A magyar tejvertikum diagnózisa AgEcon
Popp, Jozsef; Potori, Norbert; Papp, Gergely.
Magyarország tejtermelése az EU-csatlakozást követően visszaesett. A többnyire alacsony átvételi árak és a szigorúbb minőségi követelmények miatt az elmúlt években sok tejtermelő kiszorult a piacról. A tej- és tejtermékek külkereskedelmében 2004 óta mind volumenben, mind értékben nettó importőri pozícióba kerültünk. A tejkvóta-rendszer fokozatos kivezetése (a hazai kvóta kihasználtsága alig éri el a 85%-ot) a hazai tejágazatot közvetetten érintheti: a hatékonyabban ter¬melő tagállamok kerülhetnek előnybe a számunkra fontos olaszországi piacon, így értékesítési lehetőségeink szűkülhetnek, a hazai árakra még nagyobb nyomás nehezedhet. Magyarországon a tejfeldolgozás koncentráltsága a vállalatok nagy száma ellenére viszonylag erős. A tejipar kettős prés...

Constant market shares analysis: uses, limitations and prospects AgEcon
Ahmadi-Esfahani, Fredoun Z..
In this paper, we generalise the constant market shares (CMS) framework, with particular attention to the underlying theoretical conditions required for diagnostic interpretation. The approach is applied to the analysis of the export performance of the Australian processed food sector in South-East Asia over the period 1980–2003. We conclude that the usefulness of CMS analysis for evaluating a country’s international trade performance depends upon the empirical validity of the aggregation assumptions implicit in the diagnostic interpretation.

EU Preferential Partners in Search of New Policy Strategies for Agriculture: The Case of Citrus Sector in Trinidad and Tobago AgEcon
Jacque, Andrew Eliel; Dell'Aquila, Crescenzo; Perito, Maria Angela.
The paper assesses the competitive position of T&T's citrus industry and explains the declining productivity. It covers supply chain and agricultural trade policy issues and involves assembling two Policy Analysis Matrices, either with full cost of production or excluding establishment costs. Domestic and trade policy support shows significant for the sector. Production is internationally competitive, or possesses comparative advantage, only if costs of establishment are excluded. These results suggest that free trade agreements under the FTAA and the ACP-EU would work against the planting of new orchards and reinforce the decline of the sector.

A támogatások szerepe a magyar mezőgazdaságban AgEcon
Kovacs, Gabor.

PARTIAL PRODUCTIVITY OF AGRICULTURE IN THE WESTERN BALKAN COUNTRIES – IMPLICATION FOR COMPETITIVENESS OF THE RURAL ECONOMY AgEcon
Zekic, Stanislav; Gajic, Milivoj; Lovre, Koviljko.
The process of transition and, within it, the agricultural transformation in the Western Balkan countries resulted, in the first phase, in the weakening of the developmental performances in agriculture. Such tendencies widened the gap between the countries of the Western Balkans and the EU countries, which continued their steady increase in agricultural productivity. Unfavorable tendencies in agricultural productivity adversely affected its competitiveness, and, consequently, the competitiveness of the rural economy as a whole. The effect of the low agricultural competitiveness on the competitiveness of the rural economy is determined by the importance of agriculture in the rural economy, which is substantial in the West Balkan countries.

ANÁLISE DA COMPETITIVIDADE DO AÇÚCAR BRASILEIRO NO MERCADO INTERNACIONAL, 1990 A 2004 AgEcon
Martins, Alexandra Pereira; Maciel, Marilia Fernandes; Rosado, Patricia Lopes; Lirio, Viviani Silva.

Co-operation and economic relationship as determinants for competitiveness in the food sector: the Spanish wheat to bread chain AgEcon
de Magistris, Tiziana; Gracia, Azucena.
The objective of the paper is to investigate the impact of co-operation amongst stakeholders of the food chain on enterprise competitiveness. The analysis focuses on the Spanish wheat to bread chain. A theoretical model is developed which covers the main components that define competitiveness (profitability, turnover, market share, customer loyalty and product quality), quality supply chain relationship (trust, commitment and satisfaction) and the main factors explaining supply chain relationship (i.e. quality and frequency of the communication, personal bounds, etc.). The Spanish wheat to bread supply chain has been chosen to empirically test the model. This sector is very fragmented all along the chain, with a high number of wheat farmers, millers and...

