Umsetzung eines Tiergesundheitsplanes auf ökologisch wirtschaftenden Ferkelerzeugerbetrieben in Deutschland Organic Eprints
Werner, Christina; Dietze, Klaas; Sundrum, Albert.

Environmental impact of organic agriculture in temperate regions Organic Eprints
Lynch, D.H.; Halberg, N.; Bhatta, G.D..
Can organic agriculture elaborate a scientifically based, resource-efficien and agroecological approach to low-input farm management? This review examines the literature from temperate regions, with a particular emphasison Canadian and USstudies that relate to environmental and ecological impacts of organic agriculture with respect to (i )soil organic matter storage, (ii) soil quality/soil health, (iii) nutrient loading and risks of off-farm nutrient and agrochemical losses, (iv) biodiversity and (v) energy use and global warming potential. The context and implications of semi-arid conditions and low soil P levels, common to many organic farms in North America, and wide spread adoption of genetically engineered crops in conventional production, is also...

Gross sulphur mineralisation-immobilisation turnover in soil amended with plant residues Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J..
The rates of sulphur (S) released to and removed from the soil inorganic pool were estimated using the isotopic dilution technique. In an initial study fresh soil was mixed with combinations of two inorganic S levels (0 and 10 µg S g-1 soil) and three plant residues (wheat straw, perennial ryegrass and oilseed rape) and followed over 32 days of incubation. As 35S recovery was inadequate prior to day 2 and re-mineralisation of immobilised 35S occurred after day 8 thereby invalidating the method, estimates of gross S transformation rates should be based on data sampled between days 2 and 8. In the main experiment 16 plant residues with ranges in S contents of 0.08-0.81%, C/S ratios of 50-604 and lignin content of 0.9-10.8 were mixed with soil and...

Antifungal activity of phenolic compounds extracted from dried olive pomace Organic Eprints
Winkelhausen, Eleonora; Pospiech, Robert; Laufenberg, Günther.
The antifungal activity of phenolic compounds extracted from olive pomace against Alternaria solani, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium culmorum was investigated. Olive pomace, a by-product of olive oil production, was used as a source of phenolic compounds. The extracted phenolics were added to a medium to reach phenol concentration of 0,1 and 0,2 %(w/v) and tested for their antifungal activity against the three fungi. In addition, the fungi were cultivated in a medium containing a commercial fungicide in the concentration of 0,2 % (w/v). Both of the phenolic concentrations inhibited the growth of all three fungi with the higher being more effective. It resulted in a four-fold reduction of the mycelial growth rate of A. solani and F. culmorum. The present...

How effective are ‘Effective microorganisms® (EM)’? Results from a field study in temperate climate Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Scheid, Susanne; Widmer, Franco; Fließbach, Andreas; Oberholzer, Hans-Rudolf.
Effective microorganisms® (EM) is a microbial inoculant promoted to stimulate plant growth and soil fertility in agriculture. In our study we investigated the effects of EM on crop yields and soil microbial parameters in a 4-year field experiment under organic management (2003–2006) in Zurich, Switzerland. Treatments of the EM preparations (i) the spraying agent EMA, (ii) EMA with the EM enriched organic substrate Bokashi and (iii) EMA with Bokashi and farmyard manure were applied in each year. As controls to treatments (i)–(iii) the same treatments were included with sterilised EM preparations and a control without EM application. Crop yields in each year and the soil microbiological parameters soil respiration, microbial biomass (SIR, CFE), dehydrogenase...

Effect of deep-rooted plant species on 15Nitrogen uptake and herbage yield in temporary agricultural grasslands Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Eriksen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J..
Aims: Increase of plant diversity has been suggested to enhance grassland productivity and resource use efficiency. Most studies on agricultural grasslands have focused on functional diversity of mixtures comprising legumes and non-legumes, but there is little knowledge of plant nutrient acquisition from deep- and shallow-rooted grassland plant species. To investigate whether deep-rooted (chicory: Cichorium intybus L.; Lucerne: Medicago sativa L.) and shallow-rooted (perennial ryegrass: Lolium perenne L.; white clover: Trifolium repens L.) grassland plant species differ in herbage yield and depth dependent soil N-access, we investigated in the field if 1) a mixture comprising shallow- and deep-rooted grassland plant species has greater herbage yields than...

Comparison of interspecific competition and N use in pea–barley, faba bean–barley and lupin–barley intercrops grown at two temperate locations Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Joernsgaard, Bjarne; Jensen, Erik Steen.
Mixed intercropping of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with field pea (Pisum sativum L.), faba bean (Vicia faba var. minor L.) or narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) was compared to sole cropping in two field experiments at different locations, on a sandy loam soil and a sandy soil, in Denmark in 2001. Grain legumes were dominant in intercrops on the sandy loam soil, except for lupin, whereas barley was dominant in intercrops on the sandy soil site. Combined intercrop grain yields were comparable to grain yields of the respective sole cropped grain legume or sole cropped, fertilized barley on each soil site. On the sandy loam soil, pea-barley and faba bean-barley intercrops increased the proportion of plant N derived from N2 fixation in...

