Soil fertility comparison among organic and conventional managed citrus orchards in Sicily. Organic Eprints
Stefano, Dr. Canali; Alessandra, Dr. Trinchera; Emanuela, Dr. Di Bartolomeo; Luigi, Dr. Nisini; Anna, Dr. Benedetti; Francesco, Dr. Intrigliolo.
In recents years, organic farming is expanding in Southern Italy and in the Mediterranean area, due to interest of consumers and EU agricultural policies. Evaluation of organic farming system introduction on soil quality and fertility status should be taken into account in order to define medium-long term environmental and agricultural strategies, on both locol and national scale. Soil physical, chemical and biological parameters represent effective tools to evaluate soil quality and changes in soil fertility status, as a consequence of different agronomic management (i.e. organic vs coventional). The aim of this work was to compare soil fertility of conventional and organic managed citrus Orchards, using specific soil system descriptors. The research was...

Simulating soil N2O and CO2 emissions from arable cropping systems using FASSET and MOBILE-DNDC Organic Eprints
Chirinda, N.; Kracher, D.; Porter, J.R.; Olesen, J.E.; Petersen, B.M.; Doltra, J.; Kiese, R.; Butterbach-Bahl, K..
Modelling of soil emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) is complicated by complex interactions between processes and factors influencing their production, consumption and transport. In this study N2O emissions and heterotrophic CO2 respiration were simulated from soils under winter wheat grown in three different organic and one inorganic fertilizer-based cropping system using two different models, i.e., MoBiLE-DNDC and FASSET. The two models were generally capable of simulating most seasonal trends of measured soil heterotrophic CO2 respiration and N2O emissions. Annual soil heterotrophic CO2 respiration was underestimated by both models in all systems (about 10−30% by FASSET and 10−40% by MoBiLE-DNDC). Both models overestimated annual...

Deep roots of Brassica oleracea have high uptake of 15N-nitrate to 2 meters soil depth Organic Eprints
Kristensen, H.L.; Thorup-Kristensen, K..
• Deep roots may be important for uptake of NO3- by annual crops. A field experiment with the deep rooted crop curly kale (Brassica oleracea L. convar. acephala (DC.) Alef. var. sabellica L.) was performed to investigate root distribution and N uptake in deep soil layers. • Root distribution was investigated by use of minirhizotrons and root extractions to 2.4 m depth. The capacity for crop N uptake was studied by deep 15NO3- placement followed by analysis of plant 15N content after 3-30 days. • The atom percent 15N excess (APE) of plant samples was of similar size after uptake of 15N placed at depths in the range of 0.4-2 m. Root colonisation and start of 15N uptake were synchronized in 2.4 m depth. • The deep roots had higher inflow of 15N compared...

Phosphorus availability on many organically managed farms in Europe Organic Eprints
Cooper, Julia; Reed, Eleanor Y.; Hörtenhuber, Stefan Josef; Lindenthal, Thomas; Løes, Anne-Kristin; Mäder, Paul; Magid, Jakob; Oberson, Astrid; Kolbe, Hartmut; Möller, Kurt.
Maintaining sufficient soil phosphorus (P) levels for non-limiting crop growth is challenging in organic systems since off-farm inputs of P are restricted. This study assessed the status of P on organic farms in Europe using soil test results for extractable P. Data was obtained from published literature, unpublished theses, and various national and regional databases of soil test values. Most of the data (15,506 observations) came from field scale soil tests, but in some cases (1272 observations) values had been averaged across a farm. Farm scale and field scale data were analysed separately and the impact of farm type (arable, dairy, grassland, horticulture, mixed, poultry, unknown) was assessed. Soil test results were assigned to P classes from very low...

Organically grown grassclover in nature areas to remove soil phosphate for development of specious rich grasslands Organic Eprints
Timmermans, B.G.H.; Eekeren, N. van.
Worldwide the current reserves of phosphate rock are being exhausted. In The Netherlands many former agricultural soils have been enriched by large quantities of phosphorus as a result of fertilization. It is thought that this phosphorus prevents development of target-nature types. Nature organizations currently seek ways to remove it. We tested grassclover, organically managed by local farmers, as a tool to extract excessive soilphosphate from nature areas and reimport it into the mineral cycle agricultural farms. In a small scale experiment we have shown that grassclover with potassium fertilization can remove more than twice the amount of soil phosphate compared to mowing alone. We tested the methodology on 60 ha of grasslands in nature areas and...

Transport and reduction of nitrate in clayey till underneath forest and arable land. Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, P.R.; Urup, J.; Helstrup, T.; Jensen, M.B.; Eiland, F.; Vinther, F.P..
Transport and reduction of nitrate in a typically macroporous clayey till were examined at variable flow rate and nitrate flux. The experiments were carried out using saturated, large diameter (0.5 m), undisturbed soil columns (LUC), from a forest and nearby agricultural sites. Transport of nitrate was controlled by flow along the macropores (fractures and biopores) in the columns. Nitrate reduction (denitrification) determined under active flow mainly followed first order reactions with half-lives (t1/2) increasing with depth (1.5–3.5 m) from 7 to 35 days at the forest site and 1–7 h at the agricultural site. Nitrate reduction was likely due to microbial degradation of accumulated organic matter coupled with successive consumption of O2 and NO3− in the...

