Sugarcane is an economic important crop of Thailand. Physiology, genetics and molecular biology of sugarcane are of our interest. A wealth of data has been produced by both computational-based and chemical reagent-based experimental works such as EST-derived SSR markers, EST-derived SNP markers, protein markers identified by 2D-gel and LC-MS. These diverse data would be integrated to describe the meaningful relationships in biological processes of sugarcane. To achieve this goal, a bioinformatic system for sugarcane biology database has been established namely Thai sugarcane database (TSD). A section of TSD database collecting EST-derived SSR markers and EST-derived SNP markers is presented in this article. Another feature, web-based application is...

Development and Assessment of an Updated Tool for the Design of Soil and Water Conservation Structures in the Sugar Industry of South Africa CIGR Journal
Otim, Daniel; Smithers, Jeff; Senzanje, Aidan; van Antwerpen, Rianto; Thornton-Dibb, Sean LC.
Sugarcane in South Africa is grown on wide-ranging soils, sometimes in non-ideal climates and on steep topographies where soils are vulnerable to erosion. Sugarcane fields are protected against erosion through, inter alia, the use of engineered waterways, contour banks and spill-over roads. A comparison of design norms in the National Soil Conservation Manual and norms used in the sugar industry clearly shows discrepancies that need to be investigated. Furthermore, the sugar industry design nomograph was developed based on an unsustainable soil loss limit, does not include any regional variations of climate and the impact on soil erosion and runoff and does not include vulnerability during break cropping. The aim of this research was to develop and assess...

Operations scheduling of sugarcane production using fuzzy GERT method (part II: preserve operations, harvesting and ratooning) CIGR Journal
Monjezi, Nasim; Sheikhdavoodi, Mohammad Javad; Zakidizaji, Hasan; Marzban, Afshin; Shomeili, Mahmood.
This paper presents a GERT method based on fuzzy theory for solving fuzzy project scheduling of sugarcane production (preserve operations, harvesting and rationing) in Khuzestan province of Iran. In this method, activity duration time and loops, repetition number, and output activities from nodes of network belong to a fuzzy set. First, an analytical approach was proposed to simplify the structure of network. Then, GERT network computations were done based on evaluating nodes. Process outputs were scheduled network and project fuzzy completion time. These outputs were fuzzy numbers and can be analyzed by α- cut. Results prove that the method of using fuzzy numbers and fuzzy relation in project scheduling is a powerful tool to estimate time for agricultural...

Riparian forest potential to retain sediment and carbon evaluated by the 137Cs fallout and carbon isotopic ratio techniques Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pires,Luiz F.; Bacchi,Osny O.S.; Correchel,Vladia; Reichardt,Klaus; Filippe,Joseline.
Riparian forests can provide an important service for aquatic ecosystems by sequestering hillslopederived sediments. However, the width of a riparian buffer zone required to filter sediments is not yet wellunderstood. Here are used two complementary tracers to measure sediment retention. The 137Cs technique and the soil carbon isotopic ratios (δ13C) are utilized to investigate sediment deposition and erosion rates on a slope transect cultivated with sugarcane followed by a secondary riparian forest zone in Iracemápolis, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The 137Cs technique and the δ13C analysis showed that the width of a riparian vegetation in accordance to a Brazilian Environmental Law (Nº4.771/65) was not sufficient in trapping sediments coming from...

Optimization of RT-PCR reactions in studies with genes of lignin biosynthetic route in Saccharum spontaneum Anais da ABC (AABC)
LLERENA,JUAN P.P.; ARAÚJO,PEDRO; MAZZAFERA,PAULO.
ABSTRACT Saccharum spontaneum has been used for the development of energy cane a crop aimed to be used for the production of second-generation ethanol, or lignocellulosic ethanol. Lignin is a main challenge in the conversion of cell wall sugars into ethanol. In our studies to isolate the genes the lignin biosynthesis in S. spontaneum we have had great difficulty in RT-PCR reactions. Thus, we evaluated the effectiveness of different additives in the amplification of these genes. While COMT and CCoAOMT genes did not need any additives for other genes there was no amplification (HCT, F5H, 4CL and CCR) or the yield was very low (CAD and C4H). The application of supplementary cDNA was enough to overcome the non-specificity and low yield for C4H and C3H, while...

