Thrips tabaci Lind.: é realmente uma praga do algodoeiro no Brasil? Anais da SEB
Monteiro,Renata C.; Zucchi,Roberto A.; Mound,Laurence A..
The occurence of Thrips tabaci Lind. on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was investigated. In the Brazilian literature T. tabaci has been mentioned as a common early season phytophagous pest of cotton. However, there are no references to collections (voucher specimens) or to identification methods that can clarify these records. In contrast, among many samples of thrips collected between 1992 and 1996 (mostly in 1995) on cotton, in 30 counties from five states and four geographic regions, not a single specimen was found. If T. tabaci occurs commonly on this crop in Brazil, even at relatively low populations, then at least some individuals should have been collected in this survey. Most of the thrips specimens taken from cotton were Frankliniella schultzei...

Mammals recorded in isolated remnants of Atlantic Forest in southern Goiás, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Calaça,Analice; Fachi,Marluci; Silva,Diego Afonso; Oliveira,Seixas Rezende; Melo,Fabiano Rodrigues de.
Abstract: Habitat fragmentation is one of the principal causes of the decline of species worldwide, and the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and Cerrado savanna biomes are among the most severely affected by this process. While highly fragmented, remnants of Atlantic Forest can still be found within the Cerrado domain of southern Goiás, where previous studies have revealed high levels of biodiversity. To inventory the mammalian species that occur in the region, two fragments of semideciduous Atlantic Forest were sampled between 2011 and 2016, using line transect surveys and camera trapping. A total of 1016 records were obtained of 30 mammal species, of which eleven are under some threat of extinction. The species richness recorded on this study was similar to or...

Raimundi,Erikcsen Augusto; Salles,Frederico Falcão; Souza-Franco,Gilza Maria de.
The first studies of Leptophlebiidae in the Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, dated from 1920. Since then, not much is known about the family (even to the Order Ephemeroptera) to the State. The main goal of this study was to survey fauna of Leptophlebiidae in the Santa Catarina State based on nymphs. The material was obtained from the collection deposited at the Laboratório de Pesquisa em Ecologia e Química of the Universidade Comunitária da Região de Chapecó, besides additional specimens collected between 2008 and 2009. Occurrences were plotted in the hydrograph map of Santa Catarina State, with one map for each genus. The Leptophlebiidae nymphs were recorded in 26 aquatic environments that included small streams and rivers. We identified 24...

Species composition and density estimates of the anurofauna of a site within the northernmost large Atlantic Forest remnant (Parque Estadual do Desengano) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Siqueira,Carla da Costa; Vrcibradic,Davor; Almeida-Gomes,Mauricio; Menezes,Vanderlaine Amaral; Borges-Junior,Vitor Nelson Teixeira; Hatano,Fábio Haruki; Pontes,Jorge Antônio Lourenço; Goyannes-Araújo,Pablo; Guedes,Diego Medeiros; van Sluys,Monique; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
We present data on species composition, relative abundance and estimated densities for leaf-litter anuran amphibians from an Atlantic Forest area within the Parque Estadual do Desengano, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, based on results of a short-term survey carried out during the winter at altitudes of 1000-1500 m. Three sampling methods were used: plot sampling, visual encounter surveys (VES; performed during the day, at the twilight, and at night), and pitfall traps. We recorded 13 species, with the direct-developer Ischnocnema parva (Girard, 1853) being the most abundant. Most frogs (ca. 90% of all individuals) sampled by VES were captured during the crepuscular and nocturnal periods. The estimated density of the local leaf-litter frog...

RAPELD: a modification of the Gentry method for biodiversity surveys in long-term ecological research sites Biota Neotropica
Magnusson,William E.; Lima,Albertina P.; Luizão,Regina; Luizão,Flávio; Costa,Flávia R. C.; Castilho,Carolina Volkmer de; Kinupp,V. F..
Our objectives were to develop a method that would be appropriate for long-term ecological studies, but that would permit rapid surveys to evaluate biotic complementarity and land-use planning in Amazonia. The Amazon basin covers about 7 million km². Therefore, even a sparse coverage, with one sample site per 10.000 km², would require about 700 sampling sites. Financial considerations limit the number of sites and investment at each site, but incomplete coverage makes evaluation of biotic complementarity difficult or impossible (Reddy & Dávalos 2003). Our next challenge is to install similar systems throughout Amazonia. The cost, based on modification of Al Gentry's original design is moderate (less than US$ 50.000 per site if it is not necessary...

Postnatal acquired toxoplasmosis patients in an infectious diseases reference center BJID
Silva,Cassius Schnell Palhano; Neves,Elizabeth de Souza; Benchimol,Eliezer Israel; Moraes,Danielle Ribeiro de.
Infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, toxoplasmosis, is one of the most frequent zoonoses in the world; it normally affects both genders equally. Humans are one of several possible intermediate hosts, and the disease is oligosymptomatic in most cases. Vertical transmission is an important cause of fetal malformation and sequels in newborns. Approximately 10% of postnatal cases present multiple manifestations, ranging from low fever and mild lymphadenopathy to severe encephalitis. In moderate cases, lesions such as retinochoroiditis may emerge during acute infection or even years later. We analyzed 313 cases of toxoplasmosis from 1992 to 2004, including 261 acute cases. Most patients were women (68.1%), and 39% of these were pregnant. Among acute infection...

Socio-demographic profile of different samples of Latin American rural extensionists Ciência Rural
Landini,Fernando; Bianqui,Vanina.
In order to design and implement public policies in the context of rural development, information tends to be gathered about family farming in different Latin American countries. In contrast, scarce attention has been given to the description of rural extensionists, who are the ones supporting family farming in the field. A cross-sectional investigation was conducted between 2010 and 2012 including surveys to rural extensions working in 10 different Latin American countries, this allowing for a preliminary description of the socio-demographic profile of the respondents. The samples were incidental ranging from 19 (Bolivia) to 220 (Argentina) subjects, this implying that they were not representative. Significant statistical differences were found with...
