Willingness to pay for organic food in Argentina: Evidence from a consumer survey AgEcon
Rodriguez, Elsa M.; Lacaze, Maria Victoria; Lupin, Beatriz.
Most food markets do not count on complete information about food quality for consumers. Quality has become a key concept in the new approaches of the Demand Theory (Lancaster, 1966; Antle, 1999), and, therefore, food quality information has turned into a crucial factor when explaining the existing differences between demand profiles. Throughout these last years, organic agriculture has undergone a notorious expansion due, among other things, to the greater interest shown by consumers aware of food safety concerns involving real or potential quality risks perceptions. (Henson, 1996) This paper aims to estimate consumers´ willingness to pay (WTP) for organic food products available in the Argentinean domestic market, with a view to providing useful...

Consumer Willingness to Pay for Genetically Modified Food Labels in a Market with Diverse Information: Evidence from Experimental Auctions AgEcon
Huffman, Wallace E.; Shogren, Jason F.; Rousu, Matthew C.; Tegene, Abebayehu.
With the continuing controversy over genetically modified (GM) foods, some groups advocate mandatory labeling of these products, while other groups oppose labeling. An important issue is how GM labels affect consumers' willingness to pay for these food products in the market. Using a statistically based economics experiment with adult consumers as subjects, we examine how willingness to pay changes for three food products--vegetable oil, tortilla chips, and potatoes--when GM labels are introduced. Participants in the experiments discounted GM-labeled foods by approximately 14% relative to their standard-labeled counterparts. The evidence also showed that sequencing of food labels affects willingness to pay, and that randomizing treatments is an important...

Willingness to Pay for Genetically Modified Oil, Cornflakes, and Salmon: Evidence from a U.S. Telephone Survey AgEcon
Kaneko, Naoya; Chern, Wen S..
This paper reports results from a U.S. national telephone survey on genetically modified foods (vegetable oil, cornflakes, and salmon). The survey featured a contingent valuation in which respondents chose between the GM and non-GM alternatives with an option of indifference. The binomial and multinomial logit models yielded estimated willingness to pay (WTP) to avoid the GM alternatives. Respondents were willing to pay 20.9%, 14.8%, 28.4%, and 29.7% of the base prices to avoid GM vegetable oil, GM cornflakes, GM-fed salmon, and GM salmon, respectively. The inclusion of indifference option could increase the sample size and moderate the mean WTP.

Willingness to pay for different degrees of Abundance of Elephants AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper presents an application of the contingent valuation method (CVM) to determine how the willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation of Asian elephants varies with hypothetical variations in their population. Results from a CVM survey of a sample of urban residents in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka are used for this purpose. We find, consistent with the basic principles of consumer demand theory, the marginal change in the respondents’ WTP amounts is positive but appears to diminish in parallel to the increases in the current wild elephant population (CWEP). In contrast to theoretical expectations, however, we find that the WTP for preserving this species increases at an increasing rate in relation to decreases in the CWEP. This is probably...

Willingness to Pay for a Potential Insurance Policy: Case Study of Trout Aquaculture AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem; Coble, Keith H.; Hudson, Darren; Miller, James C.; Hanson, Terrill R.; Sempier, Stephen H..
Using trout producer survey data and the contingent valuation method, we estimate willing-ness to pay for a potential insurance policy. The survey was conducted in 2005 across the United States; 268 producers completed the survey instrument, resulting in a response rate of 81 percent. Design of the contingent valuation method takes into account two coverage levels and four premium rates. Using standard willingness-to-pay techniques, we assess the premium rate that producers with varying practices and regions are willing to pay for two different cov-erage levels of insurance. In general, trout producers appear willing to pay premium rates of 2 to 11 percent for these coverage levels.

