Standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms to detect the impact of chemicals on freshwater or marine ecosystems is an urgent necessity. From the variety of methods, criteria, and test species proposed, simple standardized tests for algae, crustaceans, and fish are now close to being adopted at the international level for the freshwater environment. Despite the same urgency, very little has been achieved for the marine environment. Artemia is an extremely suitable test-species since, contrary to all other organisms, it does not require continuous maintenance of stock cultures. Unfortunately none of the Artemia toxicity tests that have been worked out so far can be adopted as such as a representative standard... |

Six Artemia populations from coastal and inland sites in Chile, ranging from 20 to 50 degrees latitude south, were compared morphologically. The study included reference samples of A. franciscana (San Fransisco Bay, California-USA) and A. persimilis (Buenos Aires, Argentina). These species are likely to be found in Chile. Samples from Peru (Piura) and Brazil (Macau, Rio Grande do Norte) are two known examples of deliberate introduction of A. franciscana. The hypothesis of A. franciscana being the dominant species in South America was tested by multivariate morphological analyses based on ten body measurements. In addition, laboratory cross-fertility tests were... |

The main goal of the project is to develop intensive industrial scale production systems for halibut fry. Halibut eggs were obtained from three brood stocks both by stripping and by natural spawning. Photoperiod manipulation is used to increase the spawning period, and spawning now takes place in the period February to June/July. The eggs are disinfected and incubated in up-stream conical tanks (8°C, darkness) and transferred to larval incubators after hatching. Two incubator-types are used; small glass bowls (3 liter), run stagnant or semi-stagnant, or large conical silos (0.7-15m³) run with continuous water flow (4-8°C, darkness). These different systems can be used to bring the yolk sac larvae of halibut up to the stage of first feeding. The yolk sac... |

1. A simple cylindrical hatching and separator box is described for Artemia salinanauplii (and other phototactic invertebrates), in which the "corner seeking effect" responsible for poor separation is avoided, and from which nauplii can be recovered very conveniently. 2. Separation is achieved by partly unscrewing an internal and closed cylinder from its fixed counter-part glued to the bottom of the box, till two slits are freed through which the nauplii migrate from the darkened internal hatching cylinder into the illuminated exterior compartment. Rescrewing the former cylinder separates the larvae from debris and unhatched eggs. |

A fluidized bed dryer for processing Artemia cysts at the temperatures above 40°C is described and evaluated. The design is directed towards electronic temperature regulation and optimal design of the drying unit. The described fluidized bed dryer proves to be reliable for cyst processing, using inflow air temperatures up to 90°C. The use of this elevated temperature ensures a higher drying rate, resulting in a drying capacity more than 4 times higher than when using inflow air of 40°C. Electronic temperature regulation resulted in a large flexibility of the temperature regime inside the drying unit. |

Artemia cysts have been collected from different saltworks and natural salt lakes in Tunisia. The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only Artemia tunisiana occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian Artemia have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp.... |

The brine shrimp Artemia , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in Artemia franciscana, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of Artemia nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 µg/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg... |

Dependable availability of quality fry to stock grow-out production systems has been one of the most critical factors in the commercial success of industrial production of fish and shellfish. Large-scale production of marine fish fry was realized only from the 1980s onwards. Although Japan was the pioneer with the red sea bream (Pagrus major), the most competitive hatchery methods were eventually developed in Europe for the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). Improved knowledge of larval dietary requirements, not the least with regard to (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), combined with the adoption of live-food enrichment protocols allowed the... |

The carotenoid composition of Artemia cysts from 17 geographical strains was studied. All-trans-canthaxanthins and cis-canthaxanthins were quantitatively determined using a non-aqueous reversed phase chromatographic method. In dehydrated cysts, the average cis- and trans-canthaxanthin levels (+/- SD) were 152 +/- 52 and 134 +/- 42 µg/g, respectively (range 38-227 and 67-201µg/g). The corresponding concentrations in hydrated cysts were (cis) 177 +/- 60 µg/g (range 47-271 µg/g) and (trans) 112 +/- 35 µg/g (range 52-169 µg/g). The cis/trans concentration ratios averaged 1.13 (range 0.57-1.47) and 1.60 (range... |

Lipids, particularly triglycerides, play an important role in early life stages of bivalves as a source of energy and essential fatty acids. Ingestion and incorporation of the fatty acids supplied through lipid emulsions were verified analytically for larval oysters Ostrea edulis. Changes of the fatty acid composition, in particular of (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA), were demonstrated in total lipids, polar lipids and triglycerides of oyster larvae fed the lipid emulsions as a supplement to Isochrysis galbana (clone T-Iso), and were dependent on the level and proportion of (n-3) HUFA present in the emulsion. Preliminary culture trials with Mercenaria mercenaria showed better growth... |

Two parthenogenetic Artemia populations from southern Africa, one from Swakopmund (Namibia) and another from Ankiembe saltworks (Madagascar) have been studied. The population of Namibia is mainly diploid (2n=42) with few tetraploid individuals (4n=84), while the one from Madagascar was found to be triploid (3n=63). No chromocenters have been observed in either of the two populations. The Namibian population has smaller cysts and nauplii compared to those of the Madagascar population. Discriminant analysis revealed significant differences in the biometry of the adults from the two populations. The two populations exhibited very good hatching characteristics. The study of fatty acid methyl esters revealed that the Namibian population... |

The brine shrimp Artemia , a typical inhabitant of hypersaline environments and characterized by a highly subdivided population structure, was used as a model to evaluate, under standardized laboratory conditions (at 65 ppt), primary reproductive traits (offspring quality and quantity) along with levels of reproductive isolation and degrees of divergence among populations. Intrapopulation experimental crosses and cross-fertility tests were evaluated in five populations (mostly A. franciscana) from coastal and inland environments in Chile, and in reference samples of A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, USA) and A. persimilis (Buenos Aires, Argentina), which are the species likely to... |

A standardized bioassay is described for the nutritional evaluation of Artemia nauplii and metanauplii using juvenile Mysidopsis bahia. This test is particularly suited to evaluate the dietary value of different strains and batches of Artemia . One day starved, fed or enriched Artemia metanauplii can also be tested. For this test, a homogenous population of freshly-released juveniles (less or equal to 24h-old) were produced in a mysid generator-separator. The test animals were transferred into an experimental apparatus, cultured under standard conditions and offered Artemia ad libitum. After 12 days, data on survival, length, individual dry... |
