Revisão das espécies sul-americanas de Rhopalophora (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Napp,Dilma Solange.
Rhopalophora Audinet-Serville, 1834 is currently composed of 25 species with a distribution ranging from North to South America. Only nine of them were described from South America and have been recorded exclusively from this continent. The North and Central American species were revised by GIESBERT & CHEMSAK (1993); the South American species, on the other hand, still remain with their descriptions fragmented in different publications that date from 1824 to 1989.The purposes of this work are to redescribe the genus, to gather information on the South American species, to provide updated and standardized descriptions, illustrations, and an identification key, in order to complement that of GIESBERT & CHEMSAK (1993). The following species...

Braga cigarra comb. nov. for Philostomella cigarra (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cymothoidae) with a redescription of the species based on specimens from Galeocharax kneri, a freshwater fish of Minas Gerais State, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Thatcher,Vernon E.; Oliveira,Antonio A. N. de; Garcia,Adriana M..
Specimens of a cymothoid isopod from a freshwater fish of Minas Gerais State were studied. These were found to be morphologically comparable to Philostomella cigarra Szidat & Schubart, 1960, except for having multilaminate pleopods which is the distinguishing characteristic of the genus Braga Schiödte & Meinert, 1881. The first pleopod is bilaminate while the second is quadrilaminate. Pleopods three to five are trilaminate. It is herein proposed that the generic name Philostomella Szidat & Schubart, 1960, should be considered invalid and that the species P. cigarra should be transferred to Braga. Braga now contains eight species, including B. cigarra comb. nov., all from South American freshwater fishes. The principal difference...

Morphometric and morphological variation in South American populations of Myotis albescens (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Moratelli,Ricardo; Oliveira,João Alves de.
Myotis albescens (É. Geoffroy, 1806) occurs from Mexico to Uruguay and Argentina. Despite a large number of specimens in collections, its variability in South America has been underestimated, potentially leading to errors in identification. In order to clarify the taxonomic limits of M. albescens and to evaluate previous hypotheses of geographic variation in size we analyzed the type material and studied the variability in South American samples using multivariate exploratory and confirmatory procedures, as well as frequency analyses of discrete morphological data. The presence of a fringe of hairs along the trailing edge of the uropatagium, the long and silky pelage with frosted appearance on the dorsum, ear 9 to 14 mm long, broad interorbital and...

New records of Parvalona parva (Crustacea: Anomopoda: Chydoridae) from Brazil, with first description of the male Rev. Bras. Zool.
Elmoor-Loureiro,Lourdes M.A.; Santos-Wisniewski,Maria J. dos; Rocha,Odete.
The Neotropical species Parvalona parva (Daday, 1905) was previously reported only from two localities (Northern Argentina and Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil). In the present paper, seven new records of P. parva from Brazil are presented. The specimens were collected from small waterbodies located in the Federal District and the states of São Paulo, Pará, and Pernambuco. These new records suggest that this species is not as rare as previously believed. The male, sexual female, and the lateral head pores of parthenogenetic females are described and illustrated for the first time.

Association between deep-water scale-worms (Annelida: Polynoidae) and black corals (Cnidaria: Antipatharia) in the Southwestern Atlantic Rev. Bras. Zool.
De Assis,José Eriberto; Souza,José Roberto B. de; Lima,Manuela M. de; Lima,Gislaine V. de; Cordeiro,Ralf T.S.; Pérez,Carlos D..
ABSTRACT Polynoid scale-worms have been found living as commensals with deep-water antipatharians (commonly known as black corals) in the Potiguar Basin, off Rio Grande do Norte State, Northeastern Brazil. In this paper two polychaete species and four black corals species are redescribed. Benhamipolynoe cf. antipathicola and Parahololepidella cf. greeffi, and the black coral Stylopathes adinocrada Opresko, 2006 are recorded for the Southwestern Atlantic. Benhamipolynoe cf. antipathicola was first described from off New Zealand and the Malay Archipelago, as symbiont with the black coral Stylopathes tenuispina (Silberfeld, 1909). It was later reported for the North Atlantic, off Florida, associated with Stylopathes columnaris (Duchassaing, 1870). In our...

A new genus and species of Cicadellini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest Rev. Bras. Zool.
Mejdalani,Gabriel; Cavichioli,Rodney Ramiro.
The Neotropical sharpshooter Parasubrasaca felixi, gen. nov., sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the Atlantic Rainforest of Southeastern Brazil (state of Espírito Santo). The new genus can be distinguished from other members of the Cicadellini by several morphological features, including a unique modification of the basal portion of the aedeagus, which bears a conspicuous, ventrally directed projection that articulates with the connective. The projection bears a pair of strong spines directed posteriorly. In addition to the external morphology, color pattern, and male genitalia, the female genitalia of the new taxon are also described in detail. A discussion comparing the new genus with similar Neotropical taxa (Subrasaca Young, 1977, Soosiulus...

