Aquaculture of Microalgae in New-Caledonia (AMICAL): development of a co2 supply device for intensive microalgae culture. assessment of the device with carbon budget of cultures in microcosm. ArchiMer
Nakagawa, Kento; Coulombier, Noemie; Le Dean, Loic; Brun, Pierre; Chim, Liet.
Aquaculture diversification has been set as a major policy by New Caledonia public authorities. This has been set up to carry by ADECAL Technopole which carries projects in view of developing cultivation marine species native from Caledonian waters. In this context, the development of micro-algal cultures has been identified as a priority. The study presented has been co-funded by Glencore company in New Caledonia and achieved under the program entitled Aquaculture of MIcro-algae in new-CALedonia (AMICAL) and has two objectives: (i) designing a device to bring dissolved CO2 into micro-algae cultures with a minimum release in atmosphere of this green-house gas and (ii) to assess this device by carrying out carbon budget of micro-algae cultures in...

Manufacture of "fresh/wet" aquaculture feeds based on by-catches, fish by-products and algae ArchiMer
Doudard, Karine; Chim, Liet; Arhaliass, Abdellah; Przybyla, Cyrille; Baron, Regis.
This work focuses on available bio resources transformation such as by-catches or fish by-products and marine plants (seaweed and microalgae) as ren circuit . The objective is to make this production as autonomous and sustainable as possible and fitted to the idea of circular economy. Thanks to previous projects, it seems that by-catches could be a plentiful source of proteins for fish. The challenge associated with this type of aquaculture formulations relies on the ability to incorporate abundant resources readily available and the significant reduction of certain energy‐consuming steps (such as drying) in order to minimize the environmental impact of a fish feed production. The adequacy of this strategy (fresh raw material and wet feed) with a...

Rearing effect of biofloc on antioxidant and antimicrobial transcriptional response in Litopenaeus stylirostris shrimp facing an experimental sub-lethal hydrogen peroxide stress ArchiMer
Cardona, Emilie; Saulnier, Denis; Lorgeoux, Benedicte; Chim, Liet; Gueguen, Yannick.
This study compares the antioxidant and antimicrobial transcriptional expression of blue shrimps reared according to two different systems, BioFloc Technology (BFT) and Clear sea Water (CW) and their differential responses when facing an experimental sublethal hydrogen peroxide stress. After 30 days of rearing, juvenile shrimps were exposed to H2O2 stress at a concentration of 30 ppm during 6 hours. The oxidative stress caused by H2O2 was examined in the digestive glands of the shrimp, in which antioxidant enzyme (AOE) and antimicrobial peptide (AMP) gene expression were analysed by quantitative real-time PCR. Results showed that rearing conditions did not affect the expression of genes encoding AOEs or AMPs. However, H2O2 stress induced a differential...

Feed intake, molt frequency, tissue growth, feed efficiency and energy budget during a molt cycle of mud crab juveniles, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), fed on different practical diets with graded levels of soy protein concentrate as main source of protein ArchiMer
Nguyen, Ngoc Thi Bich; Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wantiez, Laurent.
There has been growing interest in the development of mud crab aquaculture in New Caledonia. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. For this purpose, 54 individually housed crabs were allocated to five dietary treatments (n = 10 or 11). The crabs were fed ad libitum, for 81 days with the allocated diets. The apparent digestibilities of dry mater, crude protein and energy were high (96.2-97.3%),...

Biofloc technology applied to rear shrimp Litopenaeus Stylirostris broodstock: An integrated and development research project in New Caledonia and French Polynesia ArchiMer
Chim, Liet; Cardona, Emilie; Lorgeoux, Benedicte; Gueguen, Yannick; Saulnier, Denis; Goguenheim, Jean; Wantiez, Laurent; Cahu, Chantal.
Shrimp farming in New-Caledonia faces up to difficulties. A fluctuating quality of broodstock prevents sustainable production of larvae in quantity and quality. The traditional extensive rearing method of broodstock in outdoor earthen ponds used in New Caledonia raises several issues: poor water quality control and biosecurity. Therefore it is fundamental to modify the broodstock culture strategy in order to achieve an easier water quality management and maximal biosecurity. Biofloc technology (BFT) offers easier water quality management, higher natural productivity, higher level of biosecurity, and could be a good alternative. Since 2011 a R&D program started under the supervision of IFREMER in New Caledonia and French Polynesia in order to study and...

