Influence of gentle touching applied few weeks before slaughter on avoidance distance and slaughter stress in finishing cattle Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
The present study investigated the effect of gentle touching applied during the last 5 weeks before slaughter in finishing cattle on behaviour towards humans, stress indicators and beef quality. Three Experiments were carried out. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 employed eight Limousin crossbred bulls, eight Piemontese crossbreds (six females, two steers) and ten Limousin crossbreds (three females, seven steers), respectively. Half of the animals were equally assigned to a treatment and a control group. The treatment group consisted of a standardized gentle head-neck-region touching and started 5 weeks before slaughter and was continued once a week in experiments 1 and 2 and twice a week in experiment 3 during the following 5 weeks. Avoidance distance tests (ADT)...

The role of subjective norms in theory of planned behavior in the context of organic food consumption Organic Eprints
Al-Swidi, Abdullah; Huque, Sheikh Mohammed Rafiul; Hafeez, Muhammad Haroon; Shariff, Mohd Noor Mohd.
The purpose of the paper is to investigate the applicability of theory of planned behavior (TPB) with special emphasis on measuring the direct and moderating effect of subjective norms on attitude, perceived behavioral control and buying intention in context of buying organic food. Structured questionnaires were randomly distributed among academic staffs and students of two universities in southern Punjab, Pakistan. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed model fit. Results of the study showed that subjective norms significantly moderate the relationship between attitude and buying intention as well as between perceived behavior control and buying intention. Furthermore, subjective norms significantly influence attitude toward...

Influence of Soil Management and Crop Rotation on Physical Properties in a Long-Term Experiment in Paraná, Brazil Organic Eprints
CALEGARI, A.; TOURDONNET, S.; TESSIER, D.; RHEINHEIMER, D. S.; RALISCH, R.; HARGROVE, W. L.; GUIMARÃES,, M. F.; TAVARES FILHO, J..
This work aims to evaluate the soil physical properties affected by cover crop rotation and soil management in a long-term experiment in southern Brazil. The experiment was established in 1986, with treatments combining six winter treatments and two tillage systems (conventional and no tillage). Bulk density, porosity, aggregate-size class distribution, and organic carbon content of the aggregates were determined at six depths. Bulk density was not affected by tillage systems and winter treatments. The soil disturbance by plowing enhanced the macroporosity, decreased the microporosity, and promoted the formation of smaller aggregate size, in comparison to no tillage. Apart from the soil management, all winter species increased the greater aggregate–size...

China's Organic Revolution Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
China is at the onset of an organic agriculture revolution. From 2000 to 2006, China has moved from 45th to 2nd position in the world in number of hectares under organic management. China now has more land under organic horticulture than any other country. In the year 2005/2006, China added 12% to the world’s organic area. This accounted for 63% of the world’s annual increase in organic land, and China now has 11% of the world’s organically managed land. The antecedents to China’s Organic Revolution are examined, and reveal further growth potential in the Chinese organic sector. Longitudinal analysis of China’s food production statistics reveals explosive growth, and the consequent capacity for export has implications for food exporting nations. China has...

European perspectives of organic plant breeding and seed production in a genomics era. Organic Eprints
Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Wilbois, K-P.; Østergård, H..
For further optimisation of organic agricultural systems, more focus is required on organically produced seeds and the development of better adapted varieties. Organic plant breeding and seed production need to comply with the concept of naturalness as applied in organic agriculture, which not only includes the nonchemical and agro-ecological approaches, but also the integrity of life approach. As organic environments are less controllable and are more variable, breeding should aim at improved yield stability and product quality by being adapted to organic soil fertility as well as sustainable weed, pest and disease management. Also the ability to produce economicacceptable seed yield avoiding seed-borne diseases should be included. On the short...

Root growth vigour is a better predictor than root hair traits of early nutrient uptake in spring wheat plants grown at low soil fertility Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Jensen, Lars Stoumann; Magid, Jakob.
Background and Aims A number of root and root hair traits have been proposed as important for acquisition of P. However, it remains unknown whether these traits are most important in determining macro- and micronutrient uptake at low soil fertility. This study investigated the variations in root and root hair traits among spring wheat genotypes and examined which root and root hair traits are most important for high uptake of macro- and micronutrients. Methods Six spring wheat genotypes were grown in a soil with low nutrient availability. The root and root hair traits as well as the content of macro- and micronutrients were identified. Results A significant genetic variability in root and root hair traits was found. High root growth vigour and long and...

Ranking matrices as operational tools for the environmental risk assessment of genetically modified crops on non-target organisms Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Weiss, Gabriele; Oehen, Bernadette; Römbke, Jörg; Jänsch, Stephan; Teichmann, Hanka; Lang, Andreas; Otto, Mathias; Tappeser, Beatrix.
For the operationalization of the structured, stepwise selection procedure for non-target testing organisms integrated into the new EFSA guidelines for environmental risk assessment of GM plants practicaltools – i.e. ranking matrices – were developed. These tools – some of them are new and some are refinedfrom older ones – were tested using the GM case crop of TC 1507 maize. The selection procedure consists of six steps. The strategy builds on identifying the important ecological functions for the particularcropping system and compiling a species lists according to their ecological functions and presence inthe specific receiving environments. Subsequently, the species numbers are reduced in a systematic, stepwise fashion to a relevant and practical number...

Fundamental understanding of cellulose dissolution can improve the efficiency of biomass processing Organic Eprints
Ghasemi, Mohammad; Tsianou, Marina; Alexandridis, Paschalis.
A major barrier to the efficient utilization of biomass is the recalcitrance to dissolution of crystalline cellulose. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of cellulose dissolution, with particular attention on how these findings can improve the efficiency of biomass processing. An improved fundamental understanding of cellulose dissolution can guide the rational selection of solvents and the optimization of processing conditions, thus leading to an enhanced utilization of biomass.

Nitrogen losses from grass ley after slurry application - surface broadcasting vs. injection Organic Eprints
Uusi-Kämppä, Jaana; Mattila, Pasi K..
As the livestock numbers on Finnish dairy farms have increased and most fields on dairy farms are under grass, it has become common to spread cattle slurry over grasslands. To estimate environmental effects of recurrent slurry applications, a 5-year field study was performed to compare nitrogen (N) losses to water and ammonia losses to air by volatilization, when cattle slurry was either surface broadcast or injected into clay soil after grass cuttings. Slurry was spread on the grass in summer (1996–1997) or both in summer and autumn (1998–2000). Biomass N uptake before grass harvesting and amount of soil mineral N in spring and autumn were measured and field N balances were calculated. Despite cool weather, up to one third of the ammonium N of broadcast...

Above- and belowground nitrogen distribution of a red clover-perennial ryegrass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient established by organic and conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Hammelehle, Andreas; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen.
Aims Belowground legume nitrogen (N) composed of roots and rhizodeposition is an important N input to soils, but published data of belowground N vary broadly, probably due to extrapolation from short-term experiments and dissimilar growing conditions. We quantified belowground N inputs of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) during two consecutive years in a clover-grass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient. Methods We established a red clover-perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) model sward in microplots located in field plots of the DOK experiment, which has a 33-year history of organic and conventional cropping, resulting in a soil nutrient availability gradient. Four treatments were examined: the zero fertilisation control, bio-organic...

Analyse zur Netto-Lebensmittelproduktion und zum Ackerflächenbedarf von Rindermastsystemen Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Ertl, Paul; Guggenberger, T.; Häusler, J.; Starz, Walter.

Organic Eprints
Campos, Jurema Iara; Valente, Ana Lúcia Eduardo Farah.