Nitrogen and sulphur management: challenges for organic sources in temperate agricultural systems Organic Eprints
McNiel, A.M.; Eriksen, J.; Bergström, L.; Smith, K.S.; Marstorp, H.; Kirschmann, H.; Nilsson, I..
A current global trend towards intensification or specialization of agricultural enterprises has been accompanied by increasing public awareness of associated environmental consequences. Air and water pollution from losses of nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S), are a major concern. Governments have initiated extensive regulatory frameworks, including various land use policies, in an attempt to control or reduce the losses. This paper presents an overview of critical input and loss processes affecting N and S for temperate climates, and provides some background to the discussion in subsequent papers evaluating specific farming systems. Management effects on potential gaseous and leaching losses, the lack of synchrony between supply of nutrients...

Slagtesvin på friland kræver optimeret driftsledelse for at mindske miljøbelastningen Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Hermansen, J.E..

Comparison of effect of zinc-enriched pod of Phaseolus vulgaris and inner rice husk composts with zinc sulphate and zinc 14% chelate on zinc availability in maize plant in a calcareous soil Organic Eprints
Rasouli, Mrs. Shabnam; Azizi, Prof. Pirouz; Forghani, Dr. Akbar; Asghar Zade, Dr. Ahmad.
Mixtures of Zn salts and organic matter have been used successfully in controlling zinc deficiency in various crops. The aim of the present study was to optimize the effectiveness, on zinc availability in maize, of natural organic substances by enriching them with zinc sulfate. For this purpose pod of Phaseolus vulgaris and inner rice husk, as abundant organic wastes in the north of Iran, were incubated with increasing quantities of zinc sulphate. The effect of these zinc-enriched composts, zinc sulphate, and zinc 14% chelate on zinc availability in maize in a calcareous soil was studied in a greenhouse experiment. DTPA-extractable zinc of the soil, total zinc concentration, and chlorophyll of plant leaves were measured. Soil applications of all...

Müller, Torsten; Riehle, Judith; Schlegel, Isabel; Li, Zhifang; von Schenck zu Schweinsberg - Mickan, Mario; Sabahi, Hossein; Schulz, Rudolf.
The potential of different plant based organic fertilisers (PBOF) to substitute animal based organic fertilisers (ABOF) in organic vegetable production were investigated in incubation, pot and field experiments. PBOFs have the potential to replace ABOFs. Particularly legume seed meals show fast net N-release even at low soil temperatures. Considerable differences in nitrate contents of vegetables can be found between the different fertilisers although fresh matter and N yields are nearly identical.

Stikstofvoorziening uit maaimeststoffen; bedrijfsontwerp. Organic Eprints
van der Burgt, Geert-Jan.
Organic agriculture as system approach gains strength if it can produce its own nitrogen, more than what is now realized. This could be done by increased nitrogen fixation on both cattle farms and arable farms, combined with an increased nitrogen use efficiency. Because of these and other reasons, arable farmers can decide to reduce or stop the purchase of manure. Instead of this, cut-and-carry fertilizers could be used. Cut-and-carry fertilizers are alfalfa and grassclover, not sold but used on the farm as fertilizer. This text reports on the design of an arable farm based on the use of alfalfa and grassclover as cut-and-carry fertilizer. This causes a shortage in the P-balance, which is compensated by the purchase of local available compost. The design...

Simulating leaching losses following incorporation of grass and grass-clover leys Organic Eprints
Berntsen, Jørgen; Petersen, B.M.; Pedersen, A.; Jensen, L.S..
Dynamic simulation models can be useful tools for predicting the residual effect of leys, but only if they have been calibrated and validated appropriately for this particular situation. The BIOMOD project has aimed at expanding, calibrating and validating two Danish dynamic simulation models, namely FASSET and Daisy, for a range of crop rotational situations occurring in organic farming. Here we report on the calibration results for an extensive experiment with residual effect and nitrate leaching following grass-clover leys.

Soil biota in grassland, its ecosystem services and the impact of management Organic Eprints
van Eekeren, N.; Murray, P.J.; Smeding, F.W..
In the search for sustainable grassland systems, self-regulating processes in the soil become increasingly important. Soil biota play an important role in these processes and in the provision of various ecosystem services. For grassland systems important ecosystem services are supply of nutrients, soil structure maintenance and water retention. For developing and optimising sustainable grassland systems, insight is needed into the mechanisms by which soil biota are influenced by management and what it means for the functioning of the soil-plant system. Interactions between soil and plants can be represented by a cyclic conceptual framework including plant/roots, soil biota and soil properties. The challenge for sustainable grassland is to allow this cycle...

Timmermans, B.G.H.; Sukkel, Wijnand; Bokhorst, J.G..