Redescription of Temnocephala iheringi (Platyhelminthes: Temnocephalida) based on specimens from Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca: Ampullariidae) of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: the possible type host and type locality Rev. Bras. Zool.
Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,José F. R.; Amato,Suzana B..
The original description of Temnocephala iheringi Haswell, 1893 was based on specimens collected by Hermann von Ihering from undetermined ampullariid apple snails, which at that time were identified as Ampullaria sp., and sent to William H. Haswell, with the type locality simply indicated as Brazil. The type specimens studied by Haswell were not found in the scientific collections of Brazil, Europe or Australia, and should be considered lost. In 1941, Pereira & Cuocolo collected specimens from apple snails, identified as Pomacea lineata (Spix in Wagner, 1827), at two localities (Guaicurús and Salobra) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, central Brazil. These specimens could not be located either and should, thus, be considered lost as well. Pomacea...

Does the widely distributed rodent Calomys tener (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) constitute a single evolutionary unit? Rev. Bras. Zool.
González-Ittig,Raul E.; Kandel,Narayan P.; Bonvicino,Cibele R.; Salazar-Bravo,Jorge.
ABSTRACT The nominal species Calomys tener (Winge, 1887) ranges broadly in open lands of the Caatinga, Cerrado, Pantanal and Mata Atlântica of Brazil, and was recently reported from the Pampas of southern Brazil, and in the Selva Paranaense of eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. This rodent can be infected with the pathogenic Araraquara hantavirus in Brazil. Given that most epidemiological studies have not taken into account updated taxonomic findings of their rodent hosts, in this study, we obtained sequence data of the Cyt-b and COI genes of specimens of C. tener from 22 different geographical localities from throughout the currently known distribution of the species (including individuals from Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil) to test...

Bofedales: high altitude peatlands of the central Andes RChHN
SQUEO,FRANCISCO A; WARNER,BARRY G; ARAVENA,RAMÓN; ESPINOZA,DIANA.
There is an exceptional group of alpine peatlands in the world situated in the arid grasslands of the central Andes. The peatlands in northern Chile occur in the most arid part of their range. Members of the Juncaceae are the primary peat-forming plant species. Fresh and mildly saline groundwaters originate from glaciers, snowmelt and rain are the water sources for the northern Chile peatlands. Paleoecological investigations suggest that some peatlands are recent features of the landscape having developed within the last three thousand years or less. These peatlands are unique, extremely fragile water features sensitive to climate changes and human disturbances such as regional mining activity. Much more work is required to develop scientifically based...

The Chacoan bat fauna identity: Patterns of distributional congruence and conservation implications RChHN
SANDOVAL,M. LEONOR; BARQUEZ,RUBÉN M.
The aim of this paper is to characterize the Chaco thorn-scrub savanna as a unit, biologically defined by means of its identification as a regional pattern of distributional congruence, through the evaluation of the utility of bat assemblages as biogeographical indicators of the Chaco at regional scale, and to then evaluate this characterization in terms of the conservation value of this habitat. We have considered the whole territory of Paraguay and Bolivia, and the northern of Argentina; that is the entire Chaco biogeographical province, and part of the surrounding biogeographical provinces. We conducted an exhaustive search and constructed a database consisting in 9509 geo-referenced records showing that the bat fauna of the Chaco is richer than...

Body mass variation in the Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi) RChHN
LUCHERINI,MAURO; MANFREDI,CLAUDIA; LUENGOS,ESTELA; DIAS MAZIM,FÁBIO; SOLER,LUCÍA; CASANAVE,EMMA B..
We report new data on the intersexual and geographical variation in body mass of the Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi d'Orbigny and Gervais 1844), a little known small cat from South America, and combine them with the existing information to compare alternative hypotheses for variation in body mass. Most data on the body mass of O. geoffroyi have been obtained from previous research on this felid in four study areas of southern Brazil and central and southern Argentina. These data were added to those reported for other three additional locations. Our results set the body mass of O. geoffroyi to 4.26 ± 1.03 kg (mean ± SD, n = 56). We also show that males generally are heavier than females throughout most of this species' distributional range. Body mass...

First record of the ant genus Oxyepoecus (Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Solenopsidini) in Chile, with remarks on its geographical range Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Cuezzo,Fabiana.
The ant genus Oxyepoecus (Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Solenopsidini) Santschi, 1926 has 16 species recognized as valid. Three of these species: O. inquilinus (Kusnezov, 1952), O. bruchi Santschi, 1926 and O. daguerrei (Santschi, 1933) are considered as vulnerable (VuD2) and included in the Red List of threatened species. The aim of this paper is to record one of these species: O. inquilinus in Chile for the first time, adding a new locality to be considered as the southernmost limit of distribution for this relatively rarely collected ant genus.

Taxonomy and cladistics of the group of genera related to Cyrtomon Schoenherr (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Naupactini) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Lanteri,Analía A.; Del Rio,M. Guadalupe.
In this contribution we update taxonomic and geographical information on five genera of weevils (Curculionidae: Entiminae: Naupactini) distributed in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. As a result of a cladistic analysis based on 48 morphological characters and 18 terminal species (two outgroups and 16 species of the ingroup) we recover a single most parsimonious tree with two main subgroups, one including Mendozella Hustache as a sister group of Cyrtomon Schoenherr, and the other including Lamprocyphopsis Lanteri, Priocyphopsis Lanteri and Priocyphus Hustache. In this tree Cyrtomon hirsutus (Hustache) is the sister species of Mendozella curvispinis (Hustache), consequently we establish the new combination Mendozella hirsuta (Hustache), and...
