Some mediterranean species of Homoptera, Auchenorrhyncha are described and figured. Hysteropterum duffelsi n. sp. and H. gravesteini n. sp. (Issidae) are described respectively from Cyprus and Mallorca. In the genus Macropsidius (Cicadellidae), M. hispanus Dlabola, 1963 falls as a junior synonym of M. dispar (Fieber, 1868), and M. gravesteinicus n. sp. from Spain is added. Chorita tarragonica n. sp. (Cicadellidae) is also based on material from Spain. |

Before my departure to Java I intended to give a monographic revision of the Neuropteroidea of Insulinde, but want of time and of sufficient materials forced me to give up this intention and I restricted it to the monographic revision of the MECOPTERA and PLANIPENNIA, the two orders I studied with special attention since 3 years in behalf of the „Catalogue des collections du baron E. de Sélys Lougchamps”. The territories that I name Insulinde are the Dutch colonies of the malayan and papuan archipelago. I describe also the species known from those parts of Borneo and New Guinea, that do not belong to the dutch possessions, as they very probably also will occur in them. Those of neighbouring countries are noted so far as they are important for comparison. |

A large amount of unidentified material of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) is lying on herbarium shelves around the world. Here twelve species are described in an attempt to reduce this amount of unidentified material. Next to this, previously unidentified material is now assigned to G. asplundiana, G. microcarpa, G. pastazae, and G. scalarinervia, four previously described but poorly known species, thus providing a clearer circumscription of these species. Furthermore, G. discolor and G. megalophylla appear to have a wider distribution than previously thought. Lastly, G. macrantha, a curious species only known from the type, is excluded from the genus and referred to Uvaria. With the description of twelve new species and the synonymizing of... |

About 10 years ago no recent records of Gagea villosa were known for the Netherlands; formerly it occurred in more than 30 hour-squares. Since 1969 the species has been recorded from 4 localities, in each case growing in rather thin lawns or on little trodden paths. It is possible, that the species may be found in more hour-squares in the Netherlands, as G. villosa can survive vegetatively for long periods. |

The Checklist of the flora of Cebu by D. Bicknell is finished. It is intended to be published as a CD-ROM which will contain plates of 168 pteridophytes and 1578 spermatophytes. For those who need to invent names for new taxa or is interested in their derivation it will be very worthwhile to invest USD 27.95 in the reprint of R.W. Brown’s Composition of scientific words (Rev. ed. 1956; reprint: 2000) ii, 882 pp, Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington DC. ISBN 1-56098-848-7 (PB). W.T. Stearn called it “one of the best of its kind ever written”. See also the review by R. Schmid [Taxon 49 (2000) 840]. |

In the present paper the latest studies on the distribution and biostratigraphy of planktonic gastropods in the Central Paratethys are summarised. The research was carried out on material from Tertiary deposits of Austria, Hungary and Poland, mainly concentrating on the Badenian (Middle Miocene). In Hungary correlations on palaeomagnetic, nannoplankton and pteropod data were done for several boreholes. |

Last year Mr. P. Buitendijk had the good fortune to obtain again an example of Aestrelata aterrima (Bonaparte), caught aboard ship at night in the Indian Ocean (lat. 10°52'N., long 60°8' E.) at December 11th 1911. This is the second example presented by him to our collection (cf. Notes Leyden Mus. XXXIII, 1910—’11, p. 113). It is a female in worn plumage, moulting wing- and tailfeathers, and having no whitish feathers on the lores and on the head like the first specimen. Mr. Buitendijk has noted the colour of the light parts of the feet in the live bird dull white; that of iris and bill black. I received the bird in rather fresh condition, as it had been preserved in the refrigerating-room of the steamer; the colour of the light parts of the feet was then... |

A suitable subtitle for this paper would have been “The rise and fall of a family”. What is usually called the Cyphellaceae is an instructive example of a situation not uncommonly encountered in the current systematics of mycology: a family retained in a traditional sense by some mycologists and considered by them as good a family as any, while others are convinced that it is nothing but a handy bin from which part of the contents has already been taken out and disposed of by scattering it over various groups, but which is still needed for keeping what remains. We do not yet know what to do with this considerable remainder, mainly because the published accounts are inadequate and the species have not yet been scrutinized anew in the light of present-day... |

I. Introduction — The need for a simple method of collecting botanical material from rain-forest trees became evident during the construction of a field key to the rain-forest trees of North Queensland. Many collecting techniques have been developed, e.g. throwing sticks and stones, severing branches with rifles and shotguns, felling trees with axes and saws, breaking branches with hand thrown lines and using monkeys to climb and pick twig samples. However, the collection of botanical material from rain-forest trees is a difficult and time-consuming task. The problem is not as great in forests consisting of a small number of tree species. In such forests it is generally possible to visually group the trees into species assemblages without knowing the... |

A large collection of Neozanthopsis americana (Rathbun, 1928) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) Cane River Formation in Louisiana, USA, represents the first opportunity to describe the species in detail. Detailed analysis of associated teleost otoliths and other vertebrate remains documents a palaeoenvironmental setting characterised by a soft-sediment, inner-shelf setting with normal salinity under tropical or subtropical conditions. Anatomical and morphometric analysis of 21 of the better-preserved crabs demonstrates that gender discrimination cannot be made from dorsal carapace characteristics and that the sample represents post-juvenile individuals. Exocuticle and endocuticle are preserved on some specimens and document the presence of erect... |
