The study was carried out to verify if there are differences in foraging frequency and behavior of Apis mellifera in two melon hybrids (10:00 – ‘Yellow melon’ and Sancho -‘Piel de Sapo’) in the municipality of Juazeiro, state of Bahia, Brazil. The frequency, behavior of visitors and the floral resource foraged were registered from 5:00 am to 6:00 pm. There was a significant difference in the frequency of visits when comparing hydrids (F = 103.74, p <0.0001), floral type (F = 47.25, p <0.0001) and resource foraged (F = 239.14, p <0.0001). The flowers of Sancho were more attractive to A. mellifera when compared with hybrid 10:00, which may be correlated to the morphology and floral resources available. This could be solved with scaled planting,...

A new approach to feed frequency studies and protein intake regulation in juvenile pirarucu Anais da ABC (AABC)
MATTOS,BRUNO O. DE; NASCIMENTO FILHO,EDUARDO C.T.; SANTOS,ALINE A.; BARRETO,KAYCK A.; SÁNCHEZ-VÁZQUEZ,FRANCISCO J.; FORTES-SILVA,RODRIGO.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate pirarucu's (Arapaima gigas) ability to trigger a self-feeding system to regulate protein intake between two standard diets that contained 39% and 49% of crude protein. The same system allowed the evaluation of daily feeding and locomotor activity rhythms. Eighteen fish (654.44±26.85g) were distributed into six 250 L tanks (3 fish/tank). Fish had free access to both diets (39% vs. 49% protein) by feeders (2 per tank), adapted to be activated by fish themselves. This system was connected to a computer system. After an adaptation period, fish learned to activate feeders and the mean food intake recorded was 2.14% of their body weight on a daily basis. Fish showed feeding (72.48%) and locomotor (72.49%) activity...

Identification of Tibicen cicada species by a Principal Components Analysis of their songs Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ohya,Eiji.
Specific identification of three Tibicen cicadas, T. japonicus, T. flammatus and T. bihamatus, by their chirping sounds was carried out using Principal Components Analysis (PCA). High quality recordings of each species were used as the standards. The peak and mean frequencies and the pulse rate were used as the variables. Out of 12 samples recorded in the fields one fell in the vicinity of T. japonicus and all other were positioned near T. bihamatus. Then the cluster analysis of the PCA scores clearly separated each species and allocated the samples in the same way.

Oceanographic parameters in continental margin of the State of Ceará (northeastern Brazil) deduced from C and O isotopes in foraminifers Anais da ABC (AABC)
Marques,Wanessa S.; Menor,Eldemar de A.; Sial,Alcides N.; Manso,Valdir A.V.; Freire,Satander S..
Specimens of Recent foraminifera of Amphistegina radiata, Peneroplis planatus and Globigerinoides ruber, from fifty samples of surface sediments of the continental margin of the State of Ceará, Brazil, have been analyzed for carbon and oxygen isotopes to investigate oceanographic parameters and determine the values of delta18O of the oceanic water. From a comparison between values of delta18O obtained for ocean water using the linear equations by (Craig and Gordon 1965) and the one by Wolff et al. (1998), it became evident that the former yielded a more reliable value (0.2‰ SMOW) than the latter. Lower values of delta18O for the ocean water in this continental margin resulted from continental water influence. Values of 18O (-0.3‰ to -1.5‰ PDB for benthic...

Modeling and mapping basal area of Pinus taeda L. plantation using airborne LiDAR data Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,CARLOS A.; KLAUBERG,CARINE; HUDAK,ANDREW T.; VIERLING,LEE A.; FENNEMA,SCOTT J.; CORTE,ANA PAULA D..
ABSTRACT Basal area (BA) is a good predictor of timber stand volume and forest growth. This study developed predictive models using field and airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data for estimation of basal area in Pinus taeda plantation in south Brazil. In the field, BA was collected from conventional forest inventory plots. Multiple linear regression models for predicting BA from LiDAR-derived metrics were developed and evaluated for predictive power and parsimony. The best model to predict BA from a family of six models was selected based on corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) and assessed by the adjusted coefficient of determination (adj. R²) and root mean square error (RMSE). The best model revealed an adj. R²=0.93 and RMSE=7.74%....

