Portfolio Choice with Uncertain Consumption Prices: a mean-variance approch AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Cecchetti, Stephen G..
This paper presents a mean-variance model of portfolio choice and asset pricing when the price of consumption goods as well as the return to assets is uncertain. The correlation of an assets return with purchases at expected prices is shown to reduce both the mean return and the variance of the return of an asset. A numerical approximation is computed to check the accuracy of the mean and variance approximation. Uncertainty of consumption prices is shown to result in long (or speculative) futures holding.

Food security policy in a stochastic world AgEcon
Adelman, Irma; Berck, Peter.
Food security may be increased by variance-reducing strategies, by food aid, or by development strategies. This paper uses a Korea CGE model, subjected to random fluctuation in world-prices and domestic food productivity, to evaluate these policies. We find that poverty-reducing development strategies are the most effective food-security strategies.

Poverty program participation and employment in timber-dependent counties AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Costello, Christopher; Hoffmann, Sandra A.; Fortmann, Louise.
This paper uses cointegrated time-series methods to evaluate the effect of timber employment on participation in a major poverty program-Aid to Families with Dependent Children-Unemployed Parent (AFDC-UP). The study is conducted for major timber-producing counties in California. It is shown that a two-sector structural model can be solved to produce an error-correction model. An error-correction model is estimated with time series on state and county AFDC-UP caseload, state employment, county nontimber employment, and county timber employment. Utilizing tests on the cointegrating space, it is shown that there is no long-run relationship between poverty and timber employment in 10 of the 11 counties studied.

Dynamic dumping AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
A low-cost foreign firm lowers its initially high price–dumping if necessary– until it drives the higher cost domestic firms out of business, whereupon it raises its price. At no time, however, does the foreign firm predate (price below its marginal cost). Tariffs, quotas, and other policies that mandate a minimum number of domestic firms do not qualitatively change the price path (high price, low price, and limit price). The optimal tariff in this dynamic analysis is lower than the optimal tariff in a static analysis (to allow consumers to take advantage of the low-price period).
