Shifting cultivation, known as ‘jhum’ in Northeast India is widely distributed upland slash and burn agricultural system. Efforts to address jhum remained challenging tasks, more so due to its shortening cycle but continued livelihoods dependency for a large population of upland communities. With organic foods gaining popularity, harmonizing jhum with Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) organic standards may provide enhanced opportunities for improved livelihoods and environmental security in Northeast India. The paper explores these opportunities and focuses on the features and characteristics of jhum that would require in meeting the PGS organic standards. |

Organic farming is increasingly recognised, by consumers, farmers, environmentalists and policy-makers, as one of a number of possible models for environmental, social and financial sustainability in agriculture. It has taken a long time to get this far. Organic farming’s roots can be traced back more than 100 years. Certified organic production dates back 25-30 years (70 years in the case of Demeter-certified bio-dynamic production). Yet little more than one percent of agriculture in Europe is organic, and much less than that in other parts of the world. Many have argued that organic farming will never capture the hearts and minds of the majority of farmers, because it is too idealistic and restrictive. What is needed, they argue, is an intermediate... |

In the increasing organic market in Europe, more and more of the organic food is sold via big retail chains. This development implies that an increasing trade with organic food takes place over long distances and across borders in Europe. Therefore, the control of organic products through the food chain “from farm to fork” has become increasingly important, because the organic inspection and certification system is the only guarantee to the consumer that the organic food products they buy really are organic. At the European level quite a lot of research has been done on various aspects of organic farming and marketing of organic food products, but little is known about the organic certification system at EU level as regards efficiency, costs and size of... |

Values are at the centre of organic farming. The paper examines ethical concerns that are important to consumers, producers and other stakeholders in relation to organic farming practice and how this relates to current standards and the four IFOAM principles of health, ecology, fairness and care. Most concerns can be categorised under four headings but important issues are cross cutting. Currently, standards cover, both directly and indirectly, only a part of ethical values associated with organic food and agriculture but many producers aim to deliver on a broader range. |

Slovenia lies between Croatia (south), Austria (north), Hungary (east) and Italy on the west part. It has approximately 2.000.000 million inhabitants with 20.273 km2 surface area. Slovenia is predominately mountain country. Slovenian mountain and hilly regions are spread out over more than 72,3% of that nation’s total area (1.467.240 hectares). The hilly and mountain regions fall under LFA (less favored) areas which represent 86,3% (1.750.920 hectares) of all nation’s total area. The 74,2% (approximately 449.000 hectares) of agricultural land in use are under LFA. Forests and the forest landscape are the most recognisable spatial elements in Slovenia, which also represent a large market opportunity and a comparable advantage for Slovenia. With forests... |

Since December 2011, ETO and FiBL are jointly implementing the German-Turkish Bilateral Cooperation - Organic Agriculture. The overall aim of this project is to effectively and efficiently ensure the quality of Turkish organic food produced for the European market. Information from a representative sample of selected private operators of the organic supply chains together with official data from competent authorities about unwanted residues detected in organic products from Turkey have been determined as a major indicator for the extent of reaching the project aim. For this reason, a survey was conducted in late 2013 among German and Turkish trading companies, control bodies and the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE). The study concluded that... |

Global Development of Organic Agriculture: Challenges and Prospects Edited by N. Halberg, H. F. Alroe, M.T. Knudsen and E.S. Kristensen. CABI Publishing, Wallingford, UK. <www.cabi.org>. May 2006. 380 pages, £55, ISBN 1 84593 078 9. Global Development of Organic Agriculture is valuable for its both explicit and implicit championing of the diversity of organic agriculture systems - and in particular, its acknowledgment of the legitimacy and value of both certified and non-certified organics. In this, it serves as a useful foil to the fortress organics mentality that sees non-certified organics as some kind of impostor or threat to “the brand”. This book takes as a starting premise the legitimacy and value of both strands of organics, and proceeds... |

Gray mold, caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea, is one of the most common and serious diseases affecting strawberries. Different fungicides are used to manage this disease but can quickly lose their effectiveness and their ability to suppress the disease. Therefore, much attention is devoted to biological methods of control in recent years. Preparation PrestopMIX (Verdera Oy, Finland) is available in some European countries. It contains a biocontrol agent (BCA), isolate J1446 of the fungus Gliocladium catenulatum, active against grey mold. In the project Bicopoll, a project of European transnational research cooperation project CORE Organic II, we are checking for residues of BSA in bee products (honey, pollen) and following BCA distribution to... |

The objective of this report is to provide an up-to-date overview of the organic and inconversion land area, number of holdings, livestock and crop production in all EU member states plus the Czech Republic, Norway and Switzerland from 1993 to 1998. The report traces the growth and development of organic farming in general and as part of policy measures to support organic farming and updates the data presented in Foster and Lampkin (1999). This report is one of several aiming to assess ex post the impact of EU and other policy measures on organic farming as part of the project ”Effects of the CAP Reform and possible further developments on organic farming in the EU” (FAIR 3-CT96 1794). The general objective of the project is to provide an assessment of the... |
