Coenzyme Q10 and its effects in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases BJPS
Santos,Graciela Cristina dos; Antunes,Lusânia Maria Greggi; Santos,Antonio Cardozo dos; Bianchi,Maria de Lourdes Pires.
According to clinical and pre-clinical studies, oxidative stress and its consequences may be the cause or, at least, a contributing factor, to a large number of neurodegenerative diseases. These diseases include common and debilitating disorders, characterized by progressive and irreversible loss of neurons in specific regions of the brain. The most common neurodegenerative diseases are Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been extensively studied since its discovery in 1957. It is a component of the electron transportation chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, generating energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The property of CoQ10 to act as...

Bioisosteric modification on melatonin: synthesis of new naphthalene derivatives, in vitro antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity studies BJPS
Shirinzadeh,Hanif; Ghalia,Mohammed; Tascioglu,Alev; Adjali,Ferial Intissar; Gunesacar,Gulsen; Gurer-Orhan,Hande; Suzen,Sibel.
Melatonin (MLT) is a strong free radical scavenger that protects the body from the deleterious effects of excess oxidants. Synthesis of MLT analogue compounds with antioxidant potency has recently attracted the interest of researchers. In general, the strategy consists of modifying the groups in the different sites of the indole ring or replacing the indole ring with an analogue. As part of our ongoing research, the antioxidant capacity and cytotoxicity of newly synthesized MLT analogue naphthalene derivatives were evaluated. The radical scavenging activity was tested by a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Most of the synthesized compounds showed significant antioxidant activity in comparison to MLT. The structure-activity relationship was...

Ascorbic acid biosynthesis: a precursor study on plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Barata-Soares,Anderson D.; Gomez,Maria Luiza P. A.; Mesquita,Carlos Henrique de; Lajolo,Franco M..
Since the first isolation of ascorbic acid (AsA) in 1928, few papers have been published regarding the biosynthesis of AsA in plants, especially in fruits. It took as long as 1998, before Wheeler, Jones and Smirnoff, based on a study with Arabidopsis leaves, proposed what can be considered the main pathway of biosynthesis of AsA, in which L-galactose (L-GAL) is a key precursor. This paper reports the effectiveness of some precursors (cold or radiolabeled) in the biosynthesis of AsA in different plants: green sweet pepper, white-pulp guava, red-pulp guava, papaya and strawberry at two ripening stages (mature green and ripe for papaya and mature green and half red for strawberry) and broccoli. The 'Smirnoff-Wheeler' pathway was functioning and active in all...

Cadmium-Zinc interactions in a hydroponic system using Ceratophyllum demersum L.: adaptive ecophysiology, biochemistry and molecular toxicology Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Aravind,Parameswaran; Prasad,Majeti Narasimba Vara.
The interaction between an essential micronutrient, Zn and a toxic non-essential element, Cd has been comprehensively reviewed based on our experiments conducted with Ceratophyllum demersum L. in a hydroponic system. Since Cd and Zn belong to the group IIB transition elements and show similarities in chemistry, geochemistry and environmental properties, it would be one of the elemental pairs of choice to investigate metal-metal interactions. Evidence in support of the protective role of Zn against Cd toxicity in Ceratophyllum demersum L. is presented in this review. Based on our experimental results, we conclude that the antioxidant properties of Zn play an important role in counteracting Cd toxicity.
