The study investigates the economic response of tart cherry yields to planting density using an unbalanced longitudinal yield data from tart cherry orchards in Northwest Michigan. The relationship between tart cherry yield and tree age is specified as a linear spline function and planting density interacts with tree age. A random effect method, treating block as random, is used to estimate the spline function. Stochastic simulation was used to estimate the mean and variance of the product of two random variables (price and yield), and the coefficient of variation was used as a measure of how much risk is involved in corn/soybeans production relative to tart cherries production. Estimates of the variance provided the discount factor (10%) and with yields... |

Concept of rural elite in China is introduced. And rural elites are classified into governing elite, economic elite, social elite and cultural elite with phenomenon of overlapping among the four types. Definitions of science nationalization and elite politicalization are introduced. Based on the review of previous research results, meaning of elite nationalization is defined: the state guides elites to join in its operation by means of controlling the elites’ occupation, promoting their status, improving their warfare, assimilating their thought and so on, so that elites may serve the political objectives of the state. Predicaments of rural elites are analyzed. Firstly, some rural governing elites and economic elites are high combined, or they use each... |

Despite the importance of rice in Ivorians's diet, and thus in the economy of the Ivory Coast, self-sufficiency in rice production, until recently, has received little attention from economists and statisticians. Agronomists, sociologists and anthropologists have examined in some detail the cultural practices, soils, land barriers, tools and basic techniques used by the Ivorian farmers. But they have failed to produce much needed basic information related to crop acreage, yields, prices and other areas which are most relevant for policy formulation. This paper analyzes the rice demand and supply in the Ivory Coast, and attempts to estimate both price and income elasticities of demand, and price elasticity of supply. |

Many agricultural producers are faced with the prospect of fewer chemical alternatives to mitigate damage from pests such as disease, weeds, insects, and rodents. Decreased pesticide availability can arise from health and environmental standards stipulated in federal and state regulations. Pesticide alternatives can also be lost due to natural pest resistance and economic considerations. The loss of pesticides due to economic considerations is especially troublesome to specialty crop producers such as fruit, fresh vegetable, and ornamental growers. Although these producers may use pesticides more intensively per acre than the major crop producers, the total acreage devoted to specialty crops is often not enough to warrant the pesticide registration costs... |

The primary purpose of this paper was to provide potential Michigan growers with information on major trends and markets of the U.S. hazelnut industry. Another objective was to explore certain important factors. apparent challenges and possible opportunities for a potential Michigan hazelnut industry. In respect to the first goal, this paper analyzed major production and market trends for the Oregon hazelnut industry, which constitutes almost all of the U.S. hazelnut crop, and explored some inferences about future trends in this industry. Towards the second goal, some aspects were analyzed based on the best available, but rather fragmentary information from initial trials of hazelnut varieties suited to Michigan conditions and small initial onfarm... |

Sudan is the largest country in Africa, covering about 2.5 million kilometers. The population is estimated at 17 million and growing at about 2.5 percent per year, per capita income for 1976/77 was U.S. $290. Much of the country is sparsely populated. Sudan has about 85 million feddans of arable land, 240 million feddans of grazing and 60 million feddans of forest. Of the total cropped area only about 4 million feddans are artificially irrigated while the rest of the area is under dry farming. The proximity of the Sudan to oil rich Middle East countries places it in a favorable position for agricultural exports. Agriculture holds a pivotal position amongst the different sectors of the economy. It contributes nearly 40 percent of GDP, while over 80... |

Many developing countries wish to, but do not publish forecasts of commodity prices. One difficulty often cited is the length (shortness) of the data series. This study tried to determine whether this was a valid reason. Price data for two commodities in a specific country, where the problem is acknowledged were utilized in a case study approach. Existing models were evaluated for applicability to the data series. The identified models were estimated with estimation data and then while keeping the model parameters constant, prices were forecasted in the out-of-sample period. The error associated with the forecast of each model was calculated and the relationship between quantity of data and model accuracy evaluated. The error values of all the models... |

