| This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and fleet interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit the resources (in preparation). The concept of a métier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. | The study undertaken during the 1994-1998 planning contract on the Breton fishing fleet made it possible to underscore the size of the economic activity in regional territorial waters: More than 85% of the ships work there. This space, which is a matter of national sovereignty, is mainly managed at the regional level. | Une réunion technique a été organisée le 21 mai 2013 par la Commission européenne afin de faire le point sur l’état du stock de bar commun (Dicentrarchus labrax) dans les eaux européennes de l’Atlantique du Nord Est. Cette réunion a conclu que le stock de bar peut être considéré comme dans un état « alarmant », et la Commission a demandé aux Etats membres d’identifier les mesures de gestion qu’ils seraient à même de mettre en place dans les meilleurs délais pour obtenir une diminution des captures de 20%. | Basically, a dredge is a bottom-towed gear and consists of a metal frame with a blade or teeth, to dig into the sediment and extract the shelled molluscs, and a mesh bag to collect the catch. | Face to the lack of data to assess precisely the spatial distribution of catches and fishing effort and for the environmental characterization of the fishing area, Ifremer has been implemented since 2005 a new project, Recopesca. It consists in fitting out a sample of voluntary fishing vessels with sensors recording data on fishing effort (and at mid-terms catches) and physical parameters such as temperature or salinity. | In the Caribbean, snappers (Lutjanidae) and groupers (Serranidae) are often heavily exploited by artisanal or industrial fisheries. This paper analyzes the catches of an artisanal fishery selectively targeting these species with a moderate fishing pressure in the Bay Islands (Honduras), and discusses the implications on the understanding of the early stages of development of reef fisheries. | The identikit of Breton fishing in 2004 can be drafted through a few figures: 1,537 vessels in activity, 315,000 kW of nominal engine power, 7,053 sailors on board, 302,000 tonnes of catches (not including algae), about 466 million euros in profit. However, this global data does not take into account an essential characteristic of this activity: its great diversity. This latter can be declined based on different criteria.
