From September 2006 to April 2008 associations of organic food producers and traders in Germany organised 600 events for 13.000 farmers and entrepreneurs to improve the transfer of knowledge between science and practice. Besides communicating current research results, the project aimed at capturing the need for further scientific studies. Producers, processors and traders have a very high interest in further and profound research into the organic food business. Core questions are not only on soil fertility or the quality of food but also on specific aspects of plant protection, market development and welfare oriented animal husbandry.

Grain legume nitrogen fixation and balance model for use in practical organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Kolbe, Dr. Hartmut.
Measurements in the literature of grain yield, harvest index, N2 fixation, N content, N surplus, Nmin content of the soil, etc., were compiled. Correlation analyses were then carried out with Vicia faba L. and Pisum sativum L. data sets from conventional and organic field trials per-formed in Central European. Grain yield or N output, Nmin content before sowing, and the N harvest index proved to be the most effective driving variables for developing a calculation model for plant nitrogen fixation and the surplus amount. All the variables mentioned are listed in farmers’ plot card indices, with the exception of the N harvest index, an essential variable which is not detectible by the farmer. Therefore, the N harvest index was indirectly determined through...

Organic markets / consumers in Lithuania Organic Eprints
Rutkoviene, Vida; Abraityte, Gerda.
Abstract. Organic farming in Lithuania develops from the early 90 but up to the year 2000 the increase of number of organic farms and area under organic production was insignificant. In 2005 there were 1811 organic operators certified. The area of certified land was 69 430 ha, which is 2,7% of then total area of agricultural land in Lithuania. Action plan for de-velopment of Organic Agriculture in Lithuania fore-casts increase in number of organic farms and antici-pate that by 2006 the area under organic production will constitute 5% of the country farmland. Despite the growing production of organic foods the demand exceeds supply. Organic food is sold via as well su-permarkets (processed products) as direct sale (vegetables, fruit, potatoes). The aim of...

Trust and responsible management. The case of state controlled repacking Organic Eprints
Ritttenhofer, Iris.
The paper is concerned with a case of local management of eco certification. With outset in a case study, the paper explores the relation of eco certification to economy, society and culture. The paper emphasizes the multidimensional quality of local eco management of global organic agrifood systems. It takes a postmodern stance and discusses the case from the perspective of trust, responsible management, cosmopolitanization, the ‘transparent society’ and ‘green growth’ strategies. In the concluding section, the implications for the further development of a concept ‘responsible management’ are discussed and suggestions for future research are made. The paper draws on multidisciplinary research from management and business studies, intercultural and...

Simon, Karl-Heinz; Meier-Ploeger, Angelika; Vogtmann, Hardy.

Organic Soil Management: Impacts on Yields, Soil Quality and Economics Organic Eprints
Koopmans, C.J.; Zanen, M..
Understanding organic management practices is a key in developing sustainable organic farming systems. We report the results of four different organic fertilization strategies in a field trial on yields, soil quality and economic performance. We found highest yields and economic performance in two direct plant feeding strategies. One of these strategies, a newly developed strategy based on biowaste compost (GFT) and an additional fertilizer performed well in terms of yields but looks also very promising in terms of soil quality and biodiversity. The economic perspective of this strategy renders it promising in regions with little animal manures.

Ausdünnung von Elstar mit Schwefelkalk in Norddeutschland Organic Eprints
Clever, Michael.
Thinning trials with lime sulphur in comparison to other products were carried out for 4 years in an ‘Elstar orchard’ at the OVB Jork in Northern Germany. Beside the yield, the influence on fruit size, colour, russet-ting and return bloom of treated trees were observed. Mechanic thinning was too strong and had other negative effects. Thinning with potato meal and coconut soap had no effect. Organic oil (Telmion) reduced the yield between 0 and 20%. Lime sulphur reduced the yield 0 – 40% in comparison of the concentration and the number of applications. There were great fluctuations from year to year. In conclusion lime sulphur gives the best results, but the variation from year to year is not acceptable for a practical advising in the northern area of...

Zapf, Katja; Damme, Klaus.

