Non-technical Innovations in Swiss Agriculture AgEcon
Buser, Christian.
The main objective of the inoVagri research project is to reach a better understanding of non-technical innovation in Swiss Agriculture. For this purpose a diversified case study was carried out. It enabled the analysis of innovative activities such as new organisational forms, new marketing models, vertical integration of the value-added chain and new forms of cooperation. SWOT analysis and 'grounded theory' were used as survey instruments. The study shows that the activities described above are typical process innovations, and that they were applied by the farms for the first time. Therefore the use of the innovations involved uncertainties in planning, lack of experience and unknown risks. The desired result of the innovation process is the realisation...

Integrating Small Scale Farmers into Bread Wheat Marketing Chain through Contract Farming in Ethiopia AgEcon
Getaneh, Wubalem; Bekabil, Fufa.
The treatment effect censored regression model results of this study showed that educational level, value of agricultural equipment and number of oxen owned affected the participation decisions of the farmers in bread wheat contract farming significantly. The most important factors that determine gross margin obtained from bread wheat production were contract farming experience, the number of oxen owned and participation in contract farming. However, technical efficiency differences and management practices followed were not the reasons for differences in gross margin between the participant and non-participant farmers.

Uma análise da agroindústria canavieira do Paraná à guisa da matriz de capacidades tecnológicas AgEcon
Souza, Elvanio Costa de; Shikida, Pery Francisco Assis; Martins, Jefferson Paulo.
The objective of this paper is to analyse the matrix of technological capabilities of the sugar cane industry in Paraná State, showing your characteristic in the ambits of the investments, operation/production, innovation and relationships with the economy. The results of the matrix of technological capabilities show that the fact of not existing great concentrations for technological capabilities, for the advanced level, common in sugar cane industry, it is still derived of the secular subvencionist paradigm that reigned in the section until the nineties. However, the concern with the sectorial survival, mainly in the current deregulation ambient, it is also evidenced in several ambits of the technological capabilities portrayed by some sugar cane mills...

UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION THROUGH SYSTEM DYNAMICS MODELING: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Fisher, Donna K.; Norvell, Jonathan; Sonka, Steven T.; Nelson, Mark J..
This work demonstrates the utility of sophisticated simulation tools in aiding agribusiness managers' decision making. The system dynamics model developed here provides insight into the use of such models to evaluate potential adoption rates and diffusion patterns of yield mapping and monitoring technologies. The model allows for comparative analyses of the possible effects of different profit assumptions on adoption and diffusion.

Technology Selection and Appropriate Technology AgEcon
Englander, A. Steven.
This paper provides a formal model of technology choice by a single region. Case studies have indicated that the technology acquired by LDCs often seem unsuitable, although the criteria for suitability are often unclear. The reasons which are presented for inappropriateness of the selection often rely more on political arguments then economic ones, or treat the recipient country as a passive actor in the whole process. Can a technology actively selected by a recipient country ever by inappropriate, assuming factor cost ratios represent true relative values? A model presented by Evenson and Bingswanger (1978) indicates that a technology developed in one economic or physical environment may be 'appropriate' to a second, very different environment if the...

Zhang, Xia; Zhao, Deyi; Li, Guoqiang.
Based on apprehending the conception of intensive use of woodland, 12 indices are selected from the aspects of economy, society, ecology and so on according to the principles of scientific systematization, collectible index and system inner linkage. A scientific evaluation index system for woodland intensive use is constructed. Range Standardization Method is adopted in order to eliminate the differences among indices; index weight is calculated by the objective variation coefficient weight method. Physio geographic condition, woodland area and forest resource of Wenhe Operating Zone in Yakeshi City, China are introduced. According to the 2004-2008 relevant statistical data, intensive use level of Wenhe Operating Zone is evaluated. Result shows that the...

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION AND THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: FIRM AND HOST COUNTRY IMPACTS AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Ramos, Gabriel; Steiger, Carlos.
The protection of intellectual property rights has been a contentious issue over the last 20 years. Industrialized nations have moved to knowledge-based economies and simultaneously trade barriers have fallen, making intellectual property vulnerable. Adding to this vulnerability are conflicting international institutional environments, belief systems, and economic realities. The debate over IPR protection has become a significant global trade issue pitting the net- technology producing North against the net-technology consuming South. The North maintains a comprehensive IPR institutional environment and actively employs enforcement mechanisms. The South on the other hand, is more conflicted. While in the last ten years many Southern countries have...

