Effect of Time of Permanence of Host Fruits in the Field on Natural Parasitism of Anastrepha spp. (Diptera: Tephritidae) Neotropical Entomology
AGUIAR-MENEZES,ELEN L.; MENEZES,EURIPEDES B..
The present work evaluated the influence of time of permanence of the fruit in the field after its abscission on natural parasitism of Anastrepha spp. In February 2000, three trees of Spanish prune (Spondias purpurea L.) and three guava tree (Psidium guajava L.) were selected in the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sampling consisted of 250 infested fruits collected per tree. Fifty of them were taken immediately to the laboratory in order to obtain Tephritidae pupae (0-day exposure). The remaining fruits were divided in four batches and placed in plastic trays on a layer of sand, underneath the tree canopy. Every other day, the fruits of one tray were transported to the laboratory (2, 4, 6 and 8 days exposure)....

Temporal and spatial variation of Stenoma cathosiota Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae) caterpillar abundance in the cerrado of Brasilia, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Morais,Helena C.; Cabral,Bérites C.; Mangabeira,Jacimary A.; Diniz,Ivone R..
The caterpillars of Stenoma cathosiota Meyrick feed on Roupala montana Aubl. (Proteaceae) in the cerrado of the Distrito Federal, Brazil. They construct shelters by joining leaves of the plant where they feed and pupate. The caterpillars are parasitized by a wasp (Hymenoptera: Brachonidae), which emerges from the pupae. Caterpillar abundance and parasitism frequency were associated in an area of frequently burned cerrado (biennial fire) and in another area that burns sporadically (1987 and 1994). For S. cathosiota, the variation among years in a single area, with sporadic fires, was greater than the variation among areas with different fire regimes. Caterpillar abundance among years was significantly different in the area that burns sporadically (chi² =...

Diapause in fruit fly parasitoids in the Recôncavo Baiano, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Carvalho,Romulo da S..
Diapause has been poorly investigated in tephritid fruit flies and in associated parasitoids in tropical regions. In this work, diapause in larval-pupal parasitoids of fruit flies is reported for the region of the Reconcavo Baiano, Brazil. Diapause was recorded for individuals of four native species [Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brethes) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae)] and of one exotic braconid [Diachasmimorpha longicaudata Ashmead]. Diapausing parasitoids were obtained from fruit fly puparia in fruits collected between November 1998 and April 2000. In all, 1.4% of individuals underwent diapause, being D. areolatus the most frequent. The development time for this...
