This is an overview of the hormones which may be involved in food intake control in fish, and some hypothetical pathways of their action are given based on mammalian knowledge. Most of the observed effects of these hormones may result from four types of mechanisms, each hormone acting by one or several as follows: (1) hormones could have a direct effect on central nervous system centres, associated with food intake behaviour or via vagal afferent neurons; (2) an indirect effect may occur via the gut which slows gastrointestinal transit, thus resulting in stomach distention which activates vagal afferent neurons; (3) they could have an indirect effect, acting directly on intermediary metabolism via glucose, flee fatty acids or amino acids mobilization or... |

The IGFs, their receptors and their binding proteins constitute a family of cellular modulators that play essential functions in the regulation of growth and development. In our study, we have carried out the molecular characterization of the IGF-I and its receptor (IGF-1R) from the turbot (Psetta maxima), a teleost flatfish. By RT-PCR, we have cloned an IGF-I cDNA. The deduced peptide shows 70-96 % identity with the other vertebrate IGF-I sequences previously described. We have also cloned a cDNA encoding the IGF type 1 receptor precursor from an embryos cDNA library. The deduced IGF-1R primary sequence contains all the topological features characteristic of the IGF-1R. Indeed, the turbot receptor is highly conserved compared to its mammalian... |

This text, directed to the general public exposes, in first part, on the educational point of view, the mechanisms of ocean acidification resulting from the trapping of the carbon dioxide. Then the text presents a state of the knowledge about the speed of the phenomenon, about its geographical heterogeneousness on the surface of the globe, it draws up a balance sheet of existing or potential impacts on the living species and discusses aggravating factors. In conclusion are called back the main remaining questions, are discussed various solutions in parade to the phenomenon and are underlined the main scientific gaps. |

When juvenile turbot Scophthulmus maximus and sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were fed to satiation, growth and food intake were depressed under hypoxia (3.2 +/- 0.3 and 4.5 +/- 0.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). However, no significant difference in growth was observed between fishes maintained in hypoxia and fed to satiation and fishes reared in normoxia (7.4 +/- 0.3 mg O-2 l(-1)) and fed restricted rations (same food intake of fishes at 3.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). Routine oxygen consumption of fishes fed to satiation was higher in normoxia than in hypoxia due to the decrease in food intake in the latter. Of the physiological parameters measured, no significant changes were observed in the two species maintained in hypoxia. This study confirms the significant interaction between... |

Physiological reactions of sea-basses juveniles (2-6 months) have been followed in laboratory after transfer to different salinities during Summer 1976 and 1977 : hyperhaline : 41 %. , euhaline : 30 %. , mesohaline medium : 9-10 %o , and oligohaline environments : 1-3%o . A lot of fish has been acclimated ina lagoon, at Certes, to 15-20, of salinity. The evolution of gill ATPases activities (Na+ + K+ and Mg2+ ) was followed. Results show different Na+ - K+ ATPase levels, in relationship with the salinity : - at 30 and 42 %c, the level is high at the beginning of Summer (22,3 _+ 2,8 moles Pi . mg Prot -1 . h-1 decreases at the end of Summer (10,8 _+ 0,5) then increases in the fall (30,0 +_ 4,7) ; - at 10 %=, , the enzyme's activity level is steadily low,... |

Turbot juveniles were exposed to four ammonia concentrations [0.17 (L), 0.34 (M), 0.73 (MH) and 0.88 (H) mgl(-1) NH3-N] for different exposure durations (28 days minimum to 84 days). Their physiological status and growth performances were compared to a control group [0.004 (C) mgl(-1) NH3-N]. No growth was observed in the H group, and by day 57, mass increase in the MH group was only 15% of that in group C. During the first month growth in the L group was similar to that in control group while it was lower (33%) in the M group; afterwards the L and M groups had a similar growth (half that of controls). Accumulation of total ammonia nitrogen (TA-N) in plasma was dependent on ambient ammonia concentrations. Plasma urea levels in ammonia-exposed fish were... |

Two rapeseed meals (RM1 and RM2), containing glucosinolates at a concentration of 26 and 40 mumol/g, respectively, were incorporated at increasing levels (10, 20, and 30% for RM1 and 30 and 50% for RM2) in diets of juvenile rainbow trout. Disturbances in the thyroid axis appeared after 14 days of feeding (with a dietary incorporation level of 10%). The dietary supplementation with T-3 or iodine induced an increase in plasma T-3 levels, compared to that in fish fed the RM diets, and reduced the deleterious effect of RM on growth. When trout were reared in seawater, there was also a slight increase in thyroid hormone levels. TSH treatment had no effect on the thyroid hormone plasma levels. The incorporation of 30% of RM1, which induced a lower dietary... |

Ionic (Na+, K+, Cl-, PO43-, pH), total CO2, total calcium and protein concentrations in the plasma and endolymph of the inner ear were compared in trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and turbot Scophthalmus maximus. In both species, saccular endolymph was characterized by high levels of K+ and total CO2 and in trout by an alkaline pH, The kinetic characteristics of proton secretion across the saccular epithelium of trout were investigated using a titration technique in which isolated saccules were mounted as closed sacs. The rate of proton secretion depends strongly on the pH of the Ringer's solution and secretion stops at a pH below 7.2, Proton secretion is driven by an energy-dependent mechanism involving basolateral ouabain-sensitive Na+/K+ exchangers. Proton... |

Effects of O-2 supersaturation on metabolism and growth were studied in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). When fish were reared for 30 days in water containing O-2 at 147% or 223% air saturation, there were no significant differences in food intake, growth, food conversion or protein utilization compared to fish exposed to normoxia (100% air saturation in water outlet). Exposure to hyperoxia resulted in increased body fat deposition. Daily rates of O-2 consumption of resting fish were not affected by O-2-concentrations, and there were no significant differences in rates of nitrogenous excretion among fish exposed to the different O-2-concentrations. Turbot tolerated severe hyperoxia, 350% air saturation, for 10 days. There were changes in acid-base... |