Zum Einfluss der Fütterung von Leindotterpresskuchen auf die Mast- und Schlachtleistung von Broilern aus ökologischer Mast Organic Eprints
Weißmann, F.; Paulsen, H.-M.; Fischer, K.; Matthäus, B.; Bauer, M.; Pscheidl, M.; Vogt-Kaute, W..

Bera, R; Seal, A; Datta, A; Saha, S; Dolui, AK; Chatterjee, AK; Barik, AK; De, GC; Mazumdar, D.
A new composting process known as Novcom composting method is being used for on-farm production of compost at West Jalinga Tea Estate (presently largest certified organic tea estate in Assam, India). The method has been developed by Dr. P. Das Biswas, an Indian Scientist who has been associated with organic research for the last decade. Novcom compost produced under this method is being used for soil management in the garden. The composting process enables production of mature compost within a period of 21 days. Quality of Novcom compost and its post soil application effectivity in terms of soil development were studied during the period 2006-7 to 2012-13. The samples were analyzed for physicochemical properties, nutrient content, ready nutrient supplying...

Earthworm populations in two low-input cereal farming systems Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk.
Earthworm populations in low-input integrated crop management (ICM: no application of insecticides, fungicides and growth regulators) and organic farming systems were compared. The study was performed as a 3-year field survey using a paired-farm approach in six different locations in northwestern Switzerland. Earthworms were extracted from soils sampled from 24 winter cereal fields using a combined method of extraction by mustard flour solution and handsorting. Earthworm communities differed between these farming systems. Over all sites, the mean biomass, abundance and species richness of earthworms found in the low-input ICM fields were significantly lower than in the organic fields. Adult earthworms in organic fields were 114% more abundant than in ICM...

Heterogeneity in Consumers' Perceptions and Demand for Local (Organic) Food Products Organic Eprints
Jensen, Jørgen Dejgård; Christensen, Tove; Denver, Sigrid; Ditlevsen, Kia; Lassen, Jesper; Teuber, Ramona.
“Local” is becoming increasingly important in consumers’ food purchase decisions. Perceived benefits of local foods are rather similar to those of organic products, including aspects of taste, food safety, animal welfare and reduced environmental impacts. Yet, only limited knowledge is available regarding different consumers’ conceptualization of local food. Our study addresses this research gap by investigating organic versus non-organic consumers’ perceptions of local foods and these perceptions’ association with purchasing behaviour. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining eight focus group interviews (52 participants in total) with a representative survey of 1515 Danish consumers. Focus group interviews revealed that Danish consumers mainly...

Organic livestock farming systems in the Massif Central: evolution (2008-2011) and analysis of the technical and economic performances and drivers Organic Eprints
Veysset, Patrick; Tauriac, R; Benoit, M.; Belvèze, J; Patout, O; Reuillon, J.-L.; Morin, E; Vallas, M.
The “Organic Farming Massif Central” hub and fifteen partners lead a program on sustainability and on the technical and economic operation of OF livestock systems in the Massif Central. This systemic and multi-year study (2008-2011) is based on data from a constant sample over four years, from 56 farms comprising four types of products: cattle and sheep, dairy and meat. Over 4 years, the technical and economic results are quite stable, and at a good level, but with great variability inter-farms. With lower labor productivity, but with a more diversified crop rotation, a good food self-sufficiency and good technical skills, the farms with the highest income get an income more than four times higher than the farms with the lowest income .

Tasmanian Organics, Leader or Lagger? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Tasmania, Australia's island state, appears to have a huge potential for organic agriculture. The state has a higher proportion of rural dwellers than other Australian states, it has a long tradition of successful agricultural pursuits dating from the earliest European settlement, it is the only state with its own own organic certifier, and geographically it is well placed to capitalise on its clean and green image. Statistics reporting organic farms per capita for Tasmania and Australia are presented and compared with other jurisdictions.

Comparison of the meat and carcass quality of lambs raised in organic or conventional production systems. Organic Eprints
PRACHE, S.; BALLET, J.; JAILLER, R.; METEAU, K.; PICARD, B.; RENERRE, M.; BAUCHART, D..
The ‘organic’ label on a product guarantees that synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and hormones are not used in the production process and that the use of pharmaceutical products and drugs is limited. However, product quality is often questioned and we have to anticipate the consumer demand for product quality guarantees. This study was conducted to compare the sensory and nutritional meat and carcass qualities of lambs raised under an organic (O) or a conventional (C) production system. Comparisons were made with both pasture-fed lambs and lambs that were stall-fed indoors with concentrate and hay. The experiment was conducted over two years for stall-fed lambs (S) (group O, n=24; group C, n=24) and three years for pasture-fed lambs (P) (group O, n=36;...
