Rapid transport and high accumulation of amorphous silica in the Congo deep-sea fan: A preliminary budget ArchiMer
Raimonet, Melanie; Ragueneau, Olivier; Jacques, Vincent; Corvaisier, Rudolph; Moriceau, Brivaela; Khripounoff, Alexis; Pozzato, Lara; Rabouille, Christophe.
Mechanisms controlling the transfer and retention of silicon (Si) along continental margins are poorly understood, but play a major role in the functioning of coastal ecosystems and the oceanic biological pump of carbon. Deep-sea fans are well recognized as carbon sink spots, but we lack knowledge about the importance of the fans in the global Si cycle. Here, we provide a first estimate of the role played by the Congo deep-sea fan, one of the biggest in the world, in the Si cycle. Sediment cores sampled in the deep-sea fan were analyzed to build a Si mass balance. An exceptionally high accumulation rate of amorphous silica aSiO(2) (2.29 +/- 0.58 mol Si m(-2) y(-1)) was found, due to a high sedimentation rate and the presence of aluminum in the sediments....

Inter-hemispheric asymmetry in the early Pleistocene Pacific warm pool ArchiMer
Russon, T.; Elliot, M.; Sadekov, A.; Cabioch, G.; Correge, T.; De Deckker, P..
The position of the southern boundary of the Pacific warm pool is shown to have been stable since the early Pleistocene, based upon a planktic foraminiferal Mg/Ca-derived reconstruction of subtropical sea surface temperature in the Coral Sea. This contrasts with previous reconstructions showing warm pool contraction from the north and east and means that the early Pleistocene warm pool was more hemispherically asymmetric than its present configuration. The latter was not established until similar to 1Ma, supporting a strengthening of the northern Hadley Cell, which was not replicated in its southern counterpart, prior to the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.

Design Polysaccharides of Marine Origin: Chemical Modifications to Reach Advanced Versatile Compounds ArchiMer
Chopin, Nathalie; Guillory, Xavier; Weiss, Pierre; Le Bideau, Jean; Colliec-jouault, Sylvia.
Polysaccharides are among the most abundant macromolecules on Earth. These polymers are easily obtained from various marine resources such as algae, microorganisms and crustacean shells. The structure of these natural carbohydrates is innovative and quite complex. Marine biopolymers represent key scaffolds toward large challenging fields, such as biomedical applications (glycosaminoglycans, regenerative medicine and drug delivery) and tailored biomaterials. Chemical modifications can be applied to modify their final properties in a specific purpose. New functional glycans are achievable and represent a real potential with their intrinsic biocompatibility and biodegradability. Hydroxyl groups are ubiquitous in polysaccharides structure and involved in most...

Baud, Jean-pierre; Palvadeau, Hubert; Nourry, Max.

To implement future malaria elimination strategies in French Guiana, a characterization of the infectious reservoir is recommended. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October and December 2017 in the French Guianese municipality of St Georges de l'Oyapock, located along the Brazilian border. The prevalence of Plasmodium spp. was determined using a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Demographic, house locations, medical history, and biological data were analyzed. Factors associated with Plasmodium spp. carriage were analyzed using logistic regression, and the carriage localization was investigated through spatial cluster analysis. Of the 1,501 samples analyzed with PCR, positive results totaled 90 and 10 for...

Assessment of wind-forcing impact on a global wind-wave model using the TOPEX altimeter ArchiMer
Feng, H; Vandemark, D; Quilfen, Yves; Chapron, Bertrand; Beckley, B.
The study presents assessment of an operational wave model (Wavewatch III), focusing upon the model sensitivity to wind-forcing products. Four wind fields are used to drive the model, including the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and three other products that assimilate various satellite wind measurements having high spatial resolution, including the QuikSCAT scatterometer. Three wave field statistics: significant wave height, mean zero-crossing wave period, and mean square slope are compared with collocated TOPEX altimeter derivatives to gauge the relative skill of differing wind-forced model runs, as well as to demonstrate an extended use of the altimeter beyond simply supplying wave height for wave model validation and assimilation. Results suggest that model...

