The notion of penaeid shrimp postlarvae quality, which implies a survival potential, is still a subjective parameter. The zootechnical criteria and the visual observations are not sufficient to evaluate the physiological condition of the hatchery reared postlarvae. The resistance of postlarvae to salinity shocks is a representative criteria of their condition. The goal of this study is to present a non-linear regression model at 2 variables (size, salinity) for the P. vannamei postlarvae resistance to salinity shocks. Between the second and the twentieth day after metamorphosis; 5 salinity shocks (20, 15, 10, 5 and 20/00) were tested daily, each one with 50 postlarvae. Survival rates were recorded after 2 hrs. Concurrently, the postlarvae growth in the... |

In order to specify the limits of the high density larval rearing method (80-100 larvae per liter) in clear water with daily total exchange and to control the water quality evolution, the nitrite and total ammonia were measured. Nitrite concentrations in antibiotic treated tanks stayed law (5 ug N02-N/l) but can reached 40 ug N02-N/l after 41 days in untreated tanks, in spite of daily water exchange. Maximum concentrations of total ammonia were 1.70 ppm N during a 24-hour cycle. In the rearing conditions (pH 7.85 to 8.20, temperature 25 to 28 C) the un-ionized ammonia concentrations were 0.07 to 0.18 ppm N. At thase levels, no specifie larval stress was noted. In order to improve the formulation of diets fed to reared Penaeus vannamei, the effects of soya bean and fish meals on the growth, survival, and the characteristics of the hepatopancreas and digestive enzymes of the species were studied. Four soya bean meal concentrations (0, 5, 15, 40%), four fish meal concentrations (0, 5, 15, 30%), two forms of soya bean meal and three fish meals of different geographical origin were tested. Experimental conditions were as follows: ten individuals were placed in each tank (0.5 m2 ) and two tanks were subjected to each treatment. Food was given twice a day (08-09.00 h and 19.00 h) at 10% of the initial weight each day. For biochemical analyses, nine individuals per treatment were used for the determination of the... |

To develop Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) culture in French Polynesia, a high density larval rearing method in clear water for post-larvae mass production has been set up by the "Centre Océanologique du Pacifique". Based on three years of experiments, a production of 60 postlarvae per liter in aOO-liter tank was obtained. The methodology (conical bottom tank, static system with one total daily water exchange, no phytoplankton), the environmental conditions (temperature, light, color of the tank), the water quality control (chlorination, antibiotics, aeration), the larval food (quality and quantity) are given and discussed. The model was used to build a hatchery on a pilot scale (capacity 600,000 post-larvae every 2 months). Due to a high level of... |

To develop shrimp fanning in French Polynesia where no indigenous commercial species of penaeid prawn exists, the first step is to select the right species according to the following criteria: maturation and spawning in captivity, mass production of post-larvae, fast growth at semi-intensive density, acceptability of artificial diet, disease resistance and hardiness. This paper presents the results on P. monodon, Fabricius, the largest Indo-Pacific species. Experiments have been conducted in the "Centre Océanologique du Pacifique" in Tahiti Island where the environmental conditions are water temperature range 25-29 C, salinity 35 ppt, pH 8.2. In order to determine the feasibility of fish culture in French Polynesia's lagoons, preliminary tests were performed in 1973 and 1974. Juveniles (7 to 10 g) of three Carangidae species (Caranx melampygus, C. elacate, C. ignobilis) were caught in the wild and transported to the laboratory; three lots were dispatched among two small tanks (500 liters) with 10 animals each and a floating cage (6 x 6 x 4 m; 1.5 cm mesh) with 900 animals. The range of water temperature was 25 ta 27 C, salinity was about 34.5 ppt, and pH was 8.2. Food was given in the form of a moist pellet consisting of 8O% dry powder mixed with fresh bonito flesh or troca flesh. Such a diet has a 40% protein content due essentially to fish meal (sun-dried lagoon fish). These moist pellets... |

First important problems in pathology at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) have been met during larval rearings of penaeid shrimps and Hacrobrachium rosenbergii. In penaeids, heavy mortalities during the zoea and mysis stages have led to the diagnosis of two main types of diseases: a bacterial necrosis of the appendages and a fungus disease. Two preventive treatments with antibiotics during the zoea stages and a continuous treatment with a selective herbicide (Treflan) allow a consistent production of 100 post-larvae/liter (80% survival from the nauplius stage). With Macrobrachium rosenbergii, during the larval rearing, mortalities of bacterial origin have been recorded in some experiments. The observation of appendage necrosis allows early... |

Dr. Michel explained that obtaining spawners in Japan and the United States is quite different from the Tahitian problem, since AQUACOP's gravid shrimp must be flown in to Papeete from New Caledonia or the Fiji Islands and then trucked several hours to the Centre Oceanologique. As no indigenous species of commercial penaeid shrimp live in the waters of French Po1ynesia, the pre1iminary step in deve10ping shrimp aquaculture was to obtain maturation and spawning in captivity. Five species have been investigated. Wi1d-caught juveni1es from the New Ca1edonia 1agoon (f. merguiensis, f. semisulcatus, ~. ensis) and post1arvae from the Ga1veston NMFS 1aboratory (P. aztecus) and Fujinaga Institute (f. japonicus) have been used to-obtain adu1t stock. Shrimps are reared in circu1ar tanks of 12 m3 with a continuous water circulation through a coral sand bed. Rate of exchange is from 1 to 3 times a day. Throughout the year water temperature is between 25 and 29 C, sa1inity around 34.5 ppt, and pH 8.2. Solar energy is reduced by shade covers.... |

In order to know more about nutritional acceptance of a freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii and to obtain additional information on the feedstuffs which can be used in a prawn diet, several growth tests were carried out. Three sets of experimental tanks were used. Diets were combined so as to introduce either copra meal or acacia meal, plus troca meaI. The major ingredients are tropical products, and were easy to col1ect in large quantites. The protein Ievel was maintained at about 30%. In the first experiment, it was found that a 40% copra meal diet resulted in a fair rate of growth. A higher level of copra meal brought about similar growth levels and a survival rate which was not significantly lower (analysis of variance). This result was checked... |
