This study evaluated fecal excretion by means of the internal indicator indigestible neutral detergent fiber (iNDF) and external indicators such as chromium complexed with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cr-EDTA) and ytterbium chloride (YbCl3), in addition to estimating the duodenal flow of dry matter and the total, ruminal and post-ruminal apparent digestibility coefficients. Eight crossbred Holstein x Zebu heifers were distributed into a 4 x 4 Latin square. Indicators Cr-EDTA, YbCl3 and iNDF did not efficiently estimate the fecal production (p < 0.05), with results of 1.64, 1.71 and 2.71 kg day-1, respectively, compared with the total feces collection, which resulted in 1.39 kg day-1. The estimated values of dry matter flow, both for the... |

This study evaluated the effect of different protein sources (soybean meal, cottonseed meal, peanut meal and sunflower meal) on dry matter and nutrient intake, productive performance and body measurements of dairy heifers, Holstein x Zebu, recreated in confinement. The experiment consisted in a randomized complete block design made up by 6 replications and 4 treatments. The mean values of ingestion of ether extract (EEI, kg day-1) were statistically different (p < 0.05). The neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI, %BW) also presented differences (p < 0.05), with higher values in the diet containing sunflower meal (1.01% BW) in relation to the diet with soybean meal (0.84% BW). The average daily weight gain using the diet with soybean meal was... |

A capacitive sensor method for measuring billet spacing uniformity with sugarcane (Saccharum officinarm L.) billet planter is investigated in this paper. Therefore, an electronic device based on capacitive sensor was designed and developed to predict the planting spacing of sugarcane billets. It consisted of four components: a rectangular parallel plate capacitor, electronic circuitry, microcontroller, and display unit. Accordingly, a prototype of the precision metering device for sugarcane billets was developed. After calibrating the monitoring system, the results were verified with calibrated curve by means of linear regression and paired T-test. The performance of the device, including quality of feed index (QFI), multiple index and miss index was... |

Sugarcane in South Africa is grown on wide-ranging soils, sometimes in non-ideal climates and on steep topographies where soils are vulnerable to erosion. Sugarcane fields are protected against erosion through, inter alia, the use of engineered waterways, contour banks and spill-over roads. A comparison of design norms in the National Soil Conservation Manual and norms used in the sugar industry clearly shows discrepancies that need to be investigated. Furthermore, the sugar industry design nomograph was developed based on an unsustainable soil loss limit, does not include any regional variations of climate and the impact on soil erosion and runoff and does not include vulnerability during break cropping. The aim of this research was to develop and assess... |

This paper presents a GERT method based on fuzzy theory for solving fuzzy project scheduling of sugarcane production (preserve operations, harvesting and rationing) in Khuzestan province of Iran. In this method, activity duration time and loops, repetition number, and output activities from nodes of network belong to a fuzzy set. First, an analytical approach was proposed to simplify the structure of network. Then, GERT network computations were done based on evaluating nodes. Process outputs were scheduled network and project fuzzy completion time. These outputs were fuzzy numbers and can be analyzed by α- cut. Results prove that the method of using fuzzy numbers and fuzzy relation in project scheduling is a powerful tool to estimate time for agricultural... |

ABSTRACT Vinasse is a byproduct of the process of distillation of sugarcane juice for the manufacture of sugar and alcohol. Because it is rich in nutrients, mainly potassium (K), is used as fertilizer and applied via fertigation, without concerning for the fate of this compound in the soil. Thus, the objective of the study was to evaluate the interactions of the potassium ion (K+), applied via vinasse in a soil representative of the sugarcane zone of the State of Pernambuco using adsorption isotherms. The methodology was based on physical, chemical and soil mineralogical characterization, as well as equilibrium batch tests, where the experimental curves were fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The results allowed to infer that the Freundlich... |

Abstract: Coloration anomalies are mainly genetically-based disorders in which body pigmentation is either reduced (hypopigmentation) or produced in excess (melanism), in parts or the totality of the body. Cases of hypopigmentation have been documented in many neotropical mammals, including the tayra (Eira barbara Linnaeus, 1758). We expand the account of anomalous coloration occurrence presenting new registers of hypopigmented tayras in Brazil. Data was collected during a mammal survey carried out in three agricultural landscapes within the Cerrado domain in the northeast of the state of São Paulo. We obtained two kinds of records of hypopigmented tayras, one from direct sighting and the other from a camera-trap. We discuss the likely implications of this... |

ABSTRACT Red rot, caused by Colletotrichum falcatum Went is the most important disease of sugarcane in India inflicting substantial loss to both cane industry and cane growers. To keep in view the importance of red rot disease of sugarcane, 117 accession of sugarcane germplasm including different Saccharum species and Indian and foreign commercial hybrids were tested against red rot with Cf 07, Cf 08 & Cf 09 (national pathotypes) by plug method of inoculation. Out of 117, 6 were found resistant and 12 were moderately resistant against red rot and rest were moderately susceptible/susceptible/highly susceptible. Theses resistance and moderately resistant accession can be further utilize to produce resistance varieties against the most devastating... |

Predaceous ant fauna present in natural sugarcane field plantations in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, was evaluated by using sardine baits sampling technique. Three-month-old sugarcane plants were used for ant fauna estimation in two sugarcane mills, São João and Barra Mill. Twelve 30m X 30 m (900 m²) plots were previously delimited in each sugarcane mill for ant sampling. Ants were sampled in each plot by placing nine sardine baits in 12 mm X 75 mm plastic tubes. In the São João Mill, the predominant ant species observed was Solenopsis saevissima, followed by Dorymyrmex sp. 1, Pheidole sp. 2, and Crematogaster sp. 1. Considering only ant genus, Solenopsis, Pheidole, Dorymyrmex, and Crematogaster, were predominant. In the Barra Mill, the predominant ant... |
