Using nonparametric analysis (DEA) for measuring technical efficiency in poultry farms Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Heidari,MD; Omid,M; Akram,A.
The objective of this study was to determine the economic efficiency of resource utilization in broiler production farms using a non-parametric production function, data envelopment analysis (DEA). Data for the analysis were collected from a cross section of 44 farmers using a multi-stage sampling procedure. In DEA models the farmers that produce their level of output with the least amount of input serve as benchmarks against which the input use inefficiency of all other farmers can be measured. The total variable costs, net return and benefit cost ratio were calculated to be 3506.29 $ (1000 bird)-1, 1386.53 $ (1000 bird) -1 and 1.38, respectively. The average values of technical and scale efficiencies of farmers were found to be 0.92 and 0.93. The results...

Economic efficiency of agricultural production in Brazil Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Vicente,José R..
This study measures levels of technical, allocative and economic efficiency in agricultural crop production for Brazil in 1995. A nonparametric frontier model (DEA) under constant returns to scale was used. On average, the results suggest that the sector suffers from moderate technical inefficiency and from strong allocative inefficiency. If full technical efficiency were achieved, the crop production would increase by more than 30% over that obtained in 1995. Land and labor were overutilized, while fertilizers and pesticides were underutilized. Climate, soil conditions and irrigation use affected technical efficiency levels, and education in rural areas helped explain the extent of allocative efficiency. The state of São Paulo State was the only...

Measurement of the technical efficiency of small pineapple farmers in Santander, Colombia: a stochastic frontier approach Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Trujillo,Juan C.; Iglesias,Wilman J..
The objective of this study is to estimate the levels of technical efficiency of the small pineapple farmers of Santander, Colombia, using the stochastic frontier approach. In addition, this study attempts to determine whether the acreage and some of the socio-economic characteristics of farmers can influence the efficiency of their pineapple farms. By exploiting the information that was gathered in a survey of 194 pineapple farmers in the region, these farmers' technical efficiency was estimated using a Cobb-Douglas-type stochastic frontier model and a technical inefficiency model. The results suggest that acreage and the variables that are associated with the human capital, e.g., the level of schooling and the years of experience in agricultural...

The objectives of this study were to study the efficiency of input factors for Khao Dawk Mali (KDML) 105 production, and estimate the technical efficiency score of rice production in Roi-Et province. The data used in this study was the cross-section data from famers who grew KDML 105 rice with broadcasting technique in Roi-Et province during 2012/13 crop year. The data was collected using the procedure of purposive sampling by choose highest number of farmers who grew KDWL 105 and found the soil group no 17 and 22 in the same area together with random sampling method. The sample consisted of those who grew KDML 105 rice on soil group no 17 and 22. There were 40 samples for each soil group totalling 80 samples. The result of Cobb-Douglas production function...

Application of a non-parametric method to analyze energy consumption for orange production CIGR Journal
Qasemi Kordkheili, Peyman; Amin Asoodar, Mohammad; Kazemi, Navab.
Due to good climate condition and large cultivation area in Mazandaran province of Iran, orchard commodities products, especially orange production is widely improved in this region.  In this study, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique was used to analyze the efficiency of farmers, discriminate efficient orchards from inefficient ones and to identify wasteful uses of energy for orange producers in Sari region.  Data were collected using face-to-face surveys from 86 orange orchardists and included the human power, machinery, diesel fuel, chemicals, fertilizer, farmyard manure, water for irrigation and electricity input sources used per hectare of orange production.  The data was organized and analyzed by DEA Techniques.  The results revealed that the...

Energy efficiency improvement for broiler production using non-parametric techniques CIGR Journal
Ebrahimi, Sajjad; Mesri Gundoshmian, Tarahom; Abdi, Reza; Raei Jadidi, Mehri.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the sustainability and efficiency of broiler production with regard to energy consumption in Ardabil province, Iran. To reach the goal, linear programming model and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) were employed.  Data were collected from the farmers using a face–to–face questionnaire performed in September–December 2014 period.  The DEA application results showed that the average values of technical, pure technical and scale efficiency scores of producers were 0.949, 0.988 and 0.960, respectively.   Also, energy saving target ratio for broiler production was calculated as 8.33%, indicating that by following the recommendations resulted from this study, about 12316.85 MJ/(1000 bird) of total input energy could be saved...

Participation in Organizations, Technical Efficiency and Territorial Differences: A Study of Small Wheat Farmers in Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Jaime,Mónica M; Salazar,César A.
The lack of efficient individual solutions for small farmers either in the market or through the State has resulted in a search for collective spaces to strengthen their productive capacities, where participation in organizations emerges as a relevant factor to obtain higher efficiency levels. The aims of this study were to analyze the determinants of technical efficiency of wheat small farmers in Bío-Bío Region (Chile) and to evaluate its relation to a variety of variables, including farmer participation in organizations, for several territories with different agro-climatic conditions. Using information from the VII Agricultural and Forestry Survey, a stochastic frontier production function was estimated. The results show that age, education, farm size,...

A Study of Dairy Farm Technical Efficiency Using Meta-Regression: An International Perspective Chilean J. Agric. Res.
This paper develops a meta-regression analysis to explain the variation of mean technical efficiency (PETP) measurements from a total of 65 frontier studies that report technical efficiency (ET) measurements at the dairy farm level in the literature published in English and Spanish. The analysis includes the effect of methodology on ET measurements, as well as the effect of the econometric procedure on the meta-regression estimates. Eight models were estimated, and two of these were selected: a fixed effects specification with dummy variables for the most significant studies without geographical effects (EFS), and a specification where the multiple observations are averaged and geographical effects included (OP). Based on model performance, the EFS option...

Technical efficiency for a sample of Chilean wine grape producers: A stochastic production frontier analysis Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Moreira,Victor H; Troncoso,Javier L; Bravo-Ureta,Boris E.
Chile has become an increasingly important player in international wine markets. Concurrent with the expansion of Chilean wine output and exports, there has been an increase in production in several other "New World" countries including Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The overall growth in wine supplies has increased competition to capture market share, which highlights the importance of productivity gains among wine and grape producers. The purpose of this paper is to estimate and analyze the technical efficiency (TE) component of productivity for a sample of wine grape producers in Chile. The data includes 38 farms with specific input-output information for individual blocks yielding a total of 263 observations. We use a Cobb-Douglas...

Estimating the efficiency level of different tea farming systems in Rize Province Turkey Ciência Rural
Haq,Shamsheer ul; Boz,Ismet.
ABSTRACT: The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the efficiency level of tea farms operated by owners and shareholders, and to explore the effect of different decisional, structural and management factors on efficiency. The data were collected from a stratified sample of 138 tea farmers operated in Rize province Turkey in 2017. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) program was used to estimate the efficiency scores. Tobit model was used to explore determinants of technical efficiency. Results disclosed that farmers can reduce their inputs use by 43% without compromising their yield level. However, they have low economic efficiency (0.41). Shareholder-operated farms were highly efficient (0.76) than the owner-operated farms. The factors such as old...
