Air drying of macauba fruits: maintaining oil quality for biodiesel production Agronomy
Silva, Gutierres Nelson; Grossi, José Antônio Saraiva; Carvalho, Marcela Silva; Kuki, Kacilda Naomi; Goulart, Samuel de Melo; Pimentel, Leonardo Duarte.
Macauba fruits are oil-rich drupes with high moisture content at harvest. This feature can affect the chemical properties of the oil and increase the costs of biodiesel production. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt postharvest strategies to ensure oil quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of drying macauba fruit on the quality of the pulp oil. Husked and dehusked fruits were dried at 60°C and then stored. At 0, 15, 45, 100, and 180 days after storage, fruit samples were retrieved, and the oil from the pulp was evaluated for physicochemical parameters. The removal of the husk from the fruits considerably reduced the drying time compared to that of the husked fruits. Drying prevented deterioration of the fruit even after 180 days of...

Effect of Chitosan Coating on Some Quality Properties of Thomson Orange during Storage (A case study in Iran) CIGR Journal
Taghinezhad, Ebrahim; Rasooli Sharabiani, Vali.
Most of the world's consumers have used the natural coatings instead of chemical coatings. In this research, some quality properties of Thomson orange were evaluated using Chitosan edible coating (at concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 2%) and chemical coating of fungicide (Ortho Phenyl Phenol) as compared to uncoated samples during storage for three months. Fruit were maintained in cold storage at 6 °C temperature and 85-90% relative humidity, then pH, total soluble solid (TSS) of orange juice and percentage of fruit weight loss were measured during storage every month. The results showed that weight loss of fruit with 2% chitosan coating was lower than other treatments. Also this treatment had high resistance against fungal attacks due to high values of pH, so...

Case study about field trial responses of the zero energy storage system CIGR Journal
Islam, M. P.; Morimoto, T.; Hatou, K.; Hassan, L.; Awal, M. A.; Hossain, S. T..
A low cost ‘Zero Energy Cool Chamber (ZECC)’ has been developed for storing fruits and vegetables by usingpassive evaporative mechanism. This paper presents the results of a survey on the farmer’s opinion regarding the exploitationof zero energy storage system. This survey was conducted at Mymensingh district of Bangladesh from 2011 to 2012 and italso revealed that most of the farmers sell their produce to the middlemen just after the harvest. Lack of transportation facility, shortage of energy supply and lack of investment on storage, lower price of vegetables during the harvesting season, farmers in the rural areas often sell their products to the middleman or in the local market at low prices. They are not even able to get the return of invested money...

Radiometric density measurement for silage compaction in bunker silos CIGR Journal
Hoffmann, Thomas; Geyer, Sabine; Bittner, Jürgen; Kögler, Robert; Schima, Mirko.
Certain minimum densities should be targeted when storing silage in bunker silos.  However, farmers lack facilities to measure the actual density and then steer the compaction passes.  This study was aimed at developing a measuring device for onsite density measurement.  The basis of the measuring device was a source of caesium radiation with an activity of    37 MBq and a sodium iodide scintillation detector.  The measuring device used the backscattering method.  The source and detector were located in a measuring wheel that was connected with the tractor via the rear three-point linkage.  During measuring passes on bunker silos both the density increase in the case of several crossings and the elastic recovery of the material could be seen clearly.  In...