India is a major cotton producing country in the world along with the U.S. and China. A change in the supply of and demand for cotton in the Indian market has the potential to have an impact on world cotton trade. This study evaluates the implications of efficient Bt cotton refuge policies in India on world and U.S. cotton markets. It can be hypothesized that increased refuge requirements for Bt cotton varieties in India could decrease the world supply of cotton because of the lower yield potential of non-Bt cotton varieties planted in refuges. A decrease in world cotton supply could potentially raise world cotton prices, ceteris paribus. This study conceptualizes the impact of efficient refuges in India on world cotton markets by using a partial... |

Insurance policies that trigger on county yield and revenue indexes are expected to be more actuarially fair than policies that trigger on individual farm yield and revenue since individual farm hidden actions and hidden information impacting purchase decisions will be built into insurance premium rates. Findings are expected to help farmers, insurance agents, lenders, and those in academia better understand and evaluate insurance policies that trigger indemnity payments based on county indexes. Case studies are provided to facilitate understanding of tracking between farm and county yields and the importance of the farm-county yield correlation. A protocol is developed to standardize county and farm yields to better illustrate tracking and rules-of-... |

Pastoralism and communal livestock production are important economic activities in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to FAO production figures the number of cattle in two countries, Botswana and Namibia, outnumber the human population (FAO, 1989). In Southern Africa, Botswana's agricultural sector is largely dependent on livestock, because most of the country lacks adequate rainfall for arable agriculture. A complicating factor is the unreliability of the rainfall and the potential for recurrent drought. Indeed, drought is considered a normal occurrence and farmers experience crop failure three or four years in every decade. Tyson, points out that the oscillations observed in past rainfall will likely continue into the future and that the rainfall averages... |

Studies of dairy farm structure have neglected issues of vertical organization of the farm. In this study we model and measure the potential for dairy farms to reduce costs of production through vertical integration. We estimate a multi-stage, multi-output cost function to assess vertical economies of scope in organic and conventional dairy farms. We model the cost of producing grains and forages, which are then used as inputs in the production of milk. We find negligible vertical economies of scope for conventional dairy farms. In contrast, we find significant vertical economies of scope in organic dairy production, suggesting that there is an economic incentive for vertical integration into feed production. The large vertical economies of scope for... |

The role of the agricultural sector in the process of economic development has been a controversial issue in the postwar development literature, as well as in the policy field. In recent years there seems to be greater acceptance of more balanced approaches to development which recognize the inter-relations of the various factors, such as agriculture and industry. The argument for balanced growth strategies stresses the mutual interdependence of the agricultural and industrial sectors. Increases in agricultural output frequently require the widespread adoption of modern technologies. This involves the purchase and use of industrial products, such as fertilizers, pesticides, tools, and machines. Unless these industrial products are available at... |

Cooperative group actions are undergoing a resurgence in popularity in close concert with an increasing awareness of the problems of rural poverty and a belief that group actions can serve as a partial solution to those problems. There are several elements necessary for the economic success of a cooperative, of which the absence of any one may preclude economic success and thus greatly diminish or eliminate the usefulness of cooperatives as an anti-poverty tool. This paper examines capital resources as one prerequisite for economic success by reviewing capital needs and capital sources. The availability of capital as well as the comparative advantages and disadvantages of the various sources are examined as they apply to limited resource cooperatives.... |

The increasing capital requirements and the concomitant increases in external financing suggest the issues: Are there adequate funds available to the farm sector for required growth and adjustment, and does there exist an adequate delivery system for allocation of the funds in an optimal fashion? The purpose of the paper is to examine the farm credit situation with emphasis on the post 1970 era. It is intended that the information compiled and presented will further knowledge in the farm credit field and, as such, be conducive to the analysis and evaluation of credit policies and programs by: (a) policy makers, both federal and provincial, (b) officials of lending institutions, both active and potential, (c) representatives of farm organizations, and... |
