The aim of this study is to better understand the different overriding mechanisms that control the evolution of the temperature in the Bay of Biscay, through realistic simulations over a period of 50 years. Based on the work of Michel et al. (2009) on the variability of temperature in the Bay of Biscay (Fig1). We will extend the understanding of the interannual variability to the haline contents and the circulation at regional scale. Here we compare two global simulations, ORCA-G70 and ORCA-GRD100 (¼°resolution), that differs mainly in the vertical resolution and we show their variability. |

The gap analysis of observing systems presented in this report is focused on the evaluation of the continuum between coastal observations and open ocean observations (including the shelf-break transition region). Some recommendations are suggested with the aim of improving the efficiency of existing observing systems in coastal and open ocean regions. Gaps in Observing networks, Data availability, Sustainability and Technology are considered. Main recommendations following identified gaps can be summarized as: - The spatial coverage of observing networks need to be improved between the near-coast and open ocean observing systems. - The general lack of observations over the shelf break and the continental shelf can be improved based on opportunity... |

The present study focuses on the spatial and temporal variability of interactions between physics and biogeochemistry during the Rossby wave passage in the South Atlantic Ocean. The Rossby wave signature in sea level anomalies (SLA) and surface chlorophyll a concentration anomalies (CHLA) is analyzed using remotely sensed data from 1997 to 2006. Wavelengths between 400 and 1100 km, with westward propagating speeds up to 7.5 cm.s−1, are observed. Using a theoretical model, three processes (meridional advection of surface chlorophyll a concentrations, uplifting of subsurface chlorophyll a maximum, and upwelling of nutrients) are likely to explain the chlorophyll a Rossby wave signature. A statistical assumption allows quantifying the relative importance of... |

COAST-HF (Coastal OceAn observing SysTem – High Frequency) is a French national observation network of the physical and biogeochemical dynamics of the coastal ocean, at high frequency. COAST-HF aims at understanding and analysing changes of contrasted coastal ecosystems at different temporal scales from extreme or intermittent high frequency (hour, day) events to multi-year trends. Since several years (from 2000 for the longest time series in Bay of Brest), the network extends along the English Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean French coasts through 14 fixed platforms instrumented for the in situ high-frequency (≤ 1h) observations. Several French research institutes (IFREMER, CNRS, Marine Universities) are operating these systems. The organization of... |

Integration of observations of the coastal ocean continuum, from regional oceans to shelf seas and estuaries/deltas with models, can substantially increase the value of observations and enable a wealth of applications. In particular, models can play a critical role at connecting sparse observations, synthesizing them, and assisting the design of observational networks; in turn, whenever available, observations can guide coastal model development. Coastal observations should sample the two-way interactions between nearshore, estuarine and shelf processes and open ocean processes, while accounting for the different pace of circulation drivers, such as the fast atmospheric, hydrological and tidal processes and the slower general ocean circulation and climate... |

In the framework of the European projects FP7 JERICO (http://www.jerico-fp7.eu/) and H2020 JERICO NEXT (http://www.jerico-ri.eu/), this study consisted in carrying out an objective design analysis of coastal HF radar networks with the ArM (Array Modes) method (Le Hénaff et al., 2009; Lamouroux et al., 2016; Charria et al., 2016). The ArM approach is a non-assimilative, data-model synergistic approach: it uses ensembles in response to known error sources to describe prior (model) uncertainties, and aims at quantitatively evaluating the performance of the observation network at detecting those uncertainties amidst observational noise. The ArM analysis consists in calculating and interpreting spectra of the representer matrix, as well as modal representers,... |

The presence of a quasi-stationary anticyclonic eddy within the southeastern Bay of Biscay (centred around 44°30′N-4°W) has been reported on various occasions in the bibliography. The analysis made in this study for the period 2003–2010, by using in situ and remote sensing measurements and model results shows that this mesoscale coherent structure is present almost every year from the end of winter-beginning of spring, to the beginning of fall. During this period it remains in an area limited to the east by the Landes Plateau, to the west by Le Danois Bank and Torrelavega canyon and to the northwest by the Jovellanos seamount. All the observations and analysis made in this contribution, suggest that this structure is generated between Capbreton and... |

Recent advances in Coastal Ocean Forecasting Systems (COFS) are discussed. Emphasis is given in the integration of the observational and modeling components, each developed in the context of monitoring and forecasting in the coastal seas. These integrated systems must be linked to larger scale systems toward seamless data sets, nowcasts and forecasts (from the global ocean, through the continental shelf and to the nearshore regions). Emerging capabilities include: methods to optimize coastal/regional observational networks; and probabilistic approaches to address both science and applications related to COFS. International collaboration is essential to exchange best practices, achieve common frameworks and establish standards. |

Daily time series of in-situ tide gauge records and river runoff data were analysed to investigate the contribution of river discharge storm events to sea level in the Bay of Biscay. Three main river systems were considered for this study, representing cases of small (Nervión, 1900 km2), medium (Adour, 16880 km2) and large (Gironde, 84811 km2) watershed basins. Typical storms correspond to water discharge rates of 150, 700, and 1100 m3 s−1 from the Nervión, Adour, and Gironde rivers, respectively. The effect of these events on daily mean sea level was evaluated using two different approaches: (1) through the analysis of time series of tide gauges placed within the river mouths; and (2) through numerical simulations using the ROMS model (Regional Ocean... |

The coastal area is the most productive and dynamic environment of the world ocean, offering significant resources and services for mankind. As exemplified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it has a tremendous potential for innovation and growth in blue economy sectors. Due to the inherent complexity of the natural system, the answers to many scientific and societal questions are unknown, and the impacts of the cumulative stresses imposed by anthropogenic pressures (such as pollution) and climate change are difficult to assess and forecast. A major challenge for the scientific community making observations of the coastal marine environment is to integrate observations of Essential Ocean Variables for physical, biogeochemical, and biological... |

Designing optimal observation networks in coastal oceans remains one of the major challenges towards the implementation of future efficient Integrated Ocean Observing Systems to monitor the coastal environment. In the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel, the diversity of involved processes (e.g. tidally-driven circulation, plume dynamics) requires to adapt observing systems to the specific targeted environments. Also important is the requirement for those systems to sustain coastal applications. Two observational network design experiments have been implemented for the spring season in two regions: the Loire River plume (northern part of the Bay of Biscay) and the Western English Channel. The method used to perform these experiments is based on the ArM... |
