Evidence of a relationship between weight and total length of marine fish in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean: physiological, spatial and temporal variations ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Delpech, Jean-paul; Lazard, Coline; Salaun, Michele; Verin, Yves; Coppin, Franck; Travers-trolet, Morgane.
Weight–Body Length relationships (WLR) of 45 fish species (37 Actinopterygii and eight Elasmobranchii) were investigated. A total of 31,167 individuals were caught and their biological parameters measured during the four quarters from 2013 to 2015, on five scientific surveys sampling the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (ICES Divisions IVb, IVc, VIId, VIIe, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj, VIIIa and VIIIb). Among 45 tested species, all showed a significant correlation between total length (L) and total weight (W). The influence of sex on WLR was estimated for 39 species and presented a significant sexual dimorphism for 18 species. Condition factor (K) of females was always higher than for males. Moreover, a spatial effect on the WLR...

Modelling species distributions using regression quantiles ArchiMer
Vaz, Sandrine; Martin, C; Eastwood, P; Ernande, Bruno; Carpentier, Andre; Meaden, G; Coppin, Franck.
1. Species distribution modelling is an important and well-established tool for conservation planning and resource management. Modelling techniques based on central estimates of species responses to environmental factors do not always provide ecologically meaningful estimates of species-environment relationships and are being increasingly questioned. 2. Regression quantiles (RQ) can be used to model the upper bounds of species-environment relationships and thus estimate how the environment is limiting the distribution of a species. The resulting models tend to describe potential rather than actual patterns of species distributions. 3. Model selection based on null hypothesis testing and backward elimination, followed by validation procedures, are...

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Prigent, M; Bertrand, Jacques; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Fontenelle, G; Foucher, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Rostiaux, Emilie; Trenkel, Verena.
The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes....

The eastern English Channel, the narrow channel of water separating northern France and southeast England is an area of intense human use of the array of resources concentrated into its relative small area. The vulnerability of living resources and their habitats brought together French and British maritime experts within a common project (called CHARM): to create an atlas of marine resource habitats in the eastern English Channel so as to provide planners and decision-makers with the necessary information to help managing the use of its living and non-living resources. This multidisciplinary and richly illustrated atlas provides abundant information on the legal framework and physical environment; benthic invertebrates, fish and their habitats; fishing...

The eastern English Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea through the Dover Strait, is an area where numerous and often conflicting human activities take place. A cross-border multidisciplinary project called CHARM was initiated to provide knowledge and tools for planners and decision-makers to durably manage the shared marine living resources. One such tool was an atlas of fish spatial distributions and modelled habitats, which was used here to investigate ontogenic and seasonal shifts in fish spatial distribution and habitat through a case-study, the dab Limanda limanda. Survey data for several life-history stages (eggs, larvae, coastal nurseries, < and > 1 year old) and seasons were used to map spatial patterns (using...

Systematic conservation planning in the eastern English Channel: comparing the Marxan and Zonation decision-support tools ArchiMer
Delavenne, Juliette; Metcalfe, Kristian; Smith, Robert J.; Vaz, Sandrine; Martin, Corinne S.; Dupuis, Ludovic; Coppin, Franck; Carpentier, Andre.
The systematic conservation approach is now commonly used for the design of efficient marine protected area (MPA) networks. Identifying these priority areas often involves using specific conservation-planning software. Several of these software programmes have been developed in recent years, each of which differs in the underlying algorithms used. Here, we investigate whether the choice of software influences the location of priority areas by comparing outputs from Marxan and Zonation, two widely used conservation-planning, decision-support tools. Using biological and socio-economic data from the eastern English Channel, we compared their outputs and showed that the two software packages identified similar sets of priority areas, even though the relatively...

Eastern English Channel fish assemblages: measuring the structuring effect of habitats on distinct sub-communities ArchiMer
Vaz, Sandrine; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck.
Multivariate and spatial analyses are used to identify and locate fish, cephalopod, and macrocrustacean species assemblages in the eastern English Channel from 1988 to 2004. Four sub-communities with varying diversity levels were identified in relation to depth, salinity, temperature, seabed shear stress, sediment type, and benthic community nature. From 1997 to 2004, some 25% of overall community structure variance could be related to the available environmental descriptors and 20% to persistent factors such as depth, seabed shear stress, sediment, and macro-invertebrate community type. Although there may be significant interannual shifts in overall community structure and composition, the sub-communities identified persisted over time, reflecting the...

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

Spatio-temporal patterns in demersal elasmobranchs from trawl surveys in the eastern English Channel (1988-2008) ArchiMer
Martin, Corinne; Vaz, Sandrine; Ellis, J. R.; Coppin, Franck; Le Roy, Didier; Carpentier, Andre.
Elasmobranchs have life-history characteristics that make them more vulnerable to fishing than many teleost fish. As commercial landings data are usually not sufficient for the monitoring and assessment of elasmobranchs, fisheries-independent data, geostatistics and Geographic Information Systems were used to investigate the spatio-temporal patterns of sharks (6 species), skates (9 species) and stingray in the eastern English Channel. Temporal trends in relative abundance and distributions of total-length frequencies were investigated using data collected over 21 yr from an annual survey using a Grande Ouverture Verticale (GOV) trawl. Temporal trends in relative abundance were examined qualitatively in relation to the reported conservation status for the...
