Some notes on species of the genera Bachia and Scolecosaurus Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
Our herpetological collections contain only five specimens referable to the genera Bachia and Scolecosaurus, while the genus Bachia is represented in the Amsterdam Zoological Museum by eight specimens. Scanty though this material may be, some of the specimens proved to be of sufficient interest to justify the publication of these notes. At present thirteen species of Bachia 1) are known, viz., the twelve species listed in a key by Burt & Burt (1931, pp. 315-316) and Bachia anomala Roux (1929, p. 31). Perhaps Apatelus bresslaui Amaral (1935) must be referred to Bachia too. Roux (1929), Burt & Burt (1931) and Loveridge (1933) published notes on the variation of several characters, and these authors showed that the variation is greater than had been...

Herpetological Notes XIV - XVI Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
At the request of Dr K. P. Schmidt, Chicago, I recently examined the types of Psammophis antillensis Schl. This species as originally described was a composite, and it is, therefore, necessary to select a lectotype to restrict the name antillensis to one of the species involved. The difficulty is that Schlegel did not label his types as such, and that in most cases he did not mention how many specimens he actually examined. From the introduction to his Essai we know that Schlegel visited Paris, that the collections of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle were placed at his disposal, and that he was allowed to take the undescribed species with him to Leiden for further studies (Schlegel, 1837, I, p. XXIV). What happened in the case of Psammophis...

Notes on some recent and fossil cats, chiefly from the Malay Archipelago Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
INTRODUCTION The present paper contains notes on some recent cats in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, as well as descriptions of the fossil Felidae in the "Collectie Dubois", Leiden, which its Director Prof. Dubois entrusted to me. The fossils were collected in Java 1) by Prof. Eug. Dubois during his searches for remains of the precursor of man, and with the intention to gather data about the geological age and ecology of this precursor (cf. Dubois, 1888). The age of the deposits from which the fossil cats were collected, has been much discussed. A review of the literature (up to 1931) on this subject has been given by Van Es (1931), who concludes that the Trinilfauna must be referred to the lower plistocene age, while...

Some Snakes from the Lesser Antilles Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In a previous paper, published in the same series, Vol. 2 (1940), the author dealt with a small collection of snakes obtained by Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK in 1930 and 1936 on the islands off the Venezuelan coast and on the adjacent mainland. The present article reports on some specimens, chiefly from the Dutch islands of the Windward Group, presented by him to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden in later years. Some notes are included on three specimens of Alsophis from the same area that were already present in the collections of this museum (indicated by M.L.). — The photographs were made by Dr. HUMMELINCK.

Herpetological Notes X - XII Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
X. NOTES ON THE NEWLY DESCRIBED GENUS CACOPHRYNE DAVIS Recently Davis (1935) pointed out that the toad known in literature as Bufo borbonicus (Tschudi) or Nectophryne borbonica (Tschudi) does not belong to either of these genera, and that it even does not belong to the Bufonidae, for the species differs from the true toads (Bufonidae) in two important characteristics, as it lacks Bidder's organs and does not possess testes of an elongated shape. Moreover the pectoral girdle proved to be firmisternal instead of arciferal. A new genus, Cacophryne, in the family Atelopodidae, was erected for this species by Davis, and this author (1935, p. 90) mentions that possibly some other species at present included in the genus Bufo, i.e., Bufo penangensis (Stol.),...

Some notes upon the anatomy of Tropidophis and Trachyboa (Serpentes) Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In literature only very scanty information is to be found about the viscera of the Boid genera Tropidophis and Trachyboa, and therefore I believed it worth while to publish some notes which I made during dissections of the following species and subspecies: Tropidophis melanurus (Schleg.), Tropidophis maculatus haetianus (Cope), Tropidophis pardalis pardalis (Gundl.) and Trachyboa gularis Ptrs. The notes are in no way exhaustive; the specimens have been preserved in alcohol for a long time, and therefore it was not possible to study all features in detail. All but two genera of the Boidae have two well developed lungs. One of these two exceptions was mentioned already by Cope (1894, pp. 218, 220: Ungualia; 1900, p. 697), viz., the genus Ungalia (i.e.,...