Morlaix, Martine; Lassus, Patrick.
Very few attempts have been made in order to investigate the role of nutrients on cellular growth and toxin production in dinoflagellates associated with DSP (Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison). Some preliminary results are presented here, aiming at a better knowledge of inorganic nitrogen and organic phosphorus effects upon division rate and toxin content of Prorocentrum lima (PL2V spanish strain). Nitrogen have a positive effect on growth rate, up to a threshold value of 880muM.l-1. Above this threshold the rate decreases. There is no effect on toxin content since okadaic acid and DTX1 cell contents remain low (4.8 +/- 0.5 pg.cell.-1) and steady. Phosphorus effect upon division rate follows a non-linear relationship, whereas cellular toxic content is inversely...

A Case Study of Technological Switching and Technological Lock-In in the French Fisheries Sector: Why is Sustainable Change so Difficult? ArchiMer
Le Floc'H, Pascal; Daures, Fabienne; Guyader, Olivier; Wilson, James.
Many sectors such as the fishery show classic examples of technological lock-in and path dependence, even though some economists might predict smooth switching toward technologies that are more cost effective and sustainable. We use ideas from the evolutionary economics and public choice literatures to explain why trajectories of technological change, especially in fisheries, may not be smooth at all, but rather punctuated. The interest of technological change and switching behavior for fisheries economists and managers stems from the fact that control of effective effort, often necessary for sustainable management of the resource, remains a central management problem for that sector worldwide, even in developed countries. However, various policies put in...

Intra-individual behavioral variability displayed by tuna at fish aggregating devices (FADs) ArchiMer
Robert, Marianne; Dagorn, Laurent; Filmalter, John David; Deneubourg, Jean-louis; Itano, David; Holland, Kim.
Fishers have exploited the associative behavior displayed by several pelagic fish species with floating objects for decades, through the use of man-made fish aggregating devices (FADs), which facilitate the capture of such species. However, our understanding of this associative behavior and its adaptive value is poor and the scientific community is ill-equipped to provide fishery managers with science-based recommendations on the impacts of FADs on ecosystems. In an array of 13 anchored FADs around Oahu, Hawaii, USA, 72 yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares were equipped with internal acoustic tags, which facilitated the continuous monitored of their presence and absence around each FAD using automated acoustic receivers. Data were analyzed using survival...

Food deprivation reduces social interest in the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Aimon, Cassandre; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Floch, Stephane; Claireaux, Guy.
Periods of food deprivation up to several months are common features for fishes and in such conditions, fitness will be determined by their capacity to maximize food encounter while minimizing predation risk. In this context, the propensity to take risk and the willingness to associate with conspecifics are particularly important as they contribute to alleviating the trade-off between predation avoidance and foraging efficiency. This study examined to what extent food deprivation modulates fish risk-taking and social behaviours, as well as the relationship between them. To address these issues juvenile European sea bass were either fed daily with a maintenance ration or food-deprived during 3 weeks. Risk-taking and sociability were assessed through...

ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Martin, A; Maggi, Pierre; Berthome, Jean-paul; Langlade, Aime; Bachere, Evelyne.
Discolored waters and human diseases by shellfishes were dominant features of summer 1983 in south coast of Brittany. Vilaine Bay, the most damaged area, was successively affected by brown waters in early June, and diarrhetic intoxications by harvested mussels (July and August), just as DPS producing dinoflagellate (D. acuminata ) reached higher water or mussel guts concentrations than years before. Outspreading in the whole south coast of Brittany and possible relation with hydrological or biological parameters are analyzed.

Hydrothermal vents are distributed along mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins. These ecosystems harbour a specialized fauna supported by a local chemosynthetic microbial production, made possible through the oxidation of reduced elements present in the hydrothermal fluid. While the relationships between faunal assemblages and habitats have been relatively well described around the globe, our knowledge on the temporal dynamics of these environments is still limited, particularly at time scale relevant to organisms (from few minutes to several years). Based on hydrothermal vent communities occurring on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, located in the northeast Pacific Ocean, this thesis aims at understanding the functioning and temporal dynamics of macrofaunal...