Changing Abundance of Elephants and Willingness to Pay for their Conservation AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper explores the way in which the stated willingness to pay for the conservation of Asian elephants in Sri Lanka varies with hypothetical variations in their abundance. To do that, it relies on results from a sample of residents of Colombo. The willingness to pay function is found to be unusual. It increases at an increasing rate for hypothetical reductions in the elephant population compared to its current level (a level that makes the Asian elephant endangered) and also increases at a decreasing rate for increases in this population from its current level. Rational explanations are given for this relationship. The relationship is, however, at odds with relationships suggested in some of the literature for total economic value as a function of...

US and German Consumer Preferences for Ground Beef Packaged Under a Modified Atmosphere AgEcon
Grebitus, Carola; Jensen, Helen H.; Roosen, Jutta.
Consumers' preferences for meat quality attributes such as color influence their purchasing decisions. Better understanding of consumer preferences can help meat processors and others attain effective product development and marketing and inform public policy decisions on nutrition and food safety education. Modified atmosphere packaging extends the shelf-life of fresh meat and, with the inclusion of carbon monoxide, achieves dramatic color stabilization. The value that US and German consumers' place on ground beef packaging techniques was quantifies by means of non-hypothetical choice experiments. The studies' results can benefit food producers and retailers who make decisions about investing in new packaging methods by providing quantitative measures of...

A Comparison of Actual and Hypothetical Willingness to Pay of Parents and Non-Parents for Protecting Infants' Health: The Case of Nitrates in Drinking Water AgEcon
Loomis, John B.; Asmus, Cheryl; Bell, Paul.
The objective of this research was to estimate adults' willingness to pay to reduce health risks to their or other families's infants, the latter to test for altruism. A choice experiment was conducted by having adults pay for bottled water for infants to reduce infants' exposure to nitrates in drinking water. Since nitrates only affect infants' health, we have isolated the adults' willingness to pay just for infants' health by buying bottled water to avoid infants' nitrate intake. Respondents were separated into two treatments, one with hypothetical choices, and the other where respondents were told that one of their four choices would be binding, and they would actually buy bottled water using money given to them at the beginning of the experiment....

Using a Modified Payment Card Survey on Chinese Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Fair Trade Coffee: Would the Starting Point Matter AgEcon
Yang, Shang-Ho; Hu, Wuyang.
Coffee consumption in China is increasing rapidly over the recent years. This study offers one of the few initial attempts to not only understand general consumption behavior associated with Chinese coffee, but to explore the viability of niche markets for coffee with the credence attribute “fair trade”. A modified payment card approach was adopted as the consumer willingness to pay elicitation method. Survey results of 564 consumers from the city of Wuhan, China suggest a positive attitude toward coffee as an alternative drink and a willingness to pay a premium for “fair trade” coffee. This study also explores and describes the potential impact of starting point bias, which has been relatively well documented in the dichotomous choice literature but has...

Disentangling Access and View Amenities in Access-Restricted Coastal Residential Communities AgEcon
Morgan, O. Ashton; Hamilton, Stuart E..
In coastal communities with uniform flood risk, amenity value is comprised of two components – view and access. Having controlled for view, it is assumed that any residual amenity value represents the benefit derived from accessing the beach for leisure/recreational purposes. However, as properties closer to the beach typically have improved viewsheds, the two amenities are highly correlated, and disentangling view and access is problematical. A spatial autoregressive hedonic model captures ease of beach access via a network distance parameter that varies independently from property viewshed, collinearity effects are mitigated, and access and view can be disentangled.

Quantifizierung „gesellschaftlich gewünschter, nicht marktgängiger Leistungen“ der Landwirtschaft AgEcon
Plankl, Reiner; Weingarten, Peter; Nieberg, Hiltrud; Zimmer, Yelto; Isermeyer, Folkhard; Krug, Janina; Haxsen, Gerhard.

