CARRARO-LEMES,C.F.; SCHEFFER-BASSO,S.M.; DEUNER,C.C.; BERGHAHN,S.C.T..
ABSTRACT: The recognized allelopathic activity of oats as a soil-cover plant induces the study of the potential of their germplasm. The objective of this study is to verify if there is genotype variability in the Avena spp. with regard to allelopathic activity. Extracts of A. strigosa ‘Agro Quaraí’, ‘Agro Esteio’, ‘Embrapa139’, ‘AF 12104’, ‘AF 12109’, ‘AF 12202’, ‘AF 12209’, A. sativa ‘UPFPS Farroupilha’ and ‘AF 1345 Ucraniana,’ were prepared in three concentrations w/v (5 g, 10 g, and 20 g of dry mass 100 mL-1). The experiment was conducted in a germination chamber for 15 days, with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as the recipient plant. There was complete inhibition of germination under 20% w/v extracts and partial inhibition at 10% w/v. Only 5% w/v observed...

The seed coat as a modulator of seed-environment relationships in Fabaceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
SOUZA,FRANCISCO H. DÜBBERN DE; MARCOS-FILHO,JÚLIO.
The seed coat is one of the main determinants of seed germination, vigor and longevity potentials. It is also intimately associated with temporal and spatial dispersion of seed germination in a large number of plant species. The understanding of its properties and characteristics may explain, anticipate or even allow the modification of seed performance under certain environmental conditions. There is a growing volume of evidence associating seed coat characteristics to specific seed problems. For example, susceptibility to mechanical damage is related to lignin content of the seed coat, while seed longevity and tolerance to field weathering depends on seed coat integrity. Seed performance in many legumes has been associated with certain seed coat...

Variation between three Eremanthus (Asteraceae) species in their ability to form a seed bank Rev. Bras. Bot.
Velten,Simone Batalha; Garcia,Queila Souza.
Knowledge on seed bank function is fundamental for understanding the species regeneration patterns. This investigation was carried out to compare the ability of Eremanthus elaeagnus (Mart. ex DC.) Schultz-Bip, E. glomerulatus Less., and E. incanus (Less.) Less. to form a soil seed bank. Seeds (aquenes) of each of these three species were collected, stored in the laboratory and subsequently buried in the same area where they were collected, inside nylon bags. The bags were collected monthly or bimonthly for germination tests under continuous light and also in darkness at 20 °C (E. elaeagnus e E. glomerulatus) and at 25 °C (E. incanus). After 12 months, a further series of tests compared the germination of achenes that had been buried in soil and compared...

Germination of seeds of tropical pioneer species under controlled and natural conditions Rev. Bras. Bot.
VÁLIO,IVANY FERRAZ MARQUES; SCARPA,FABIANO MICHELETTO.
Seed germination of eight tropical pioneer species (Cecropia hololeuca, C. pachystachya, C. glazioui, Solanum gracillimum, S. granuloso-leprosum, S. tabacifolium, Croton floribundus and Miconia chamissois) was studied. In controlled conditions, alternating temperatures were tested from 5 to 25 °C. Low Red:Far Red ratios (R:FR) were also examined. In the field, germination was evaluated in gaps and under the canopy. With the exception of Croton floribundus, all other species were photoblastic in that higher germination percentages were found under light conditions (S. tabacifolium behaved as a negative photoblastic species at some temperatures). No relationship was found between germination percentage and alternating temperature. Germination was markedly...

Dousseau,Sara; Alvarenga,Amauri Alves de; Alves,Eduardo; Chaves,Izabel de Souza; Souza,Elma dos Santos; Alves,Juliana da Silva.
In this work we attempted to characterize the diaspores and the germination process of Piper aduncum L., as well as to verify the influence of the interaction between presence and absence of light (photoperiod of 12 hours and dark) and temperature (25 °C, 30 °C and 20-30 °C) and also of gibberellin (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg L-1) on the root protrusion and normal seedlings formation. The diaspores are very small with a thousand seed weight of 0.3645 g, 13% moisture and protein reserve. Diaspores are strict positively photoblastic in the tested temperature range and the optimum temperature for root protrusion was 30 °C, while for normal seedlings was 25 °C. The previous permanence in the dark led to an increase in the speed of root protrusion and...

