Entwicklung eines Modells zur Generierung und Bewertung standort- und situationsangepasster Fruchtfolgen im Ökologischen Landbau [Development of a model for generation and evaluation of site- and situation-adapted crop rotations in organic agriculture] Organic Eprints
Bachinger, J.; Zander, P..

Studying learning and innovation networks – a conceptual and methodological framework Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
This paper outlines the main concepts and methodology that the SOLINSA project uses in its study of learning and innovation networks. This project aims to identify barriers to the development of Learning and Innovation Networks for sustainable agriculture (LINSA). In such networks, social learning processes take place, and knowledge about sustainable agriculture is co-produced by connecting between the different frames and social worlds of the stakeholders with the help of boundary objects. Studying such processes at the interface between different knowledge spheres of research, policy and practice requires a specific methodology. A transdisciplinary reflective learning methodology addresses the complex question of understanding learning and innovation....

Intervention in a third party smallholder group organic certification Organic Eprints
Borges de Brito, Paulo Roberto; Chagas de Carvalho, Yara Maria; Benedito Macedo, Arlei.
The present paper approaches the perspectives of certification for the organic family farmer agriculture, through alternative certification processes, the participatory certification, and the third party smallholder group certification. The main goal of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding about the potential of the alternative organic certification processes. To assess so far as the certification can be associated to a pedagogical process for the Paulista family farmers in which the possibility of strengthening the social control can lead to a bureaucratic process reduction in the Internal Control System – ICS. The specific goal is to verify if the APROVE’s small holder group certification proposed by the certifier AAOcert based on the...

From Project Management to Process Management - Effectively Organising Transdisciplinary Projects Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun.
In transdisciplinary projects, the roles of researchers change. In addition to being a source of knowledge, they are required to engage in knowledge exchange processes. This results in an alteration at project level: researchers need to creatively manage projects as group processes.

Observing the observers – uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of the article is to uncover the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explore how values are embedded in five research perspectives assessing organic food systems, 1) Food Science, 2) Discourse Analysis, 3) Phenomenology, 4) Neoclassical Welfare Economics and 5) Actor-Network Theory. The article shows that value has various meanings in different scientific perspectives, and that a strategy for including and balancing...

Konservierende Bodenbearbeitung im Ökolandbau - Analyse einer Verfahrenstechnik im Kontext der Bodenfruchtbarkeit Organic Eprints
Wilhelm, Birgit.

Focus groups of value concepts of producers: National Report Italy Organic Eprints
Roviglioni, Raffaella.
The Organic Revision project was funded by the EU with the aim of supporting the further development of the EU Regulation 2092/91 on organic production. As part of the project focus groups were run in five European countries on value concepts of organic producers and other stakeholders, during 2004-2005. The project aims to provide an overview of values held among organic stakeholders, and of similarities and differences among the various national and private organic standards. In Italy four focus groups were held, a pre-test with AIAB staff, a group of policy makers, a group of established organic producers and a group of newly converted producers. The following conclusions were reached: The general impression is that there are three main values or...

Development of organic farming in distant rural Māori communities in New Zealand through successful participatory approaches Organic Eprints
Kerckhoffs, Dr. L.H.J..
A research partnership was initiated between scientists of Crop and Food Research and rural Māori communities in the Tairawhiti region of New Zealand to help these communities with the transition from extensive agriculture to intensive organic horticulture. Within the project, growers are working together with agricultural scientists, extension specialists and social scientists using participatory approaches, what has proved to be a powerful tool for increasing the relevance and effectiveness of research for these communities. Progress towards original goals has been slower than expected, but mutual trust and developed relationships between the scientists and the community were recognised as the key factor in the project, and both groups were able to learn...

How to promote innovation and interdisciplinarity in organic food and farming research evaluation Organic Eprints
Blanc, Julien; Alföldi, Thomas; Bellon, Stéphane; Niggli, Urs.
The development of organic food and farming research calls for system-oriented, innovative, interdisciplinary approaches. The process of evaluating research proposals is a crucial step towards this objective. Based on the EU CORE Organic pilot call for joint transnational research projects, we analysed to what extent the evaluation criteria and procedures implemented address this issue. Feedback on the experience of the target groups involved in this call was gathered and discussed in relation to findings from the literature. Our results show that interdisciplinary and innovative aspects could be better addressed, and evaluation criteria more clearly defined and delimited. This entails reshaping the main criteria and developing more suitable evaluation...

Schneider, Monika; Amurrio, Patricia; Aparicio, James; Gômez, Isabel; Limachi, Miguel; Milz, Joachim; Schneidewind, Ulf; Seidel, Renate; Trujillo, German.
Cocoa, mainly produced by 5 to 6 millions of smallholder farmers, is considered as one of the most sustainable production system in the humid tropics. Little is known about the sustainability of different cocoa production systems. A long-term experiment is set up in Alto Beni at 400m above sea level with a humid winter dry climate, 1’540 mm annual rainfall. The trial assesses the sustainability of five cocoa (Theobroma cacao) production systems with the parameters of yield and yield stability, input-output efficiency of nutrients and energy, soil fertility, biodiversity, economic result, climate change mitigation and adaptation. The two-factorial experiment is arranged in an completely randomised block design; the five cocoa treatments, based on local and...

BRIDGING THE GAP - IMPACT MATRIX ANALYSIS AND COST-BENEFIT CALCULATIONS TO IMPROVE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES REGARDING HEALTH STATUS IN ORGANIC DAIRY FARMING Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert; Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne.
Animal health status in organic dairy farming does not in all respect meet consumers’ expectations. Improvements are crucial to support consumers’ confidence and their willingness to pay premium prices. Considering animal health as an emergent property of the whole farm system the presented project aims to increase the implementation of evidence based measures and to improve practice of health management. This will be achieved by a multidisciplinary and participatory approach to develop farm specific solutions regarding preventive measures and appropriate treatment strategies.

Participatory investigation of the management of weeds in organic production systems (CTE0201) Organic Eprints
Description The future uptake and success of organic systems will rely on being able to adapt and overcome production constraints that hamper the sector in an ever-demanding market. In terms of technical constraints to production, weeds have always featured as one of the primary issues concerning both farmers considering conversion and those already converted. Furthermore weed control has been highlighted as a research and development priority by the UKROFS board (1998) and by the Consultation of Organic Farming Research Priorities (2001). There remain a range of weed management challenges that need to be explored and resolved. For example control of ‘difficult’ weeds such as annual grasses and perennial weeds, and the integration of weed control measures...