Combined effect of temperature and salinity on osmoregulation of juvenile and subadult Penaeus stylirostris ArchiMer
Lemaire, Pierrette; Bernard, Eric; Martinez-paz, J; Chim, Liet.
In New Caledonia, the "syndrome 93," which results in mass mortalities of farmed shrimp Penaeus stylirostris, occurs during the transitional and the cold seasons. The transitional season is characterized by an important fall in the average water temperature from 28 to 19 degreesC in 2 weeks. Besides this marked temperature fall, there are also nyctemeral temperature changes of up to 7 degreesC in 12 h. The cold season is characterized by an average water temperature of 19 degreesC with extreme lows of 14 degreesC. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of temperature and its variations on the osmoregulatory capacity of juvenile (7-10 g average weight) and subadult (25 g average weight) shrimps subjected to conditions of different salinity....

Evaluation of floating cages as an experimental tool for marine shrimp culture studies under practical earthen pond condition ArchiMer
Castex, Mathieu; Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly; Pham, Dominique.
Scientific and technical studies carried out under semi-intensive farming conditions, with large earthen ponds (Fig 1), to assess the effects of treatments on zootechnical results are highly complex due to the many logistical, economic and/or experimental constraints involved. In our study, we evaluated the use of floatingcages (Paquotte et al., 1998) immersed in earthen ponds as an experimental tool in order to design future powerful and economical expe-riments under semi-intensive farming conditions.

Biofloc contribution to antioxidant defence status, lipid nutrition and reproductive performance of broodstock of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris: Consequences for the quality of eggs and larvae ArchiMer
Cardona, Emilie; Lorgeoux, Benedicte; Chim, Liet; Goguenheim, Jean; Le Delliou, Herve; Cahu, Chantal.
The aim of this study was to determine biofloc contributions to the antioxidant status and lipid nutrition of broodstock of Litopenaeus stylirostris in relationship with their reproductive performance and the health of larvae produced. Shrimp broodstock reared with Biofloc technology (BFT) compared to Clear water (CW) exhibited a higher health status with (i) a better final survival rate during the reproduction period (52.6% in CW against 79.8% in BFT); (ii) higher glutathione level (GSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS), reduced oxidized/reduced glutathione ratio and a higher spawning rate and frequency as well as higher gonado-somatic index and number of spawned eggs. Finally, larvae from broodstock from BFT exhibited higher survival rates at the Zoe 2...

Relative contribution of natural productivity and compound feed to tissue growth in blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) reared in biofloc: Assessment by C and N stable isotope ratios and effect on key digestive enzymes ArchiMer
Cardona, Emilie; Lorgeoux, Benedicte; Geffroy, Claire; Richard, Pierre; Saulnier, Denis; Gueguen, Yannick; Guillou, Gael; Chim, Liet.
The aim of this study was to assess the relative contribution of natural productivity and compound food to the growth of the juvenile blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris reared in a biofloc system. Two experiments were carried out based on the same protocol with three treatments: clear water with experimental diet (CW), biofloc with experimental diet (BF) and biofloc unfed (BU). Shrimp survival was significantly higher in biofloc rearing than in CW rearing. The contribution of the biofloc to shrimp diet was estimated through measurement of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in shrimp and food sources. Different isotopic compositions between feeds were obtained by feeding natural productivity with a mixture rich in fish meal and the shrimps with a...

DEDUCTION : A research project for shrimp farming sustainability in New-Caledonia ArchiMer
Beliaeff, Benoit; Chim, Liet; Della Patrona, Luc; Goyard, Emmanuel; Herlin, Jose; Labreuche, Yannick; Walling, Emilie; Ansquer, Dominique; Brun, Pierre; Castex, Mathieu; Coatanea, Denis; Courties, Claude; De Lorgeril, Julien; Dufour, Robert; Frappier, Julie; Goarant, Cyrille; Huber, Matthias; Lemaire, Pierrette; Lemonnier, Hugues; Loubersac, Lionel; Le Roux, Frederique; Lucas, Ronan; Patrois, Jacques; Peignon, Jean-marie; Pham, Dominique; Ramage, Yannick; Soulard, Benoit; Vic, Marlene; Vourey, Elodie; Wabete, Nelly.
New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government...