Potassium adsorption in soil cultivated with sugarcane Anais da ABC (AABC)
FREITAS,JOYCYELY M.A.S.; NETTO,ANDRÉ M.; CORRÊA,MARCUS M.; XAVIER,BRUNO T.L.; ASSIS,FERNANDO X. DE.
ABSTRACT Vinasse is a byproduct of the process of distillation of sugarcane juice for the manufacture of sugar and alcohol. Because it is rich in nutrients, mainly potassium (K), is used as fertilizer and applied via fertigation, without concerning for the fate of this compound in the soil. Thus, the objective of the study was to evaluate the interactions of the potassium ion (K+), applied via vinasse in a soil representative of the sugarcane zone of the State of Pernambuco using adsorption isotherms. The methodology was based on physical, chemical and soil mineralogical characterization, as well as equilibrium batch tests, where the experimental curves were fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The results allowed to infer that the Freundlich...

Occurrence of tayras (Eira barbara Linnaeus, 1758) with anomalous coloration in Cerrado remnants in the state of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Scrich,Vitória M.; Pônzio,Marcella C.; Pasqualotto,Nielson; Rodrigues,Thiago F.; Paolino,Roberta M.; Chiarello,Adriano G..
Abstract: Coloration anomalies are mainly genetically-based disorders in which body pigmentation is either reduced (hypopigmentation) or produced in excess (melanism), in parts or the totality of the body. Cases of hypopigmentation have been documented in many neotropical mammals, including the tayra (Eira barbara Linnaeus, 1758). We expand the account of anomalous coloration occurrence presenting new registers of hypopigmented tayras in Brazil. Data was collected during a mammal survey carried out in three agricultural landscapes within the Cerrado domain in the northeast of the state of São Paulo. We obtained two kinds of records of hypopigmented tayras, one from direct sighting and the other from a camera-trap. We discuss the likely implications of this...

Spatial variability of soil CO2 emission in different topographic positions Bragantia
Brito,Liziane de Figueiredo; Marques Júnior,José; Pereira,Gener Tadeu; La Scala Junior,Newton.
The spatial variability of soil CO2 emission is controlled by several properties related to the production and transport of CO2 inside the soil. Considering that soil properties are also influenced by topography, the objective of this work was to investigate the spatial variability of soil CO2 emission in three different topographic positions in an area cultivated with sugarcane, just after mechanical harvest. One location was selected on a concave-shaped form and two others on linear-shaped form (in back-slope and foot-slope). Three grids were installed, one in each location, containing 69 points and measuring 90 x 90 m each. The spatial variability of soil CO2 emission was characterized by means of semivariance. Spatial variability models derived from...

Biochemical and morphological responses to abiotc elicitor chitin in suspension-cultured sugarcane cells BABT
Gallão,Maria Izabel; Cortelazzo,Ângelo Luiz; Fevereiro,Manuel Pedro Salema; Brito,Edy Sousa de.
Cells of Saccharum officinarum submitted to hydrolyzated chitin for 1 to 8h produced phenolic compounds. These alterations were observed through cytochemical methods using Toluidine Blue and Phloroglucinol/HCl. After 4 h, besides cell wall change, there was a change in nuclear pattern of chitin treated cells. There was a 96% increase in nuclear area in 6 h chitin treated material, as observed by Feulgen reaction. The treated cells showed chromatin compacted regions and a degeneration process of nucleoli. In the outer areas of cell wall, there was a polysaccharide desagregation, confirming results obtained for different plants with the use of other elicitors. Peroxidase activity was maximal after 4 h and decreased progressively. PAL activity started to...
