley, during a period of twelve years (1988 to 2000) in order to establish the ecological descriptors of the different species of small strongylids (Subfamily Cyathostominae, Tribe Cyathostominea). Samples of 10% of total gastrointestinal content was examined and a total of 13,832 of Cyathostominea were obtained with a prevalence of 100%. The most prevalent and abundant species were Cylicocyclus nassatus (100%), Cylicostephanus longibursatus and Cylicostephanus goldi (95%). The population of Cyathotominea showed an average Dispersion Index (DI) of 49.03 and an average Green index (GI) of 0.226. The parasitic community had average diversity of 1.79, calculated by...
