Analyzing Risk and Uncertainty of New Product Marketing: The Case of eMerge Interactive and VerifEYE® AgEcon
Gunderson, Michael A.; Roucan, Maud; Boehlje, Michael; Gray, Allan W..
This teaching case focuses on the application of decision tools to assist managers making choices in an uncertain business climate. The case considers the difficult task of introducing a new product into the market. Under consideration is a sophisticated, surface-scanning technology that has applications in the food processing, food retail, and health industry sectors. Management of eMerge Interactive is faced with uncertainties in legislation, demand, and competitor response. The case can be used as part of a course in strategy and/or risk management where tools such as influence diagrams, scenario and payoff matrices, decision trees, and real options are introduced.

FARM POLICY IN AN INDUSTRIALIZED AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Boehlje, Michael; Doering, Otto C., III.
The structural changes that will impact agriculture over the next decade will be profound. The economic benefits of the dual dimensions of industrialization of agriculture-implementation of a manufacturing approach to the food and industrial product production and distribution chain, and negotiated coordination among the stages in that chain are expected to result in a much more industrialized agricultural sector. The implications of this industrialization process for agricultural markets and market policy, and agricultural policy in general, are critical. The focal point of this discussion is the set of public policy options that might be considered to shape the future structure of the agricultural sector.

A FLAT RATE TAX: IMPACTS ON REPRESENTATIVE HOG AND GRAIN FARMS AgEcon
Doye, Damona G.; Boehlje, Michael.
This paper focuses on identifying shifts in the tax burden within agriculture associated with various flat tax proposals by comparing their effects on farms with different enterprise combinations, resource bases, and financial characteristics. In general, the flat tax imposes higher average tax burdens on small farms and yields a tax cut from ERTA laws for large farms even when the tax base is broadened.

A DEBT SELECTION MODEL FOR BANKS OF THE COOPERATIVE FARM CREDIT SYSTEM AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W.; Boehlje, Michael.
This article discusses the application of a quadratic programming model to the bond and note participation decision of a Cooperative Farm Credit Bank. The model generates an efficient frontier of bond and note portfolios from which a bank can choose. The composition of these portfolios depends upon the expected cost and variance-covariance of cost for the bond and note activities, debt needs, and the debt policy constraints of a bank. The results indicate that the interest rate risk of various bond and note issues should be considered when making debt participation decisions.

THE GROWTH POTENTIAL FOR THE INDIANA LIVESTOCK INDUSTRIES AgEcon
Boehlje, Michael; Gray, Allan W.; Mark, Tyler B..
Feed, processing capacity, population density versus animal density, and environmental capacities are the four different dimensions of livestock location and growth potential analyzed for Indiana. These four dimensions provide livestock producers, government officials, and livestock associations a valuable perspective on the constraints that could limit Indiana's livestock growth potential. Comparisons among 21 states on these dimensions indicated that Indiana is a second choice of states for livestock growth; Kansas and Iowa are the only first choices. Indiana's strength in the state comparison is its ability to assimilate the phosphorus produced by livestock and commercial phosphorus. As environmental regulations continue to tighten and shift from...

TEACHING NOTE TO ACCOMPANY WHICH WAY TO GROW AT MBC FARMS? AgEcon
Ehmke, Cole; Dobbins, Craig L.; Boehlje, Michael.
This teaching note accompanies the case study "Which Way to Grow at MBC Farms?" The case was published in the Review of Agricultural Economics, Volume 26, Number 4, 2004. Like many farm operations, MBC Farms is trying to determine what strategic actions to take to remain competitive. The farm produces corn and soybeans, contracted specialty corn, and milk. The crops and dairy managers are considering growth opportunities, but have not decided on a strategy. There are a number of possibilities, but the management team is seriously considering expanding either the dairy to take advantage of a milk contract or contract crop production. With the MBC Farms case, instructors can teach farm business managers how to use strategic and financial planning tools to...

BIOLOGICAL MANUFACTURING AND INDUSTRIALIZATION OF PRODUCTION AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Boehlje, Michael; Gray, Allan W..
Farming is in the midst of a major transformation—not only in technology and production practices, but also in size of business, resource control and operation, business model and linkages with buyers and suppliers. Both the livestock and grain sectors are changing from an industry dominated by family-based, small and modest size, relatively independent firms to one of generally larger businesses following an industrial business model that are more tightly aligned across the value chain. We describe some of the fundamental concepts and characteristics of biological manufacturing and then illustrate these characteristics with a brief description of three modern farming businesses. The characteristics include: attribute driven or differentiated products, a...

EXCEL COOPERATIVE: STRATEGIC RESPONSE TO THE BOOM IN BIOFUELS. TEACHING NOTE AgEcon
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Boehlje, Michael; Gray, Allan W.; Akridge, Jay T..
The objective of this paper is to present the teaching note of a case study. The case study outlines the strategic issues facing Excel Cooperative as a result of the rapid expansion of biofuel production capacity in the Midwestern U.S. Excel Cooperative is a mid-sized, ‘local’, farmer-owned cooperative serving farmers in north central Indiana. Excel is composed of four divisions: agronomy, energy, grain, and feed/livestock. With the Excel case, the reader must think strategically about the broad impacts of the biofuel “boom”, apply strategic management tools and decision-making under uncertainty concepts to better understand the impacts, and frame a response. The methodology proposed in the teaching note is composed of a SWOT analysis, scorecarding and...