Determinants of Consumer Preferences for Regional Food AgEcon
Henseleit, Meike; Kubitzki, Sabine; Teuber, Ramona.
In recent years an increasing consumer preference for regional food can be observed, both in Germany and in other European countries. Regression models investigating this region-of-origin effect are rare and in most cases the region or sample size under consideration is quite small. Different from that, the present study is based on a representative data set for Germany. Our objective is to identify and quantify the determining factors of consumers’ preferences for regional food. Therefore, a theoretical construct is proposed and tested empirically by using a binary logit model. The results indicate that cognitive and normative factors are the main determinants on consumer preference for regional food, whereas affective and socio-demographic variables only...

The Effect of Information on Consumer Preferences of Indoor Plants AgEcon
Solano, Alexis; House, Lisa; Gao, Zhifeng.
This study primarily focuses on the effect of information on consumers’ purchasing behavior. If consumers are provided with information about a specific product they may change their beliefs about that product. This distribution of information may lead the consumer to make the decision either to purchase or not purchase, or the consumer may increase or decrease the amount he or she is willing to pay. Here, the impact of information about indoor plants’ ability to reduce indoor air pollution on participants is analyzed. This research will add to the literature on consumer behavior and will also benefit the floriculture industry within the state of Florida. Florida’s floriculture sales have fluctuated during the last ten years. From 2000 to 2003 the...

THE DYNAMIC FORMATION OF WILLINGNESS TO PAY: AN EMPIRICAL SPECIFICATION AND TEST AgEcon
Corrigan, Jay R.; Kling, Catherine L.; Zhao, Jinhua.
In a static setting, willingness to pay for an environmental improvement is equal to compensating variation. However, in a dynamic setting characterized by uncertainty, irreversibility, and the potential for learning, willingness to pay may also contain an option value. In this paper, we incorporate the dynamic nature of the value formulation process into a study using a contingent valuation method, designed to measure the value local residents assign to a north-central Iowa lake. Our results show that willingness to pay is highly sensitive to the potential for future learning. Respondents offered the opportunity to delay their purchasing decisions until more information became available were willing to pay significantly less for improved water quality...

Visitors' reaction to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka: A Survey AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Bandara, Ranjith.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO) is a unique captive elephant-based recreation facility in Sri Lanka. Over 35,000 visitors (both local and foreign) visit the PEO per month on average for a variety of reasons. However, little or no attempt has been made to examine their reaction to its activities. This paper reports preliminary findings from two visitor surveys (one local and one foreign) conducted at the PEO to examine the characteristics of visitors, the satisfaction they gained from the visit, their attitudes towards conservation of the elephant, their reactions to the current facilities available at the orphanage, and their opinions and maximum willingness to pay (WTP) to enter the PEO. It is found that, although some variations occurred between the...

Verbiage Matters: Do Respondents Answer Willingness to Pay Dichotomous Choice Questions on a Per Person or Per Group Basis? AgEcon
Lohman, Greta; Keske, Catherine M.; Loomis, John B..
Dichotomous choice willingness to pay questions are often used to determine the value visitors place on nature-based recreation. Ambiguity in wording can result in the use of information that does not necessarily reflect visitors’ true WTP. For example, depending on the specificity of the verbiage used, respondents may answer questions on a group basis, rather than an individual basis. To address this issue, experimental surveys were distributed with questions that specifically asked WTP on a per person basis, as compared to control surveys in which the WTP question was more generally worded. Analyses show WTP responses for either survey type are statistically different, with non-overlapping confidence intervals. Furthermore, approaches were conducted...

Mapping preferences for the restoration of environmental damage caused by illegal dumping AgEcon
Campbell, Danny; Sinclair, Victoria.
In this paper we use a discrete choice experiment to elicit the economic benefits associated with restoring environmental damage caused by illegal dumping activities. Our study focuses on an extensive rural upland area close to Belfast, where illegal dumping activities are prevalent. Using a random parameters logit model to account for unobserved taste heterogeneity, we exploit the panel nature of the dataset to retrieve partworths, or willingness to pay (WTP) values, for every individual in the sample. We subsequently investigate the existence of spatial dependence of these estimates. As a means of benefit transfer, we also employ geostatistical methods to extend across the whole of the study area the WTP estimates derived from the collected data. The...