Rawat, Arshad.
Wind-generated surface gravity waves are ubiquitous at the ocean surface. Their period varies between 2 and 25 seconds, with wavelength varying between a few meters to several hundreds of meters. Longer and, lower frequency surface gravity waves, called infragravity (IG) waves, are associated to these short, high frequency wind-generated waves. These infragravity waves have dominant periods comprised between 30 seconds and 10 minutes, and, when they propagate freely, with horizontal wavelengths of up to tens of kilometres, as given by the linear surface gravity wave dispersion relation. Outside of surf zones, the vertical amplitude of these infragravity waves is of the order of 1-10 cm, while the amplitude of wind-generated waves is of the order of 1-10...

An Annual Cycle of Submesoscale Vertical Flow and Restratification in the Upper Ocean ArchiMer
Yu, Xiaolong; Naveira Garabato, Alberto C.; Martin, Adrian P; Buckingham, Christian; Brannigan, Liam; Su, Zhan.
Numerical simulations suggest that submesoscale turbulence may transform lateral buoyancy gradients into vertical stratification, and thus restratify the upper ocean via vertical flow. However, the observational evidence for this restratifying process has been lacking due to the difficulty in measuring such ephemeral phenomena, particularly over periods of months to years. This study presents an annual cycle of the vertical velocity and associated restratification estimated from two nested clusters of meso- and submesoscale-resolving moorings, deployed in a typical mid-ocean area of the Northeast Atlantic. Vertical velocities inferred using the non-diffusive density equation are substantially stronger at submesoscales (horizontal scales of 1-10 km) than at...

Numerical study of a suction anchor ArchiMer
Grosjean, François; Kerampran, Steven; Rosu, Octavian; Bompais, Xavier.
This work aims at simulating the movement of a suction anchor using a new version of commercial code Fluent. The computations consider a sinusoidal movement of the anchor (roughly corresponding to its heave) both in a fluid at rest and in a uniform flow. They are validated with results of experimental tests performed by Ifremer using a scaled model of suction anchor.

Sea level variations and their dependency on meteorological and hydrological forcing: Analysis of altimeter and surface data for the Black Sea ArchiMer
Stanev, Ev; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Peneva, El.
TOPEX/Poseidon (TIP) altimeter data in the Black Sea are analyzed for almost 5 years in parallel with available hydrological and meteorological data with the aim of studying the water balance and the dependency of sea level oscillations on meteorological and hydrological forcing. This forcing induces seasonal variations of mean sea level with oscillations of similar to 10-15 cm. The consistency between satellite and tidal gauge data is demonstrated in several coastal locations, and a mean ascending trend of similar to 3 cm yr(-1) is found in the two data sets. The variability in all components of water balance, including the Bosphorus outflow calculated as the difference between the fresh water flux and the time rate of sea level change estimated from...

Satellite Air - Sea fluxes ArchiMer
Bentamy, Abderrahim; Katsaros, Kristina; Queffeulou, Pierre.
This chapter addresses the estimation of global surface winds, surface wind stress, latent heat flux, and sensible heat flux over the oceans with high spatial and temporal resolution using satellite radar and radiometer measurements. An overview of the physics of remotely sensed data, of methods and algorithms used to retrieve surface fluxes is provided. The retrievals are used to estimate regular in space and time surface parameters, requested for oceanic forcing function, over global ocean. The characteristics of the former are investigated at global and regional scales.

The coastal area located between Quiberon and Noirmoutier is influenced by dilution plumes of the Loire and Vilaine rivers. Dysfunctions linked with a growing eutrophication of the environment have been observed over the last decades. Important imbalances such as massive deaths of the fauna in open embayments and more and more appearances of red tides give the area a unique character. Other environ mental problems are likely to disrupt human activites in the near future (bays silting up, quality of coastal water worsening, overfishing ...). This is why there is a real need to gather information on the subject. This will make it possible to identify problems and gaps in the area. Beside presenting pieces of information, the study offers various reflection...
