Predicting the Corn Basis in the Texas Triangle Area AgEcon
Mkrtchyan, Vardan; Welch, J. Mark; Power, Gabriel J..
This study develops a new and straightforward economic model of basis forecasting that outperforms the simple three-year average method suggested in much of the literature. We use monthly data of the corn basis in the Texas Triangle Area from February 1997 to July 2008. The results and the graphs indicate that the new model based on economic fundamentals performs better than basis estimates using a three-year moving average.

THE ACCOUNTANT AND FARM MANAGEMENT ADVICE AgEcon
Stone, John A..
The purpose of accounting is two-fold. First to record and summarize economic transactions for a given period, and second to interpret the account as an aid for making management decisions. Before we examine a more rational blend of the two ingredients of accounting it is necessary to examine the framework of principles and procedures within which accountants work. However, this discussion is primarily intended to, demonstrate how more accountants serving agriculture can overcome their pre-occupation with recording and summarizing, virtually aimed at assessing tax liability, and extend their influence to render professional advice to management. Economic transactions fall into two accounting groups; cash movements during the period and estimates or...

Mapping the Decoupling : Transfer Efficiency of the Single Farm Payment Scheme AgEcon
Courleux, F.; Guyomard, Herve; Piet, Laurent.
This paper focuses on the question of the transfer efficiency of the SFP scheme and represents graphically the results of an analytical framework with the seminal Surplus Transformation Curve initiated by Josling (1974) and developed by Gardner (1983). The special feature of the SFP scheme resides in the paradox that exists between the tradability of the entitlements and the activation constraint that creates a particular link to the land. The main result is that redistributive effects between landowners and farmers depend on the total number of entitlements, so they have to be considered as a lever to increase the transfer efficiency of the scheme.

Wells and welfare in the Ganga Basin: Public policy and private initiative in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India AgEcon
Shah, Tushaar.
This report analyzes how public policies designed to promote groundwater development over the past 50 years have failed in their promise, and how initiative by private agents can generate the social welfare the region needs so direly. The report outlines a five-pronged strategy for attacking eastern India's rural poverty through fuller utilization of its groundwater resources.

FINANCING SMALL-FARM DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA AgEcon
Baker, Chester B.; Bhargava, Vinay K..
Small farm credit is important in public programs of developing countries. It is supported to finance increased productivity through modernization and to replace the exploitive moneylender. However, expectations often exceed performance. Indian research suggests the discrepancy may be traced to failure to account for the needs of liquidity management. It suggests, too, that programs that are designed to account for liquidity management can lead to modernization and to improved viability of small farms as well.

OS EFEITOS DO TURISMO NO ESPAÇO RURAL NA GERAÇÃO DE RENDA E EMPREGO: O CASO DE SÃO MARTINHO (SC) AgEcon
Elesbao, Ivo.
The contemporary rural space needs to be considered in all its diversity. The non-agricultural activities, particularly those that involve leisure and tourism, have become increasingly important and may contribute to the local economy dynamics. The aim in this work was to identify the effects of tourism on income and job generation in the rural space. The basis of the qualitative research was a case study in São Martinho, a city in Santa Catarina state. Semi-structured interviews were done with the ten people responsible for the tourism enterprises in the district’s rural area. It was noticed that the resources originating from tourism were responsible for most of the entrepreneurs’ family revenue, contributing to an improvement in their lifestyle. There...

Measuring the Benefits to Advertising under Monopolistic Competition AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Crespi, John M.; Silva, Jena; Xia, Tian.
This paper determines the benefits and costs of firm-level advertising in a monopolistically competitive industry. The model is useful in an environment in which firm-level costs may be absent or imprecise. The empirical example uses data on the advertising for a new line of prune snacks by Sunsweet Growers between 2008 and 2010, revealing average benefit-cost estimates from $1.26 to $4.35 for every dollar allocated to the new product line.

Estimating the Economic Value of Specific Characteristics Associated with Angus Bulls Sold at Auction AgEcon
Jones, Rodney D.; Turner, Tyler; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Marsh, Thomas L..
The genetic traits of a purebred bull convey the reproductive and economic value to buyers. This study examines and compares the value of actual production weights (birth, weaning, and yearling weight), production expected progeny differences (EPDs) (birth, weaning, milk, and yearling), and ultrasound EPDs (carcass quality predictors) for purebred Angus bulls sold at auction. One EPD, birth weight, was valued by buyers more than its corresponding actual weight, though both actual weights and EPDs significantly impact price. Predictors of carcass quality were important in determining price. Finally, several individual animal factors and sale characteristics were significant in determining price.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE FARM CREDIT SUPPLY AgEcon
Dowsett, C.P..
The purpose of this paper is to consider some aspects of the problems of the farm credit supply. It is not intended to be exhaustive in its treatment of a very wide subject that has already been discussed so frequently. It is felt, however, that the recent emphasis on development (rural and other) justifies another look at the subject, especially ill relation to some modifications in the approach to farm credit and the facilities for its supply. Sir John Crawford has said that discussion of the subject of rural credit "easily lends itself to emotion". I shall endeavour to avoid this pitfall. At the outset I would suggest that, for a subject so significant as the supply of farm credit in the Australian economy, the extent of our study of it in a detailed...

EFICIÊNCIA ECONÔMICA DAS POLÍTICAS DE MICROCRÉDITO RURAL NO ESTADO DE MATO GROSSO DO SUL AgEcon
Gomes, Paulo Cesar Oliveira; Lima, Deise Guadalupe.

RESPONSES OF AGRICULTURAL BIOENERGY PRODUCTION IN BRANDENBURG (GERMANY) TO ECOLOGICAL, ECONOMIC AND LEGAL CHANGES: AN APPLICATION OF HOLLING'S ADAPTIVE CYCLE AgEcon
Grundmann, Philipp; Ehlers, Melf-Hinrich; Uckert, Gotz.
Agricultural bioenergy production faces dynamics such as yield fluctuations, volatile prices, resource competition, new regulation and policy, innovation and climate change. To what extent is bioenergy production able to adapt to changing environments and to overcome critical events? We investigate in detail how the agricultural bioenergy sector in the German State of Brandenburg adapted to diverse past events. The analysis rests on the adaptive-cycle concept of HOLLING and GUNDERSON (2002a), which has been widely applied in socialecological systems research. Brandenburg’s bioenergy production displays properties of a system in the exploitation phase, including a low potential and a high resilience of the system and a low connectedness within the system....

DO COUNTER-CYCLICAL PAYMENTS IN THE FSRI ACT CREATE INCENTIVES TO PRODUCE? AgEcon
Anton, Jesus; Le Mouel, Chantal.
Analytical results in the literature suggest that counter-cyclical payments create risk-related incentives to produce even if they were "decoupled" under certainty (Hennessy, 1998). This paper develops a framework to assess the risk-related incentives to produce created by commodity programmes like the loan deficiency payments and the Counter-Cyclical Payments (CCP) in the FSRI Act. Because CCP are paid based on fixed production quantities they have a weaker risk-reducing impact than loan deficiency payments. The latter have a direct impact through the variance of the producer price distributions, while the impact of CCP is due only to the covariance between the CCP and the producer price distributions. The methodology developed by Chavas and Holt (1990)...