A Strategic Approach to Agricultural Research Program Planning in Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Boughton, Duncan; Crawford, Eric W.; Howard, Julie A.; Oehmke, James F.; Shaffer, James D.; Staatz, John M..
Recent studies have shown that agricultural research can have high payoffs in Africa, but impact depends on how well technology fits with evolving needs and capacity in the agricultural sector and the rest of the economy. Structural adjustment policies (e.g., market liberalization, currency devaluation) and political change are transforming user demands for new technology and the economic environment in which technology must perform. The challenge is how to design agricultural research as a strategic input to promote broad-based economic growth, structural transformation, and food security in the increasingly market-driven, but fragile, economies of Africa.

Measuring the Contribution of Genetic Characteristics as an Indicator of Innovation: The Case of Corn in the USA, 1990-2009 AgEcon
Nolan, Elizabeth; Santos, Paulo.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regimes for plant breeding are generally justified on the basis that they encourage innovation. Introduction of IPR regimes for plant varieties in the United States has led to increased concentration, but it is less clear whether IPRs have promoted useful innovation, as measured by productivity of available corn hybrids. There are difficulties in finding a satisfactory measure of innovation in plant breeding, and in this paper we propose a procedure. Results from the annual corn hybrid trials conducted by 11 US universities over the 20 years from 1990 to 2009, at 365 separate locations in the 11 states, have been collated. This set of unbalanced panel data for grain corn hybrid trials has been used in a fixed effects...

ECONOMIC ISSUES IN AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY AgEcon
Shoemaker, Robbin A.; Harwood, Joy L.; Day-Rubenstein, Kelly A.; Dunahay, Terry; Heisey, Paul W.; Hoffman, Linwood A.; Klotz-Ingram, Cassandra; Lin, William W.; Mitchell, Lorraine; McBride, William D.; Fernandez-Cornejo, Jorge.
Agricultural biotechnology has been advancing very rapidly, and while it presents many promises, it also poses as many questions. Many dimensions to agricultural biotechnology need to be considered to adequately inform public policy. Policy is made more difficult by the fact that agricultural biotechnology encompasses many policy issues addressed in very different ways. We have identified several key areas — agricultural research policy, industry structure, production and marketing, consumer issues, and future world food demand — where agricultural biotechnology is dramatically affecting the public policy agenda. This report focuses on the economic aspects of these issues and addresses some current and timely issues as well as longer term issues.

BRIDGING RESEARCH, POLICY, AND PRACTICE IN AFRICAN AGRICULTURE: Progress and problems in confronting hunger and poverty AgEcon
Omamo, Steven Were.
Policy research on African agriculture is long on prescriptions for what needs to be done to spur agricultural growth but short on how such prescriptions might be implemented in practice. What explains this state of affairs? What might be done to correct it, and, most important, how? This paper addresses these questions via a comprehensive review and assessment of the literature on the role and impact of research in policy processes. Six major schools of thought are identified: the rational model; pragmatism under bounded rationality; innovation diffusion; knowledge management; impact assessment; and evidence-based-practice. The rational model—with its underlying metaphor of a “policy cycle” comprising problem definition and agenda setting, formal decision...

TRANSGENIC CROPS AND THE ENVIRONMENT: MISSING MARKETS AND PUBLIC ROLE AgEcon
Batie, Sandra S.; Ervin, David E..
The rapidity of change has left scant opportunity for investigation of the consequences of biotechnology adoption on long-term ecosystem or economic system functioning. Economic theory suggests that, if the "Biotechnology Revolution" is left to market forces alone, there will be neglected public goods. Theory and limited empirical evidence suggests that there are significant incentives for private firms to discount and neglect certain environmental impacts and to develop products that meet only the needs of those able and willing to pay. Negative distributional impacts on rural societies and economies will not normally enter the private calculus nor will the long-term problems of insect and plant resistance. Thus, there is a strong case for enhanced public...