Some remarks on the Pulmonary Artery in snakes with two lungs Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
The respiratory organs of snakes show a great diversity according to genera and species. In the Boidae (two genera excepted; cf. Brongersma, 1951 a and 1951 b), and in Xenopeltis unicolor (Reinw.) both lungs are well developed, although the left is shorter than the right (Butler, 1895). The difference in length between the right and the left lung is not the same in all genera and species, but it also shows individual variations within the species. In the Anilidae the left lung has undergone further reduction than in the Boidae; in Cylindrophis rufus (Laur.) the left lung is still rather well developed, its length is 12% of that of the right lung; in Anilius scytale (L.) the left lung is rudimentary, its length being only 3.5% of that of the right lung; in...

Notes on Maticora bivirgata (Boie) and on Bungarus flaviceps Reinh. Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
Loveridge (1944) published a key to the species and subspecies belonging to the genus Maticora Gray. This author emphasized that a much larger material than he had at his disposal should be examined, and that all records from literature should be studied, if a clear picture of the subspecies and their ranges was to be obtained. This led me to study the forms of Maticora occurring in the Netherlands East Indies. In the present paper the subspecies of Maticora bivirgata (Boie) are discussed, and some notes on Bungarus flaviceps are given, as specimens of the latter species have been referred to Maticora by several authors. The material examined by me consists of 110 specimens from the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (67...

Herpetological note XIII Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
Pseudothecadactylus nom. nov. In this journal I (Brongersma, 1934, p. 176) described a new genus of gekkonid lizards under the name Torresia. As Dr H. A. Longman, Brisbane, kindly pointed out to me this name is preoccupied by Torresia Castelnau, 1875 (cf. D. S. Jordan, The Genera of Fishes, part III, 1919, p. 378). The genus of gekkonid lizards may now be named: Pseudothecadactylus, type of genus: Thecadactylus australis Gthr., 1877. For the description I may refer to my previous paper on this subject. Dendroaspis Schlegel In recent literature on African herpetology it is usual to give the name Dendraspis Schlegel to a genus of snakes of which Elaps jamesoni Traill, 1843, is the type. Schlegel (1848?, p. 5), however, gave the name Dendroaspis to this...

On the Arrangement of the scales on the dorsal surface of the digits in Lygosoma and allied genera Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
Smith (1937, pp. 215—216, fig. 1) described and figured the different types of scales of the lower surface of the toes in Lygosoma and allied genera. Although several of these types may be found within one genus, they are useful as additional characters to distinguish certain species or groups of species from each other. When studying a number of IndoAustralian scincid lizards, I noticed that the arrangement of the scales on the dorsal surface of the digits shows differences too, which it may be worth while to include in the descriptions of the species as they provide additional characters. The arrangement of the scales seems to be fairly constant within the species. In some cases slight variations were found, but in a series of over one hundred specimens...

Lygosoma (Sphenomorphus) florense barbouri Dunn (Pl. VI fig. 1) Sphenomorphus florense barbouri Dunn, Amer. Mus. Nov., no. 288, 1927, p. 5, and Dunn, in: Burden, Dragon Lizards of Komodo, 1927, p. 203. 1 ♂, Noil Toko, Timor, 1937, leg. P. F. van West, Mus. Leiden, reg. no. 7033. 5 ♂ ♂, 6 ♀ ♀, Timor, leg. These specimens are provisionally referred to the subspecies barbouri, described by Dunn from Wetar .Id. The dark colour of the throat apparently is a character dependent on age; with four exceptions all specimens of a head and body length above 51 mm have black throats or at least some black spots on the throat. Of the four...

Notes on the species of Arthrosaura Blgr. (Teiidae) Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In 1904 two Teiid lizards from Surinam were described by VAN LIDTH DE JEUDE who named them: Arthrosaura versteegii and Prionodactylus kockii. Of the latter species I (1928) was able to show that it did not belong to the genus Prionodactylus but that it was also an Arthrosaura and that A. dorsistriata L. MϋLLER (1923, p. 147) was a synonym of it. The status of the different Arthrosaura-species is again discussed by Ch, E. and M. D. BURT (1931, p. 312—313) in a very interesting study on the South-American lizards in the American Museum of Natural History. At the same time these authors describe a new species, Arthrosaura tatei, from Venezuela, so that they refer four species (reticulata, versteegii, kockii, tatei) to this genus. Dealing with the two species...

