This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. The demand for organically produced forage seed is increasing rapidly as organic livestock farming expands. EU regulations stipulate that from 1 January 2004 organically produced seed must be used in organic production systems. The production of forage seed in an organically acceptable manner to meet the current Seed Certification standards is a significant challenge to the seed producer. Conventional systems of grass seed production use inorganic nitrogen applied at specific stages of crop development and appropriate use of herbicides to produce high quality seed, reduce weed content and minimise seed cleaning costs. The development of organically acceptable methods of weed control and... |

Organic agriculture demands new educational processes, to create competences on individuals transforming their lives. It is not about accumulation of knowledge, but it is interpretative, proactive and assertive knowledge and attitudes within the community context and the world movement. Education on organic agriculture should strengthen reflexive consciousness of participants and their life experiences with nature. The pedagogic process should bring tools for internal transformation of mental structures and social tools to modify the surrounding environment. This is achieved by working basic concepts, practical activities and artistic experiences in a dynamic and dialectic way. |

In few years Danish organic protein crops may be used as ingredients in feed for organic fish in partial replacement of fish meal protein. Fish meal is currently the primary protein source in feed for organic fish. Fish meal is manufactured by industrial fish caught among sustainable stocks, but even natural this protein source is not defined as organic and is as well a limited resource. Therefore, it is necessary to replace as much as possible of the fish meal protein with competitive organic vegetable protein sources with high protein content as well as a relevant amino acid composition compared to that in fish meal. Opposite optimization of conventional fish feed the regulation does not allow addition of artificial amino acids to feed for organic... |

Organic farming is under constant pressure to reinvent itself by adopting new technologies. This article examines the role of precaution in organic farmers’ assessments of new technologies, and asks how their assessments draw on different types of knowledge. The article further explores how knowledge type compares to the role of knowledge and precaution expressed in the principles of organic farming as defined by the organic movement organisation, IFOAM. Results from a study of the introduction of sewage sludge as an alternative source of nutrients in organic agriculture are presented. Empirically, this case-study builds on the analysis of five focus groups made up of Danish organic farmers. While some farmers called for precaution, supporting this with... |

The Danish project “Organic Aquaculture” the link between sustainable production and superior products” is examining the availability of relevant organically produced crops with a high protein content to be used as raw materials for fish feed. Fish meal is the main source of protein for fish feed. On a global scale the production of fish meal will not increase. There is a demand for developing sustainable protein sources as a substitution for fish meal. Protein from crops and legumes is an obvious solution, however, the crops and legumes need to be processed into fractions with a higher protein content in order to compete with fish meal. The process development was carried out at The Danish Technological Institute’s pilot plant located in Sdr. Stenderup,... |

Biodynamic agriculture and organic farming have been regarded as having different provenances and having arisen independently. The present account introduces the ‘missing link’ between the two. In 1938 Ehrenfried Pfeiffer published the milestone book on biodynamics: Bio-Dynamic Farming and Gardening. In 1940 Lord Northbourne published Look to the Land, the work that introduced the term ‘organic farming’. In the summer of the intervening year, Pfeiffer travelled from Switzerland to Northbourne’s estate in Kent, UK, and presented for British farmers a nine day course on biodynamics, the Betteshanger Summer School and Conference on Bio-Dynamic Farming, 1-9 July 1939. Pfeiffer was supported by the pre-eminent biodynamic scholar-practitioners, Otto Eckstein and... |

Biodynamics has played a key role in environmental and sustainable development. Rudolf Steiner founded the Experimental Circle of Anthroposophic Farmers and Gardeners at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) in 1924. The task for the Experimental Circle was to test Steiner’s ‘hints’ for a new and sustainable agriculture, to find out what works, and to publish and tell the world. Ehrenfried published his book Bio-Dynamic Farming and Gardening in New York in 1938, fulfilling Steiner’s directive. In the interval, 1924-1938, 39 individual Americans joined the Experimental Circle. They were the pioneers of biodynamics and organics in USA, and finally their names and locations are revealed. Of the 39 members, three received copies of the Agriculture Course in both... |

Organic Agriculture (OA) is a reply to Global Society‘s interest in food safety and enviromental conservation. Many European countries have significantly developed the OA sector, where Organic Animal Farming (OAF) systems hold a major part. Since, OA principles, methods and products are constantly evolving, an increasing number of agricultural agencies are using Web sites or portals to provide OA information to stakeholders. However, finding trustworthy information on OA is still time consuming, fragmented and associated with linguistic obstacles. This paper reports a new on-line service that provides (a) access to multilingual, specialized, updated and certified on-line information covering all OA plant and animal production aspects, (b) access to... |

TThe latest statistics reveal that Australia now has more certified organic agriculture hectares than the rest of the world put together. Organics is a major success story for Australia and the achievement of global majority (51%) is an important organics milestone. Organic agriculture is reported from 181 countries. Australia reported 35,645,038 certified organic hectares and the world total is 69,845,243 hectares. Australia has been the world leader in organics, based on certified organic hectares, since global statistics of organics were first collated and published in 2000. In the two decades since then, global organics has grown at 12% per annum (pa), year on year, while Australian organics has grown at 16% pa. This growth in Australia has ramped up... |

Organic farming actors need to handle more complex innovation processes to develop locally adapted and globally relevant solutions for challenges such as agricultural-biodiversity and relationship between farmers and producers. For a coordinating management of such innovation processes, management tools that exceed classical innovation management techniques, are required if sustainable solutions are to be achieved. Developing relevant knowledge requires a transdisciplinary approach to bridge the gap between science and practice. This paper presents our process and the resulting concept of the transdisciplinary innovation group ginkoo for one of two case studies. It aims at developing a research concept that integrates the practical context such that ground... |