Clutch size in populations and species of cnemidophorines (Squamata: Teiidae) on the eastern coast of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENEZES,VANDERLAINE A.; ROCHA,CARLOS F.D..
We analyzed some reproductive aspects of 16 coastal populations, belonging to five lizard species (A. ocellifera, A. abaetensis, A. nativo, A. littoralis and C. lacertoides) from different restinga habitats along the eastern coast of Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate to what extent the reproductive aspects vary geographically and among species. For each female, we recorded the number of vitellogenic follicles, size and color of the largest follicle, presence and size of corpora lutea, and number and size of oviductal eggs. Clutch size of almost all coastal populations/species of Ameivula had little variation and most clutches were composed of two eggs. There was a significant relationship between female size and the mean clutch size when females from...

Ongoing quiescence in the Borborema Plateau Plague focus (Paraiba, Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
ZEPPELINI,CAIO G.; DE ALMEIDA,ALZIRA M.P.; CORDEIRO-ESTRELA,PEDRO.
Abstract Plague is a zoonosis caused by Yersinia pestis, whose cycle is based on a reservoir system composed of mammals and their fleas. Its transmission cycle presents long enzootic periods with undetected cases, sometimes misleading that the cycle is extinct. While surveillance activities in Brazil are being carried out only in some focal areas, the serologic results confirm the persistence of Y. pestis in all monitored areas. We studied the small mammal assembly and Y. pestis presencein the Borborema Plateau Focus within the state of Paraíba, which staged the last Brazilian plague outbreak (1986-1987), through aninventory and Y. pestis detection survey of small mammals in peridomestic and sylvatic areas from two municipalities in the state of...

Molecular farming of antimicrobial peptides: available platforms and strategies for improving protein biosynthesis using modified virus vectors Anais da ABC (AABC)
LEITE,MICHEL L.; SAMPAIO,KAMILA B.; COSTA,FABRÍCIO F.; FRANCO,OCTÁVIO L.; DIAS,SIMONI C.; CUNHA,NICOLAU B..
Abstract The constant demand for new antibiotic drugs has driven efforts by the scientific community to prospect for peptides with a broad spectrum of action. In this context, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have acquired great scientific importance in recent years due to their ability to possess antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activity. In the last two decades, plants have attracted the interest of the scientific community and industry as regards their potential as biofactories of heterologous proteins. One of the most promising approaches is the use of viral vectors to maximize the transient expression of drugs in the leaves of the plant Nicotiana benthamiana. Recently, the MagnifectionTM expression system was launched. This sophisticated commercial...

Structural and geochronological constraints on the evolution of the Juréia Massif, Registro Domain, State of São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Passarelli,Cláudia R.; Basei,Miguel A.S.; Prazeres-Filho,Hélcio J.; Siga-Jr.,Oswaldo; Szabó,Gergely A.J.; Marco-Neto,Joaquim.
The Juréia Massif, southeastern São Paulo State (Brazil), is part of the Registro Domain, limited to the north by the Cubatão-Itariri Shear System and to the south by the Serrinha Shear Zone. Mostly composed of migmatitic granitegneiss rocks, represents a Paleoproterozoic terrane (1.9-2.2 Ga) strongly deformed during the Neoproterozoic (750-580 Ma). The present tectonic scenario was established at the end of the Neoproterozoic, as a result of collages associated with the formation of Western Gondwana. The Ponta da Juréia, our study area within the Juréia Massif, is constituted by paragneisses (garnet-muscovite-biotite gneisses). The monazite U-Pb age of 750 Ma is related to a main regional metamorphic event that reached the high amphibolite facies,...

Effect of thermo-coupled processes on the behaviour of a clay barrier submitted to heating and hydration Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sánchez,Marcelo; Gens,Antonio; Olivella,Sebastia.
The storage of high level radioactive waste is still an unresolved problem of the nuclear industry, being geological disposal the most favoured option and, naturally, the one requiring the strongest geo-mechanical input. Most conceptual designs for the deep geological disposal of nuclear waste envisage placing the canisters containing the waste in horizontal drifts or vertical boreholes. The empty space surrounding the canisters is filled by an engineered barrier often made up of compacted swelling clay. Inthebarrierandthenearfield,significantthermo-hydro-mechanical(THM) phenomena take place that interact in a complex way. A good understanding of THM issues is, therefore, necessary to ensure a correct performance of engineered barriers and seals. The...

Marcinkiewicz strong laws for linear statistics of rho*-mixing sequences of random variables Anais da ABC (AABC)
Cai,Guang-Hui.
Strong laws are established for linear statistics that are weighted sums of a random sample. We show extensions of the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund strong laws under certain moment conditions on both the weights and the distribution. These not only generalize the result of Bai and Cheng (2000, Statist Probab Lett 46: 105-112) to rho*-mixing sequences of random variables, but also improve them.
