In the spring of 2002, the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries initiated strategy work on the cultivation of authorised GM crops in Danish agriculture. The aim was to produce a Danish model for the co-existence of GM, conventional and organic crops in support of the free choice of consumers and to ensure development possibilities for new and existing agricultural production forms. Three groups were set up, that were assigned the task of presenting the scientific and legal problems as well as drawing up a proposal for a Danish co-existence model. These groups were the analysis group (working group), the legal group and the contact group. |

Establishment methods have proven to be of major importance for grass seed production. The objective of this research was to test the effect of different sowing techniques on plant establishment and the subsequent seed yield. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is used as the model grass due to its large importance in Danish agriculture. In a three-year trial six different methods of under-sowing of perennial ryegrass in a spring barley cover crop were employed. Production of organic vegetable seeds is possible in Denmark for some of the late maturing vegetable species - when performed in tunnels. At the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS) different growing systems in tunnels have been studied in carrot (Daucus carota L.), cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. oleracea) and leek (Allium porrum L.). Tunnel production of carrot and leek seed increases yield and germination percentages compared to normal field conditions. Yields in the range of 100 –250 g seeds/m2 can be obtained in both species. A hybrid cauliflower seed production is possible in tunnels with a yield range of 9,7 – 67,6 g seeds/plant. Kløversnudebiller og kløvergnavere kan forårsage udbyttetab i hvidkløver til frø. Ved Danmarks JordbrugsForskning er der de sidste fem år lavet et forsøg, der har til formål at bestemme snudebillernes skadevirkning. Der blev i gennemsnit af de fem års forsøg målt et merudbytte på ca. 40 pct. ved at bekæmpe snudebiller. Forsøgene kan ikke bruges til at belyse, hvor mange sprøjtninger det er nødvendigt at udføre mod snudebiller. |

Co-existence is defined as the farmers being able to choose between conventional, organic and genetically modified (GM) crop production, in compliance with the relevant legislation on labelling rules and purity standards. Genes of cultivated plants spread in time and space through pollen and seed dispersal, and in addition handling during transport and processing may also disperse seeds. Der er krav om at al udsæd til anvendelse i økologisk jordbrug skal være produceret økologisk. Inden for en række arter – specielt grønsager – er økologisk udsæd ikke tilgængelig, så indtil videre er der dispensation for ovennævnte krav. I Forskningsprogram frøavl II er afprøvet økologisk frøproduktion af gulerod, blomkål og porre. Generelt er de opnåede resultater positive både, hvad angår udbytte og kvalitet. Specielt porre har vist sig som en særdeles robust kultur, medens der på Forskningscenter Flakkebjerg har været problemer med svampesygdomme i blomkålsproduktionen (knoldbægersvamp). I projektets sidste år er forskellige strategier mod knoldbægersvamp blevet afprøvet, men de endelige kvalitetsanalyser foreligger endnu ikke. |

Organic vegetable seed production is possible in Denmark for some of the late maturing vegetable species - when performed in tunnels. At the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS) different growing systems in tunnel have been studied in both open pollinated and hybrid carrot (Daucus carota L.) for seed production. Tunnel production of carrot increases yield and germination percentages compared to normal field conditions and yields in the range of 100 –250 g seeds/m2 can be obtained. The lightweight tunnel production system can be widely used and modified for small-scale producers also in developing countries. |

Results from field experiments in 2000 and 2002 showed that intercropping of perennial ryegrass and green manure legumes prolonged the time for nitrogen accumulation in the grass seed crop. The effect on the grass seed yield was dependent on the green manure legume species. However, using the intercropping technique it was possible to achieve seed yield at 1012 kg ha-1 in 2000 and at 829 kg ha-1 in 2000, which is very promising for the future organic seed production of perennial ryegrass. |

Until now commercial genetically modified (GM) crops – soy, corn, canola and cotton - and their products have not been successfully segregated from organic or conventional non-GM production systems. Where GM crops are grown, GM contamination may be inevitable. However, physical and legal control measures imposed before the introduction of GM crops may help protect organic standards, supply chain integrity, certification and client confidence, but this is not yet fully tested. IFOAM’s approach to its present position on GM crops may not be sustainable long term as several invasive technologies – GM organisms (especially pharma crops, animals and micro-organisms), nanoparticles, and food irradiation – all challenge organic standards and integrity |