The growing of vegetables, one of the strategic possibility of the Hungarian agricultural improvement AgEcon
Bene, Csaba; Marselek, Sandor.
The development of market-gardening can be one of the hopeful possibilities of the agriculture; the function is still competitive but its competitiveness is decreasing. It is national, consumer and economic interest to improve the sector as the unemployment in the countryside can also be reduced. During the producing we must attach the importance to the quality as in the EU only that farmer can suit the requirements who can usually deliver reliable quality product. The sector is deficient in funds, so the technical, innovative and logistic improvement hung behind the requests. This fact has to be changed. Our advantageous conditions open the door to increase production output and to use the logistic possibilities thanked to our geographical location. An...

O COMPLEXO AGROINDUSTRIAL DA SOJA NO BRASIL E NO PARANÁ: EXPORTAÇÕES E COMPETITIVIDADE NO PERÍODO 1990 A 2007 AgEcon
Caldarelli, Carlos Eduardo; Camara, Marcia Regina Gabardo da; Sereia, Vanderlei Jose.
This article analyzes the exportation of soy, and other derived products, in Brazil and in Paraná state, from 1990 to 2007. The methodological procedures consist of identification of the most representative products of the chain - the soy in grain, the soy bran and soy oil, and analysis of the results using the Constant Market-Share (CMS) model. The sources of the growth in exportations were divided into four components: the growth of world-wide commerce, definition of the exportation guideline, destination of the exported products and the competitiveness effects. In the period studied, the soy complex as a whole diversified its commercial partners due to a decrease in the concentration of the Brazilian and paranaense exportations. However, a concentration...

Effects of the Public Policies on the Natural Rubber Production in Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso States AgEcon
Rosado, Patricia Lopes; Tosto, Sergio Gomes; Gomes, Marilia Fernandes Maciel; do Carmo, Ciriaca A.F. Santana.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the government intervention on the expansion of the natural rubber production in Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso states. The method used was the policy analysis matrix, developed by MONKE and PEARSON (1989). The results showed that the production of natural rubber in those states has conditions to face the liberalization changes that have been taking place in the international market. The government's role in that process is relevant in order to promote the development of that activity and to reduce the distortions, since these impede that the market signals guide the producer decisions in an integrated economy into the world market. Some policy measures can be carried out to improve the competitiveness...

The Trends of the Agrarian Foreign Trade of CR after Accession to EU, Competitiveness of Commodities AgEcon
Burianova, Jaroslava.
The extent of agricultural foreign trade (AFT) of the Czech Republic (CR) increased markedly after accession to EU. The first part of this article is devoted to the trends during the period of 2004 – 2008. Detailed analysis of the CR AFT has been carried out for all 24 items of the basic food goods during the same period for the assessment of competitiveness of individual commodities. The Balass indicator RCA (Revealed Comparative Advantage) was used for this analysis, as well as the Michaely index that shows the specific measure of specialization for export. The method of logarithmic decomposition, which makes it possible to determine the effect of prices and quantities to net export has also been used. This paper was processed within the framework of the...

The Dairy Sector in the Central European Candidate (CEC) Countries – The Status of Restructuring and Future Challenges AgEcon
Hartmann, Monika.
The dairy sector in the CEC countries had to cope with tremendous adjustment pressures in the 90ies. Privatization and liberalization contributed to intense competition on the CEC countries’ dairy market. Major problems that impede the competitiveness of this sector are a considerable fragmentation of the dairy processing industry, pronounced excess capacities, high seasonality of milk production and low investment activities. The latter delays the modernization of processing technologies and thus hinders quality improvements and the adjustments of hygienic conditions as well as product and process standards to EU norms. These problems are common to all CEC countries, though to different degrees. In addition, especially in Bulgaria and Romania, but also in...

Sugar sector in Croatia: competitive or not? AgEcon
Franic, Ramona; Kumric, Ornella.
The sugar sector is small in agricultural sector, occupying 1.5% of the cultivable land area and accounting for approximately 1.2% of agricultural GDP (excluding processing which probably accounts for a further 1%). It does, however, account for 6.5% of all budgetary payments to agriculture, showing its disproportionate dependence on taxpayers' money. Sugar production in Croatia is characterized by high production costs, struggling with a strong competition at the world market. Despite the results of the competitiveness study, in which the DRC calculation showed that sugar production is not internationally competitive, one of the basic characteristics of our foreign trade in sugar till 2003 was high exports. Sharp shift in the EU sugar policy will result...

Kannapiran, Chinna A.; Fleming, Euan M..
The contribution by tree crop industries to economic development in Papua New Guinea (PNG) depends to a considerable extent on their economic efficiency in terms of competitiveness and comparative advantage of domestic production and export marketing. These advantages for the four major tree crop products - coffee, coconut, cocoa, and palm oil - are analysed in this study. The aim is to ascertain whether PNG is an efficient producer of these tree crop exports in terms of international competitiveness and comparative advantage, and whether these industries deserve continuing government support.