Analysis of regulatory framework and standards applied to organic wine-making in Europe Organic Eprints
Jonis, Monique; Monnier, Marie Christine; Micheloni, Cristina; Schmid, Otto; Hoffman, Uwe.
Because wines (of grapes) were excluded from the scope of EC Regulation 2092/91 (annex 6, concerning processing organic food, does not apply to wine) concerning organic farming, up till now there is no legal definition for organic wines at European level, but only rules for organic grapes production. This project: ORWINE, is aiming to help the UE commission to develop a legislative framework for the transformation of organic grapes into organic wine. This would allow replacing the current definition “wine made from organically grown grapes” by “organic wines”. One of the first tasks of this project is a description of the regulatory framework applied to EU organic wine-making. Legal public and private standards for wine processing are taken in...

Netzwerke nachhaltiger Landwirtschaft im GVO-induzierten institutionellen Wandel Organic Eprints
Pick, Doris.
In many countries of the world regional actors and their networks seem to be concerned about genetically engineered plants, food, feed and seed. Especially regional actors involved in organic and natural food and farming business seem to lead the way in wanting to know more about the source of their food, what it contains and how it is produced. Sustainable producing Farmers want to protect their plants and produce from the influence of pollen drift from GM plants. Thus the Introduction of GM plants requires complex innovations in regularizing ecological, social and economic relationships and it induces various institutional changes even on local level. This paper gives an inside over institutional changes which occurred in selected study regions...

Development of an Environmental Management System for Organic Farms and its Introduction into Practice Organic Eprints
Huelsbergen, Kurt-Juergen; Kuestermann, Bjoern.
Increasing demands for documentation of farm activities as well as environment and quality assurance call for environment adapted management systems, also in organic farming. The model software REPRO is a tool for farm management and consultation. It is distinguished by a systemic depiction of farming systems and can be used in agricultural practice. The access to farm related data and site information is the basis for statements about matter cycles (C, N, P, K), humus budget, energy efficiency, erosion, soil structure and harmful soil compaction. Its application in rather differently structured farms under organic management discloses distinctly the relationships between the design of farming systems and their environmental effects. The possibility of...

Organic Eprints
Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Pedersen, Heidi Huus; Mejer, Helena.

Moschitz, Heidrun; Stolze, Matthias.
Organic farming has become a policy instrument of agriculture. Thus, the sector is required more and more to get politically active. This paper presents results from an analysis of organic farming institutions from 1997-2003 in eleven European countries and shows first results of a network analysis conducted to examine networks of organic farming policy. Institutions of the organic farming sector in new EU member states are still developing and their relation with mainstream farming institutions is characterised by competition whereas in EU15 countries and Switzerland this relation is more one of creative conflict. Countries with a high share of organic farming show signs of consolidation of their institutions. Policy networks of organic farming are bigger...

Ermittlung des „Biodiversitätswerts“ landwirtschaftlicher Betriebe im Rahmen einzelbetrieblicher Naturschutzberatungen Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Carstens, Jan-Marcus; Dierking, Uwe.
The feasibility of a new accelerated procedure to determine the “value of biodiversity” of agricultural holdings was tested on 80 farms in in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. The results of the practical application show, that the indicator system is a suitable method to be applied in the context of consultations on nature conservation on farms. Farm advisory also implied grants for conservation schemes. Implementation of measures on organic as well as on conventional farms was notably high.

Simulation of nitrate leaching from an organic dairy crop rotation with different manure types and loads Organic Eprints
Berntsen, Jørgen; Olesen, Jørgen; Petersen, Bjørn Molt; Eriksen, Jørgen.
Introduction Management of nitrogen in dairy systems is especially difficult due to the use of organic manures and the residual effects of the pasture. During grazing a considerable build-up of soil N is often observed. Ploughing of the grassland is therefore followed by a large mineralization that might exceed the demand of the subsequent crop. This might lead to large amount of nitrate being leached. In addition, rotations dependent on organic manures rather than mineral fertilizers are believed to have a higher risk of nitrate leaching. The study present results from simulations with the FASSET model (Berntsen et al., 2003) of nitrate leaching and crop growth in organic dairy systems with two types of manures at two different stocking levels....