On an Alopoglossus from Surinam Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden With one textfigure A single Alopoglossus was taken by Dr. K. M. Hulk during the Corantine Expedition in Surinam. It is described in the present paper as a distinct subspecies of Alopoglossus copii Blgr. Peracca (1894, p. 3) showed that in the type of Pantodactylus borellii (= P. schreibersii (Wiegm.)) the tongue is partly covered by imbricate papillae and partly by oblique plicae. He further mentions (1. c., p. 4) that his observation was confirmed by Boulenger who found too that in Pantodactylus schreibersii (Wiegm.) the posterior half of the tongue may be covered with oblique plicae, while the anterior half bears imbricate papillae. Therefore, Burt & Burt (1931, p. 357) unite the genera Alopoglossus Blgr....

On the variation of Mustela (Lutreola) nudipes Desm. Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D.; Junge, G.C.A..
In recent literature two subspecies of Mustela nudipes, viz., Mustela nudipes nudipes Desm. and Mustela nudipes leucocephalus (Gray), are recognized. In a survey of the Indo-Australian weasels, Dammerman (1940, p. 269) discussed the possibility of recognizing these two subspecies, but through lack of material he could not arrive at a definite conclusion. Since Dammerman's notes were published three more specimens were brought to light in the collections of our Museum. Moreover we had at our disposal two specimens from the collection of Mr. H. J. V. Sody, as well as four specimens and a skull in the Amsterdam Zoological Museum. A study of the variation of Mustela nudipes led us to reconsider the status of Mustela hamakeri Dammerman (1940, p. 266, pl. XV) as...

The Soay Beast Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
On September 13th, 1959, Mr. Tex Geddes and Mr. James Gavin were fishing one mile from Soay (a small island off the south coast of Skye, Inner Hebrides, Scotland), when a strange marine creature appeared and passed fairly close to their boat. Although Dr. Maurice Burton received a report on the sighting from Mr. Geddes in September, 1959, and an account of it from Mr. Gavin in November, 1959, nothing seems to have been published about it at the time. The story was released when in 1960 the autobiography of Mr. Geddes (“Hebridean Sharker”) appeared. Then, the Soay Beast was dealt with by McKay in “The Press & Journal” (Aberdeen) of May 20th, 1960, and by Burton in “The Illustrated London News” of June 4th, 1960. Both McKay and Burton suggest that the...

Frogs and snakes from the island of Morotai (Moluccas) Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
Van Kampen (1924, p. 284) mentions only two species of frogs from Morotai Island; the identification of one of these was considered to be doubtful. Of snakes De Jong (1928, p. 149) records five species from this island. The study of a small collection of frogs and snakes from Morotai, presented to the Leiden Museum in 1862 by H. A. Bernstein, and of two frogs collected by Prof. H. J. Lam in 1926, allows of some additions to be made to previous lists. The species not mentioned by either Van Kampen or De Jong are indicated by an asterisk. * Hyla infrafrenata Gthr. 4 specimens, Morotai, leg. H. A. Bernstein, 1862, reg. no. 1833. * Hyla rueppelli Bttgr. 2 ♂ ♂, between Bilowoh and Goegoeti, Morotai, VI. 1926, leg. Prof. H. J. Lam. These two specimens show some...

On the main branches of the pulmonary artery in some Viperidae Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In all snakes, the Boidae and Xenopeltidae excepted, only the right lung is well developed, while the left lung is rudimentary or absent (BUTLER, 1895). The right lung consists of an anterior alveolar part that is strongly vascularized, and of a posterior smooth-walled air-sac that is anangious. Between these two parts a transitional zone may be present, in which the wall of the lung shows a faint reticulate pattern, and which receives some very fine branches from the pulmonary vessels. In a number of snakes, among which the Viperidae, the situation becomes more complicated. In these snakes the membrane that connects the dorsal ends of the incomplete tracheal cartilages has become greatly expanded, and this dorsal wall has developed an alveolar structure....

Some notes on the genus Hemiphyllodactylus Bleeker Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
A look at the key to the species of the genus Lepidodactylus in Boulenger's Catalogue of Lizards (I, 1885, p. 162) shows at once that the species are placed in two groups differing in the development of the inner digit. This was first noticed by STEJNEGER (1899, p. 800) who transferred L. crepuscularis (Bav.), L. ceylonensis Blgr. and L. aurantiacus (Bedd.) to the genus Hemiphyllodactylus Blkr. At the same time he described a new species, H. leucostictus, from the Hawaii Islands. The different authors on Asiatic herpetology did not notice this publication as it chiefly dealt with the land-reptiles of the Sandwich-Islands. The attention was again attracted to it by TAYLOR (1922, p. 65) who (1918, p. 237) described a new species, H. insularis, from the...
