| The EUNIS (European Union Nature Information System) habitat classification system aims to provide a common European reference set of habitat types within a hierarchical classification, and to cover all terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats of Europe. The classification facilitates reporting of habitat data in a comparable manner, for use in nature conservation (e.g. inventories, monitoring and assessments), habitat mapping and environmental management. For the marine environment the importance of a univocal habitat classification system is confirmed by the fact that many European initiatives, aimed at marine mapping, assessment and reporting, are increasingly using EUNIS habitat categories and respective codes. | Cet atlas présente les résultats de l'exploitation d’images hyperspectrales et de données Lidar à des fins de cartographie des plateformes récifales de la Réunion. Il vient compléter la traduction en français des habitats terrestres et d’eau douce réalisée par le MNHN‐SPN (Louvel et al., 2013). Il a pour objectif de faciliter l’appropriation de cette typologie par les acteurs concernés (scientifiques, gestionnaires ou bureaux d’études) et favoriser les échanges de connaissance sur la biodiversité des habitats benthiques en cohérence avec ce standard. | In 2000 Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a monitoring strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in order to assess the aftermath of the “Erika” oil spill which took place in December 1999. | Sabellaria alveolata is a sedentary gregarious tube-building species widely distributed from southwest Scotland to Morocco. This species builds what are currently considered the largest European biogenic reefs in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France). As an ecosystem engineer, S. alveolata generates small to large scale topographic complexity, creating numerous spatial and trophic niches for other species to colonize.
