Erfahrungen bei der Haltung horntragender Milchkühe im Laufstall – Probleme und Lösungsansätze in der Praxis Organic Eprints
Schneider, Claudia; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Knierim, Ute.
Loose housing systems are commonly designed for cows without horns. Farmers keeping horned herds are facing increased risks of injuries among the cows. Interviews were carried out on farms with 62 horned dairy herds in order to collect practical evidence on problems and suitable measures related to the keeping of loose housed horned cows. Most farmers see the feeding area, the cubicles and the waiting area before milking as problem areas. A possibility to securely lock all cows in the feeding rack and an easy retreat from the rack is regarded important. The cubicles should offer an exit to the front, which can be used by cows when attacked from behind. Generous space allowances in the waiting area as well as in the whole stable were recommended....

Control of fruit flies pest on guava fruit by using organic insecticide Organic Eprints
Kardinan, Agus.
Guava fruit (Psidium guajava) is a mainstay commodity in Bogor and Bogor district is a supplier of guava into surrounding towns. In Bogor, population of guava fruit is around 160,000 trees that reaches an area of about 800 ha and scattered in several places, including in the Village of Kencana, Sukadamai, Mekarwangi and Sukaresmi that reaches an area of about 80 ha with a population of about sixteen thousand trees. Production during the harvest reaches 15 tones per ha at each harvest, and the harvest can be done every three days. Nevertheless, one of the obstacles limiting factor in the production is a matter of losing the results, both quantitatively by falling fruit, as well as qualitatively by rotten fruit caused by infestation of fruit flies...

Optimising nutrition in organic tomato production Organic Eprints
Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The abstract describes experiments with different cropping systems for organic greenhouse production of tomatoes. In this experiment two main questions are adressed. As greenhouse tomato production is a very intensive monoculture production, problems with nutrient supply and balances are expected, and problems with soilborne pests and diseases are widespread. To counter such problems, we compare the normal method of soil grown tomatoes with systems where tomatoes are grown in compost filled boxes. This allows to control nutrient losses and prevent carry over of diseses and pests in the soil. We also study an intermediate system, where where tomatoes are established in compost filled boxes, but the roots are allowed to develop also in the soil outside the...

Rentabilität und Lebensqualität auf Bio-Milchviehbetrieben: ein Paradoxon? Organic Eprints
Strauss, Agnes; Kirner, Leopold; Neumayr, Christoph; Quendler, Elisabeth.
This study examines a possible relationship between the economic key data of dairy farms and the family members’ subjective assessment of their perceived quality of life. Seven organic dairy farms were evaluated as part of the on-going project, “Integrative assessment of ecological, economic and social-ethic characteristics of sustainability of agricultural production systems in dairy farming”. Total costs, entrepreneurial profit and return on labour were chosen as key data for rentability. Job satisfaction, wealth in time and health were selected to describe the quality of life. The results confirm that bigger farms with more dairy cows operate more cost efficiently, but the farm with the most dairy cows was not the most successful economically. It was...

Competitive forbs in high-producing temporary grasslands with perennial ryegrass and red clover can increase plant diversity and herbage yield Organic Eprints
Dhamala, N.R.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
European agriculture focuses on increasing biodiversity. However, in highly productive temporary grasslands in grass / arable systems, the biodiversity is usually low. Three non-leguminous species have shown high competitive strength in temporary grasslands and ample possibility to increase biodiversity without compromising yields. In this experiment, we examined in detail the competitiveness and productivity of the three forb species: chicory (Cichorium intybus), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and caraway (Carum carvi) grown in different proportions in mixtures including traditional grassland species: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and red clover (Trifolium pratense), with fertiliser application as an additional factor. Dry matter (DM) yield...

Kuchtová, Perla; Nerad, Daniel; Škeřík, Josef; Kas, Martin; Mičák, Libor; Kazda, Jan; Baranyk, Petr.
Odrůdy ozimé řepky reagují na podmínky lokality i úroveň intenzifikačních vstupů rozdílně. Zákonná omezení, která musí ekologický pěstitel respektovat, kladou vyšší nároky na volbu postupů i výběr odrůd, především z hlediska jejich schopnosti odolávat různým druhům stresu a schopnost poskytnout uspokojivý výnos i v extenzivních pěstitelských podmínkách. V technologické části pokusu byly zkoušeny přípravky ochrany rostlin povolené v ekologickém zemědělství u nás či v zahraničí. S cílem zlepšit výživové poměry pěstovaných rostlin byly testovány Guáno, Biokal a Lignohumát.

TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL FEASIBILITY OF SEABASS FRY PRODUCTION ACCORDING TO ORGANIC TECHNIQUES Organic Eprints
Zacchino, Valentina; De Boni, Annalisa; Gorgoni, Paola; Novelli , Andrea; Centoducati, Gerardo; Roma, Rocco.
Over the past few years, consumers have been increasing their awareness about environmental, health and safety concerns and they have been gradually changing their habits in favor of organic food. In aquaculture sector, the most recent legislative framework regarding the organic production in Europe is the Commission Regulation (EC) 710/2009, where chapter for aquaculture animals include requirement for animal welfare conditions in husbandry and maximum stocking densities. In Italy, only ten farms are involved in the supply of certified organic fish and only some pilot projects were carried out for organic farming of different species. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to define or verify the principal standards for organic seabass farming,...

Strategic use of virulence pattern to develop genetic markers for resistance to common bunt (Tilletia caries) in wheat Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Backes, Gunter; Müller, Karl-Josef; Spieß, Hartmut.
When assesssing races of common bunt for virulens pattern within a region, it is important to take into account that collected spores may represent a diverse population of different virulence races. When screening spores on a differential set of wheat lines with known resistance genes, a low infection rate on a resistant wheat variety does not necessarily demonstrate that virulence is absent in the spore collection, but could be a sign that virulence is present, but only present in a low frequency among the spores. If just a few spores within a spore sample are indeed virulent, they may infect some plants and from there multiply the virulence quite rapidly next years. Previous studies have shown that virulence against most resistance genes were present in...

Experimental systems to monitor the impact of transgenic corn on keystone soil microorganisms Organic Eprints
Turrini, Dr. Alessandra; Sbrana, Dr. Cristiana; Giovannetti, Prof. Manuela.
Risks and benefits of transgenic crop plants should be evaluated not only by assessing pollen flow, but also by considering soil persistence of transgenic products, such as Bt toxins, which can accumulate in the soil and remain active for a long time. Moreover, transgenic plants are often ploughed under as crop residues, representing a potential hazard for non-target arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, a group of beneficial plant symbionts fundamental for soil fertility. In this study we monitored the effects of transgenic corn plants (Bt 11 and Bt 176) and their residues on AM fungal growth and root colonization ability. Both transgenic plants decreased mycorrhizal colonization and Bt 11 plant residues negatively affected mycorrhizal establishment by...

Good animal health and welfare is an explicit goal of organic livestock farming, and will need continuous development and adjustment on the farms. Furthermore, the very different conditions in different regions of Europe calls for models that can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. A European project with participants from seven countries have been established with the aim of developing principles for animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming, based on a process where knowledge about the status within a given herd will be included as background for taking decisions and planning future improvements. An important part of the planning process is communication with other farmers as well as...
