| The main objective of the inoVagri research project is to reach a better understanding of non-technical innovation in Swiss Agriculture. For this purpose a diversified case study was carried out. It enabled the analysis of innovative activities such as new organisational forms, new marketing models, vertical integration of the value-added chain and new forms of cooperation. SWOT analysis and 'grounded theory' were used as survey instruments. The study shows that the activities described above are typical process innovations, and that they were applied by the farms for the first time. | The objective of this paper is to analyse the matrix of technological capabilities of the sugar cane industry in Paraná State, showing your characteristic in the ambits of the investments, operation/production, innovation and relationships with the economy. The results of the matrix of technological capabilities show that the fact of not existing great concentrations for technological capabilities, for the advanced level, common in sugar cane industry, it is still derived of the secular subvencionist paradigm that reigned in the section until the nineties. | This paper provides a formal model of technology choice by a single region. Case studies have indicated that the technology acquired by LDCs often seem unsuitable, although the criteria for suitability are often unclear. The reasons which are presented for inappropriateness of the selection often rely more on political arguments then economic ones, or treat the recipient country as a passive actor in the whole process. | Recent studies have shown that agricultural research can have high payoffs in Africa, but impact depends on how well technology fits with evolving needs and capacity in the agricultural sector and the rest of the economy. Structural adjustment policies (e.g., market liberalization, currency devaluation) and political change are transforming user demands for new technology and the economic environment in which technology must perform. The challenge is how to design agricultural research as a strategic input to promote broad-based economic growth, structural transformation, and food security in the increasingly market-driven, but fragile, economies of Africa. |

| Agricultural biotechnology has been advancing very rapidly, and while it presents many promises, it also poses as many questions. Many dimensions to agricultural biotechnology need to be considered to adequately inform public policy. Policy is made more difficult by the fact that agricultural biotechnology encompasses many policy issues addressed in very different ways. We have identified several key areas agricultural research policy, industry structure, production and marketing, consumer issues, and future world food demand where agricultural biotechnology is dramatically affecting the public policy agenda. This report focuses on the economic aspects of these issues and addresses some current and timely issues as well as longer term issues. |

| The rapidity of change has left scant opportunity for investigation of the consequences of biotechnology adoption on long-term ecosystem or economic system functioning. Economic theory suggests that, if the "Biotechnology Revolution" is left to market forces alone,there will be neglected public goods. Theory and limited empirical evidence suggests that there are significant incentives for private firms to discount and neglect certain environmental impacts and to develop products that meet only the needs of those able and willing to pay.
