This article presents a case study of a large international company in the sector of distribution of food, specializing in the supply of frozen potatoes, established in Brazil in the city of Sao Paulo. The focus of the study was to identify strategies for the production and distribution used by the company as a factor of competitiveness. Using primary and secondary data, it was possible to define the parameters of competitiveness of the company, and the characterization of the industry. Thus, could be noted that: i) the marketing of potatoes in Brazil has undergone radical changes in recent years, ii) that the importation of frozen potatoes, are reaching considerable slices of the market, reducing further the disputed Brazilian market, and iii) that McCain... |

An attempt is made to evaluate the competitiveness of the fisheries and aquaculture industries of some Mediterranean countries. Revealed Comparative Advantage indices of Italian, French, Greek, Portuguese and Spanish fish products are estimated, in order to gain new insights regarding the position of these products in the market of the European Union, in terms of competitiveness. In addition, this study sheds light on the evolution of competitiveness over the last decade. The estimated Comparative Advantage indices reveal that there is a wide range of competitiveness among fish products in Mediterranean countries. In addition, almost all countries alter their competitive ranking throughout the study period. Consequently, Mediterranean fisheries and... |

In this paper, we generalise the constant market shares (CMS) framework, with particular attention to the underlying theoretical conditions required for diagnostic interpretation. The approach is applied to the analysis of the export performance of the Australian processed food sector in South-East Asia over the period 1980–2003. We conclude that the usefulness of CMS analysis for evaluating a country’s international trade performance depends upon the empirical validity of the aggregation assumptions implicit in the diagnostic interpretation. |

The process of transition and, within it, the agricultural transformation in the Western Balkan countries resulted, in the first phase, in the weakening of the developmental performances in agriculture. Such tendencies widened the gap between the countries of the Western Balkans and the EU countries, which continued their steady increase in agricultural productivity. Unfavorable tendencies in agricultural productivity adversely affected its competitiveness, and, consequently, the competitiveness of the rural economy as a whole. The effect of the low agricultural competitiveness on the competitiveness of the rural economy is determined by the importance of agriculture in the rural economy, which is substantial in the West Balkan countries. |

The objective of the paper is to investigate the impact of co-operation amongst stakeholders of the food chain on enterprise competitiveness. The analysis focuses on the Spanish wheat to bread chain. A theoretical model is developed which covers the main components that define competitiveness (profitability, turnover, market share, customer loyalty and product quality), quality supply chain relationship (trust, commitment and satisfaction) and the main factors explaining supply chain relationship (i.e. quality and frequency of the communication, personal bounds, etc.). The Spanish wheat to bread supply chain has been chosen to empirically test the model. This sector is very fragmented all along the chain, with a high number of wheat farmers, millers and... |

This article analyzes the exportation of soy, and other derived products, in Brazil and in Paraná state, from 1990 to 2007. The methodological procedures consist of identification of the most representative products of the chain - the soy in grain, the soy bran and soy oil, and analysis of the results using the Constant Market-Share (CMS) model. The sources of the growth in exportations were divided into four components: the growth of world-wide commerce, definition of the exportation guideline, destination of the exported products and the competitiveness effects. In the period studied, the soy complex as a whole diversified its commercial partners due to a decrease in the concentration of the Brazilian and paranaense exportations. However, a concentration... |

Given that the fast transformations occurred in national and international scenery point out to a necessity of gain of efficiency to increase in competitiveness to the firms, the environment which into they are and into they develop, assume a vital importance as been the supporter foundation of this development. For this environment can be understood as the process of space concentration of many correlative segments of a production chain, also called as clusterization process, which this special conformation gives to the firms special conditions to develops the superior competitive advantages than the others firms isolated. In this sense, this paper aim to arise how occurs the process of conformation of a big cluster, culminating in satisfaction of ten... |

The dairy sector in the CEC countries had to cope with tremendous adjustment pressures in the 90ies. Privatization and liberalization contributed to intense competition on the CEC countries’ dairy market. Major problems that impede the competitiveness of this sector are a considerable fragmentation of the dairy processing industry, pronounced excess capacities, high seasonality of milk production and low investment activities. The latter delays the modernization of processing technologies and thus hinders quality improvements and the adjustments of hygienic conditions as well as product and process standards to EU norms. These problems are common to all CEC countries, though to different degrees. In addition, especially in Bulgaria and Romania, but also in... |

The sugar sector is small in agricultural sector, occupying 1.5% of the cultivable land area and accounting for approximately 1.2% of agricultural GDP (excluding processing which probably accounts for a further 1%). It does, however, account for 6.5% of all budgetary payments to agriculture, showing its disproportionate dependence on taxpayers' money. Sugar production in Croatia is characterized by high production costs, struggling with a strong competition at the world market. Despite the results of the competitiveness study, in which the DRC calculation showed that sugar production is not internationally competitive, one of the basic characteristics of our foreign trade in sugar till 2003 was high exports. Sharp shift in the EU sugar policy will result... |
