The role of mangrove in the French Guiana shrimp fishery ArchiMer
Diop, Bassirou; Sanz, Nicolas; Blanchard, Fabian; Walcker, Romain; Gardel, Antoine.
This paper investigates the role of mangrove as an habitat in the evolution of the French Guiana shrimp stock to explain the recent collapse of shrimp production. To achieve our aim, we use the open access fishery model developed by Barbier and Strand [1998. “Valuing Mangrove-Fishery Linkages-A Case Study of Campeche, Mexico.” Environmental and Resource Economics 12: 151–166] and integrate mangrove surface into the shrimp natural growth function. This enables to account directly for the effects of mangrove surface changes on the stock dynamics and thus production. Our results indicate that financial losses in the French Guiana shrimp fishery increase when mangrove surface decreases and are mitigated when mangrove surface increases. We show that changes in...

Outbreaks of Disease Possibly Due to a Natural Avian Herpesvirus Infection in a Colony of Young Magnificent Frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) in French Guiana ArchiMer
De Thoisy, Benoit; Lavergne, Anne; Semelin, Julien; Pouliquen, Jean-francois; Blanchard, Fabian; Hansen, Eric; Lacoste, Vincent.
The Ile du Grand Connetable nature reserve is a rocky island off the Northern Atlantic coast of South America that hosts a unique population of Magnificent Frigatebirds (Fregata, magnificens, Pelecaniformes). A high chick mortality, associated with nodular proliferative lesions, involving featherless areas, such as legs, neck, eyelids, and beak, was recorded during a consecutive 2 yr and affected almost half of the generation. Investigations were therefore, conducted to determine the cause of these epidemics. Although histopathologic investigations suggested that malnutrition, because of fewer resources in the Frigates' fishing area, could be the cause of the epidemic, it novel alphaherpesvirus, tentatively called Fregata magnificens herpesvirus, was...

When physical oceanography meets population genetics: The case study of the genetic/evolutionary discontinuity in the endangered goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara, Perciformes: Epinephelidae) with comments on the conservation of the species ArchiMer
Benevides, E. A.; Vallinoto, M. N. S.; Fetter Filho, A. F. H.; De Souza, J. R. B.; Silva-oliveira, G.; Freitas, M. O.; Ferreira, B. P.; Hostim-silva, M.; Bertoncini, A. A.; Blanchard, Fabian; Torres, R. A..
Epinephelus itajara is one of the marine fish species most threatened for extinction and it is considered to be "critically endangered" by the IUCN. The present study evaluated the genetic diversity of the species and the genetic/evolutionary relationships of its populations along the Atlantic coast of South America. The results indicate relatively reduced genetic variation, re-emphasizing the low adaptive potential of the species. One of the populations presented relatively high degrees of genetic diversity and it is evolutionary isolated from the all other populations. The evidences indicate the existence of two Evolutionarily Significant Units comprising E. itajara in the Atlantic coast of South America and the conservation prospects for the species...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of larval fish in a tropical estuarine mangrove: example of the Mahury river estuary (French Guiana) ArchiMer
Rousseau, Yann; Blanchard, Fabian; Gardel, Antoine.
The present study focuses on the structure and dynamics of the ichthyoplankton community of the Mahury Estuary (French Guiana) and the factors that influence them. Data were collected on three mangrove sites located in the inner, middle, and outer areas of the estuary. More than 45 000 larvae were collected, representing 31 families and 67 taxa. The community was numerically dominated by few species: Engraulidae was the most abundant family, followed by Gobiidae, Eleotridae, and Sciaenidae. As expected, the most abundant larval taxa were estuarine and mangrove species, with the addition of freshwater species in the inner area of the estuary and taxa with marine affinities in the outer area. The densities of most species were influenced by site more than by...