Contribution à l'amélioration des survies et performances de reproduction de L. stylirostris en saison fraîche en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Pham, Dominique; Wabete, Nelly; Lemaire, Pierrette; Mailliez, Jean-rene; Broutoi, Francis; Chim, Liet.
Since 1993, the New Caledonian shrimp industry has been faced with cold season mortality outbreaks of multifactorial origin. This pathology called “Syndrome 93” affects as well animals in grow-out ponds as broodstock after their transfer in maturation room, with up to 35% of mortality in 48 hours. From literature data and physiological studies on Litopenaeus stylirostris, several combinations of three abiotic parameters (temperature, salinity and feeding) have been tested during the breeders stocking period. This research allowed us to lower stress factors impact and to propose a transfer protocol which leads to an optimal physiological comfort of the animal. Results showed that survival rate is improved and spawning rates are twice higher. These findings...

Could a diet enriched with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids be considered a promising way to enhance the immune defences and the resistance of Penaeid prawns to environmental stress? ArchiMer
Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Delaporte, Maryse; Le Moullac, Gilles; Galois, Robert; Martin, Jean-louis.
The prawn Penaeus stylirostris (Stimpson), when fed for 28 days with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-enriched feed pellets, demonstrated an enhanced resistance to variations in environmental parameters (a decrease in temperature and salinity over a 4-day period from 28 degreesC to 17 degreesC and from 35 parts per thousand to 10 parts per thousand respectively) and an improvement in their immune defence potential, i.e. increased agglutination titre of plasma and increased respiratory burst of haemocytes.

A soft technology to improve survival and reproductive performance of Litopenaeus stylirostris by counterbalancing physiological disturbances associated with handling stress ArchiMer
Wabete, Nelly; Chim, Liet; Pham, Dominique; Lemaire, Pierrette; Massabuau, J.
The consequences of handling stress (fishing, transfer, eyestalk ablation) on shrimp broodstock are poorly documented. The weakness of farmed shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, during winter is a major problem in New Caledonia, because of seasonal climate (tropical-sub-temperate). The transfer of broodstock in winter from earthen outdoor ponds to indoor maturation tanks in the hatchery (T=20 degrees C, Salinity=35 parts per thousand, fed shrimp) usually leads, after 48 h, to high mortality (up to 70%). Eyestalk ablation to induce ovarian maturation in females leads to further mortality. Starting from a background analysis of physiological disturbances (initial osmoregulatory imbalance) associated with handling stress (Wabete, N., Chim, L., Lernaire, P.,...

Probiotic P-acidilactici application in shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris culture subject to vibriosis in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Castex, Mathieu; Chim, Liet; Pham, Dominique; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Schmidely, P; Mariojouls, C.
We studied the effects of a lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus acidilactici (strain MA 18/5M, CNCM), as a dietary probiotic on growth performance and some nutritional and microbiological aspects of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Experimental shrimp culture was carried out over 10 weeks, using floating cages of 14 m(2) each set in earthen ponds, in a New Caledonia farm affected by "Summer syndrome", a septicaemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo. The experiment design testing probiotic-coated pellets against control was replicated in two earthen ponds. High mortalities, characteristic of Summer syndrome, were observed during the first 2 weeks of the trial. The probiotic improved production in the treated cages from both ponds with increases...

in this study we evaluated the effects of the probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici MA18/5M on shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris (also called Penaeus stylirostris), first on antioxidant defences and secondly on the oxidative stress status in the shrimps' haemolymph and digestive gland. We conducted two experiments with the same protocol in which shrimps were fed two diets for three weeks: a control diet and a probiotic diet containing 1 g of live P. acidilactici MA18/5M kg(-1). In the first experiment, the shrimps were found to be healthy over the trial period; no mortalities and non-detectable signs of infection were recorded. These resulted in high final survival rates (above 90% in both treatments). On the other hand, during the second trial, carried out at...

Evaluation of floating cages as an experimental tool for marine shrimp culture studies under practical earthen pond conditions ArchiMer
Chim, Liet; Castex, Mathieu; Pham, Dominique; Brun, Pierre; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wabete, Nelly; Schmidely, P; Mariojouls, C.
The New Caledonia blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris is commercially produced under semi-intensive rearing conditions. The size of the farming earthen ponds (5–10 ha) and the subsequent production constraints make it difficult to use them as experimental units for random experiments. Moreover, since every pond has its own characteristics, ponds' effects cannot be ruled out, thus making it hard to define true replicates. In order to design future experiments under conditions resembling those used in production, we evaluated the possible use of floating cages as experimental units with the aim of assessing treatment effects with a reasonable statistical power. To this end, two sets of floating cages were placed respectively in two different ponds in a...