BARBOSA,ANDRÉA RODRIGUES; YAMAMOTO,KIKYO; VALIO,IVANY F. M..
Vochysia tucanorum Mart. (Vochysiaceae) is a very widely distributed species in the cerrado and forests in Brazil, from the State of Bahia to Paraná. Its seed germination was analysed under eight treatments using different conditions of light and temperature. Up to 73 days, at least ca. 93% of the seeds germinated in all treatments, except under alternating temperatures of 35°/10°C (62%). Light enhanced germination, except under constant temperature of 25°C when seeds are not photoblastic. At this temperature, the highest percentage of germination was found. Initial vegetative growth was analysed by comparing the effects of shading, by means of different percentages of full daylight (100%, 45%, 10.6%, 4.8%), and soils from cerrado and forest. During 123...

Ecophysiology and respiratory metabolism during the germination of Inga sessilis (Vell.) Mart. (Mimosaceae) seeds subjected to hypoxia and anoxia Rev. Bras. Bot.
OKAMOTO,JANETE MAYUMI; JOLY,CARLOS ALFREDO.
This paper presents a study on the respiratory metabolism of germinating seeds of Inga sessilis subjected to normoxia, hypoxia and anoxia. Although it is typical of environments where waterlogging seldom occurs, 40% of its seeds are able to germinate under hypoxia; yet, anoxia periods over 96 h are lethal to the seeds. Ethanol is the main product of the seeds anaerobic metabolism, but the steep increase in lactate after 24 h anoxia or 48 h hypoxia may explain the drop in seed viability.

Different harvest times and physiological quality of coriander seeds AGRIAMBI
Alkimim,Emilly R.; David,Andréia M. S. de S.; Sousa,Tiago V.; Rodrigues,Cleiton G.; Amaro,Hugo T. R..
ABSTRACT The season of harvest is one of the most important factors influencing seed quality. This study evaluated the effect of different harvesting times on the physiological quality of Coriandrum sativum L. seeds, cv. Palmeira. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six treatments (harvest times) and four replications. The experiment was conducted during the months of April to October 2010. The first moment to harvest seeds was carried out 15 days after full bloom, when approximately 50% of plants were in flowering phase. Other harvests (22, 29, 36, 43 and, 50 days after bloom) were carried out at 7 days intervals until the seeds reached 16.0% of moisture, which occurred in the 6th harvest. Immediately after each harvest, the seeds were...

Proline and trehalose in maize seeds germinating under low osmotic potentials AGRIAMBI
Queiroz,Rafaela J. B.; Cazetta,Jairo O..
ABSTRACT Although it is relatively well known that adult plants tend to accumulate proline and trehalose in their tissues as a physiological mechanism in response to drought, there is scarce information about the development of this physiological response in seeds. Thus, the objective of this research was to verify if maize seeds are able to develop mechanism of osmoprotection, when are germinating under low osmotic potential, and the possibility to use the levels of trehalose and proline in a defined seed part, aiming to differentiate genotypes regarding drought tolerance. The experiment was performed as a factorial arrangement of 2 x 5 (2 hybrids x 5 osmotic potential) within a completely randomized design, with four replicates. It was found that the...

Changes in hormonal balance as key to reserve degradation after dormancy overcoming in Annona macroprophyllata and Annona purpurea seeds Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ferreira,Gisela; De-la-Cruz-Chacón,Ivan; González-Esquinca,Alma Rosa.
Abstract Studies on the effect of the applying of phytoregulators to overcome seed dormancy have been carried out in Annonaceae species, thus the endogenous relationship between abscisic acid and gibberellins after the application of phytoregulators needs to be known in these species. Considering the importance of hormonal balance in dormancy mechanisms, the aim of this research was to elucidate how endogenous ABA and GA concentrations change after the application of phytoregulators in seeds and how these changes affect reserve degradation during germination of Annona macroprophyllata and A. purpurea seeds. Seeds were submitted to three conditions: - no soaking, soaking-in-water and soaking-in-GA4+7+benzyladenine. ABA, GA, lipids, proteins, and total...