Sustainability of tropical small-scale fisheries: Integrated assessment in French Guiana ArchiMer
Cisse, Abdoul; Blanchard, Fabian; Guyader, Olivier.
Like many tropical small-scale fisheries, the French Guiana coastal fishery is characterized by the high fish biodiversity of its ecosystem, the weak selectivity of the fleets exploiting the resources, and the heterogeneity of the vessels in terms of size and fishing techniques. The Rapfish method is used to assess sustainability within 11 fishery systems by means of 27 attributes relating to ecological, economic, social, and technological fields. Overall results indicate an average performance in the weak sustainability range. Comparisons made among the FSs show a gradient of sustainability performance from the western portion of the coast to the eastern portion. Several recommendations are formulated to raise the current “sustainability” status, such as...

Fishing effects on diversity, size and community structure of the benthic invertebrate and fish megafauna on the Bay of Biscay coast of France ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian; Le Loc'H, Francois; Hily, Christian; Boucher, Jean.
Within the framework of the 'dynamic equilibrium model', we tested the hypothesis that fishing causes major disturbance to benthic communities on deeper bottoms of the continental shelf. Benthic megafauna on the Bay of Biscay coast of France was sampled on fishing grounds subject to various conditions of exploitation. Samples were taken at around 100 m depth to avoid strong natural disturbances. Species diversity and the largest body mass class of invertebrates were smaller in strongly exploited areas than in moderately exploited ones. Biomass size spectra in strongly exploited areas were characterised by a comparatively large biomass of small invertebrates, hence the K-dominance curve of abundance was either above the biomass curve, or the curves...

Effets de l'exploitation par la pêche sur la dynamique de diversité des peuplements de poissons démersaux : analyse comparée du rôle des interactions entre espèces dans le golfe de Gascogne et dans le golfe du Lion ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices are used in order to characterize the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS, carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for the stocks assessment provide the data. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are...

A stochastic viability approach to ecosystem-based fisheries management ArchiMer
Doyen, Luc; Thebaud, Olivier; Bene, Christopher; Martinet, V.; Gourguet, S.; Bertignac, Michel; Fifas, Spyros; Blanchard, Fabian.
Academia and management agencies show a growing interest for ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM). However, the way to operationalize this approach remains challenging. The present paper illustrates how the concepts of stochastic co-viability, which accounts for dynamic complexities, uncertainties, risk and sustainability constraints, can be useful for the implementation of EBFM. In the present case, this concept is used to identify fishing strategies that satisfy both ecological conservation and economic sustainability in a multi-species, multi-fleet context. Economic Viability Analysis (EVA) and the broader Co-Viability Analysis (CVA), are proposed to expand the usual Population Viability Analysis (PVA) and precautionary approach. An illustration is...

Evaluation of trawling disturbance on macrobenthic invertebrate communities in the Bay of Biscay, France: Abundance biomass comparison (ABC method) ArchiMer
Vergnon, Rémi; Blanchard, Fabian.
The necessity to move from a traditional fishery management to an ecosystem approach is now acknowledged. Indicators are required to support the development of this approach. For example, community indicators have been proposed to assess the impact of fishing. We tested here the applicability of one such community indicator, the abundance-biomass comparison (ABC method), as a measure of the impact of bottom trawling (years of sampling: 2001 and 2003) on the benthic invertebrates-typically starfishes, crabs, squat lobsters, shrimps and large hard-shelled molluscs-of "Grande Vasiere", a major French fishing zone, in the Bay of Biscay. The ABC method is generally used as an impact indicator for different types of physical, biological and anthropogenic...

Ecological-economic modelling for the sustainable management of biodiversity ArchiMer
Doyen, Luc; Cisse, Abdoul; Gourguet, Sophie; Mouysset, L.; Hardy, Pierre-yves; Bene, Christophe; Blanchard, Fabian; Jiguet, Frederic; Pereau, J.-c.; Thebaud, Olivier.
Terrestrial and marine biodiversity provides the basis for both ecosystems functioning and numerous commodities or services that underpin human well-being. From several decades, alarming trends have been reported worldwide for both biodiversity and ecosystem services. Therefore the sustainable management of biodiversity requires a double viewpoint balancing ecological conservation with the welfare of human societies. Understanding the underlying trade-offs, synergies and interactions imposes the development of interdisciplinary researches and methods. In that respect, bio-economic or ecological economic modeling is likely to play a major role. The present paper intends to elicit the key features, strengths and challenges of bio-economic approaches...
