| .-Alkali metals prove to be very sensitive to alteration process even if this process is moderate. It is very difficult to use these elements to trace magmatic processes since their concentration may Vary within an homogeneous "unaltered" unit. From all the basaltic units investigated, a classification of "low partition coefficient" elements is presented (Sc, Ti, V, Y, Zr, Nb, La-Tb , Hf, Ta, Th) . The incompatible elements ratios (Y/Tb, Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta) are constant in the samples studied and are nearly equal to the same ratios in chondrites. This is consistent with the existence of an homogeneous primordial mantle at the scale of the North Atlantic, compatible with a chondritic composition of the earth. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

| Whole-rock geochemical data were obtained for 178 samples selected from the petrologically freshest parts of most of the flow units recovered from the nine holes. These data include 170 major element analyses (XRF) and 174 trace-element analyses (XRF and INAA). We include representative microprobe analyses of the primary minerals and fresh basaltic glasses (where present) in 40 selected samples. We also present 87Sr/88Sr ratios for 14 samples selected from the holes at 63"N. These analytical data, together with petrographic data obtained from the study of some 500 thin sections, have enabled us to establish a detailed lithostratigraphy for each basement section. | Large-scale heterogeneities in the mantle are investigated through trace elements measured in oceanic basalts from different locations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.The study relies upon the physico-chemical properties of the elements and their classification according to their partition coefficients. | Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidence only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compared to the East Pacific Ridge. | This chapter presents major oxide and trace element determinations of igneous whole-rock compositions from sites drilled during Leg 60 and electron microprobe mineral and glass analyses of samples from Sites 454 and 458. Interarc basin basalts from the Mariana Trough (Sites 454 and 456) are similar in all respects to depleted mid-ocean ridge basalts. Basaltic andesites and andesites from Site 458 (Mariana fore-arc region) are more depleted than mid-ocean ridge basalts and show different geochemical behavior for Zr-, Hf, and Ti when compared on an extended Coryell- Masuda plot. | Axial bathymetry, major/trace elements, and isotopes suggest:that the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) between 56 degrees S and 66 degrees S is devoid of any hotspot influence. PAR (56-66 degrees 5) samples have in-average lower Sr-87/Sr-86 and Nd-143/Nd-144 and higher Pb-206/(204)pb than northern Pacific midocean ridge basalts (MORB), and also than MORE from the other oceans. The high variability of Pb isotopic ratios (compared to Sr and Nd) can be due to either a;general high mu (HIMU) (high U/Pb) affinity of the southern Pacific upper mantle or to a mantle event first recorded in time by Pb isotopes. | The MAPCO cruise of the R.V. Jean-Charcot (October-November, 1979) sampled zero-age basalts along the Mid Atlantic Ridge from the Azores triple junction to 24°N. Preliminary shipboard geochemical analyses together with previOusly collected data show that hygromagmaphile elements are not randomly distributed along the ridge. North from Hayes transform, the chondrite normalised diagrams of these elements show flat to enriched distributions for the most hygromagmaphile elements.
