ArchiMer
Bertrand, Jacques.
Since about twenty years, Ifremer have carried out fishery surveys along the French coasts. A dynamic indicator-based approach to the assessment of multi-stock fisheries has been applied to these data series. Reference points for non-commercial populations and community indicators are seldom available, but reference directions are well established: it is known whether fishing will increase or decrease the indicator, hence the direction that should be avoided. A set of simple indicators of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities were estimated from time-series data provided by scientific surveys (population abundance and average length, community total biomass and number, average length and weight, and size spectrum). Trends in these indicators...

Bertrand, Jacques; Catanzano, Joseph; Rey, Hélène; Tempier, Elisabeth.
The beginning of the 1990s was marked by the will of French and European Community policy makers to change the methods of managing fishing in the Mediterranean. To contribute to this dynamic by an analysis on fishing operations based on exploitation itself and by developing proposals to reinforce participation of fishing professionals in the management of regional fishing were the objectives of the study presented below. The research was conducted based on principles of action research, involving a common discussion among the actors. Within a context of implementing the principle of subsidiarity and Community integration, it became necessary to anticipate the methods of reinforcing the capacity of professional facilities so that the latter could continue...

Stability of spatial structures of demersal assemblages: a multitable approach ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Chessel, Daniel; Bertrand, Jacques.
The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient...

Reproducibility of the multi-component aspect of species diversity across different areas and scales: towards the constitution of a shortlist of complementary indices for monitoring fish diversity? ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Merigot, Bastien; Relini, Giulio; Bertrand, Jacques; Mazouni, Nabila; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Gil De Sola, Luis; Kallianiotis, Argyris; Carpentieri, Paolo; Murenu, Matteo; Durbec, Jean-pierre; Vrgoc, Nedo; Ungaro, Nicola.
Recent theoretical and field studies conducted in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems have suggested that diversity could be a more complex and multi-component concept than previously thought. However, it is still poorly understood to what extent the information provided by the various indices is complementary with regard to diversity, and to what extent this complementarity is reproducible in different situations or at different scales of observation. In the present work, we have analysed the reproducibility of the empirical relationships between 11 diversity indices related to four major aspects (components) of species diversity (species richness, rarity, evenness and species taxonomy) in order to determine whether there is a general pattern of...

Bertrand, Jacques; Chevalier, Robert.
One of the primary uses of trawl survey data is the estimation of abundance of the species involved. But these direct estimates give results with generally a high variability. Reducing this latter is one of the main problems for the scientists involved in such a research. Methods to achieve a better efficiency have been implemented. Nevertheless estimations remain highly variable, so the information on the changes in population, enclosed in the observed series of survey indices is mixed with a noise component result of both the survey sampling variability and effect of uncontrolled factors. PENNING'roN ( 1985) proposed time series models to filter measurement error from the signal. However the length of the series does not always allow using time series...

Duclerc, Jean; Bertrand, Jacques.
The laying out of an offshore site in the gulf of Lion has been realized by immersion of concrete structures in 1985. Two complementary studies have been conducted in order to estimate the impact of such artificiel reef. Gillnet fishery surveys have been done in the vicinity of the structures and also on a control site. Moreover the local profcssional fishery has been investigated for two periods of 16 months, one berore and one arter the reef immersion. The results of the gillnet surveys have already been submitted to publication and the present study displays the investigations concerning the local fishery. It has been shown by the gillnet fishing surveys that the artificial reef led in their very close vicinity to variations in marine species...

Campagnes 2011 ArchiMer
Bertrand, Jacques; Dromer, Clement; Reynal, Lionel.
Spiny lobsters are an important component of the coastal fisheries around the Martinique island. This study aimed to assess the contamination by kepone of the two main species Panulirus argus and P. guttatus in the main fishery area laying along the eastern coast of Martinique. The objectives of the study were to describe the distribution of the spiny lobster contamination in the area, to explore possible relationships with some biological parameters such as individual size, sex and colour of tegument, as well as characterize difference of kepone concentration between the muscle and soft flesh of the head, in view of helping the definition of further fishery management measures. The analyses were done from chemical analyses of 125 samples of spiny lobsters...

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Prigent, M; Bertrand, Jacques; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Fontenelle, G; Foucher, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Rostiaux, Emilie; Trenkel, Verena.
The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes....

Bertrand, Jacques; Abarnou, Alain; Bocquene, Gilles; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Reynal, Lionel.
During the years 1972-1993, kepone a persistent pesticide has been used in the banana fields of the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) to content a weevil. A slow desorption of the molecule from soil induces its transfer to the sea through the rivers from leaching and erosion. This study intended to take stock on the contamination by kepone of the fishery species around the islands fifteen years after the kepone ban. Furthermore other chemical pollutants were sought in fish and shellfish around the Martinique island. The results confirmed persistence of marine fauna contamination by kepone, mainly in the alluvium areas in front of polluted rivers. They shown also that this contamination may spread more widely but with fast decreasing through...

Assessment of impacts from human activities on ecosystem components in the Bay of Biscay in the early 1990s ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Bertrand, Jacques; Brind'Amour, Anik; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena.
The ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management and, more specifically, the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive require the assessment of the state and dynamics of an ecosystem in order to determine suitable management strategies. This paper takes an analytical approach to assess the state of the Bay of Biscay ecosystem in the early 1990s, chosen as a period of reference because key monitoring data series have been collected since then. To assess the state of the ecosystem, the pressures exerted by six broad categories of human activities were examined. A literature review of the ecosystem components was made and a component tree was tailored according to data availability. Data rich components were subdivided into subcomponents for their...

Bertrand, Jacques; Catanzano, Joseph; Caboche, C; Rey, Hélène; Tempier, E.

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....
