SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A CASE STUDY OF ISSUES FOR BIOAG AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J.; Akridge, Jay T..
Supply chain management has become an increasingly important topic to agribusiness managers during the past five years. Drivers of this trend include buyers seeking higher levels of customer service and efforts by firms to control costs, especially inventory. This case introduces the reader to supply chain management. It would work well either as part of a capstone course, in a special topics course, or in an executive education course. The case explores some of the issues and dilemmas associated with supply chain management efforts at BioAg, a small Midwestern firm that manufacturers agricultural chemicals that are environmentally sensitive.

Adoption of Internet Strategies by Agribusiness Firms AgEcon
Henderson, Jason R.; Dooley, Frank J.; Akridge, Jay T.; Carerre, Antonio.
This paper explores the factors guiding Internet adoption by agribusiness firms. The relationship between Internet strategies and manager perceptions on the barriers to and catalysts for Internet adoption are analyzed in a supply-chain management framework. Using factor analysis and an ordered Probit model, results indicate that Internet strategies are more likely to be adopted in larger firms with a global scope. Also, manager perceptions regarding the impact of Internet adoption on transaction costs are just as likely to influence adoption as the perceived impacts on more traditional production costs.

HOG PRODUCER INVESTMENT IN VALUE-ADDED AGRIBUSINESS: RISK AND RETURN IMPLICATIONS AgEcon
Jones, Brian R.; Fulton, Joan R.; Dooley, Frank J..
Although producers have been enticed into investment in value-added agribusiness the risk and return impacts have not been quantified. A spreadsheet simulation model is used to evaluate how investments by hog farmers in slaughter plants and other alternatives affect returns and risk. Results suggest that hog producer investment in value-added agribusiness is efficient.

U.S. Market Potential For Dried Distillers Grain With Solubles AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J..
Prior research presumes that the U.S. livestock feed demand for dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) can accommodate the rapid growth in DDGS production. The objective of this work is to reexamine the market potential for DDGS by considering factors that limit the adoption rate of DDGS. An estimate of DDGS market size requires information about DDGS inclusion rates, animal populations, and adoption rates. The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry will saturate the dairy and hog markets for DDGS by the end of 2009, while the beef and poultry use must triple to consume all available product. One must be circumspect of these forecasts for three reasons. First, the supply of DDGS is contingent on ethanol production. If the downturn in ethanol...

ADOPTION OF E-COMMERCE STRATEGIES FOR AGRIBUSINESS FIRMS AgEcon
Henderson, Jason R.; Dooley, Frank J.; Akridge, Jay T..
This paper analyzes the factors guiding Internet and e-commerce implementation by agribusiness firms. The relationship between Internet/e-commerce strategies and manager perceptions on the barriers and factors to e-commerce adoption are analyzed in a supply-chain management framework. Using factor analysis and an ordered Probit model, results indicate that the implementation of Internet/e-commerce strategies is more likely to be adopted in larger firms with a global scope. Also, manager perceptions regarding supply-chain functions influencing transaction costs are more strongly associated with Internet/e-commerce adoption than other functions influencing production costs.

THE EFFECT OF A CHANGING MARKET MIX IN SEED CORN ON INVENTORY COSTS AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J.; Kurtz, Matthew M..
Changing product characteristics are causing U.S. seed corn companies to reevaluate their inventory strategies. A simulation model based upon the Economic Order Quantity model is built in @Risk to reflect a shortened product life cycle and product proliferation. Inventory costs levels increase because of increased uncertainty of demand. Empirical results find that shortening the product life cycle and expanding the product line increases total inventory costs by 120.8%, increases the average inventory level (primarily due to added safety stock) by 56.2%, and increases the cost of carryover, stockout cost, and safety stock cost by 143, 165, and 119 %, respectively. To maintain higher levels of customer service with products displaying shorter life...

TRADE IN MINOR OILSEEDS: A SPATIAL EQUILIBRIUM ANALYSIS OF SUNFLOWER AND CANOLA AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey; Satyanarayana, Vidyashankara; Dahl, Bruce L.; Dooley, Frank J..
A spatial-equilibrium model of trade in sunflower and canola (seed, oil, and meal) is used to assess alternative trade policy scenarios and their implications for North American producers. Simulations address effects of the U.S. SOAP program, NAFTA, the GATT agreement, EU supply restrictions, and tariffs in major import markets.

Bulk Fuel Distribution Costs For Cooperatives in North Dakota AgEcon
Dahl, Bruce L.; Cobia, David W.; Dooley, Frank J..
Economic-engineering cost data and a simulation model were used to analyze the impact of sales density, size of sales area, sales volume, and equipment configuration on costs of bulk fuel delivery by cooperatives. Fixed costs accounted for the majority of delivery costs regardless of sales density or size of sales area, at least for the relevant range of these variables for North Dakota. Increasing the radius of a sales area from 5 to 50 miles increased average costs only $.02 to $.09/gal. Doubling sales by either doubling the size of the sales area or the sales density reduced average total costs by nearly 50%. Thus, cooperatives with excess delivery capacity could achieve significant savings if they consolidate to operate closer to the capacity of...

IMPACT OF IDENTITY PRESERVATION OF NON-GMO CROPS ON THE GRAIN MARKET SYSTEM AgEcon
Vandeburg, Jennifer M.; Fulton, Joan R.; Dooley, Frank J.; Preckel, Paul V..
The impact of identity preservation (IP) for genetically modified grains (GMOs) on the grain handling system for a typical region in the Eastern Corn Belt is examined. A cost minimizing linear programming model of the transshipment system from farms to grain elevators to grain users tracks shipments and costs through the marketing system. This study compares two different grain segregation strategies: segregating grain within the elevator and designating specific elevators as IP-only facilities. As the cost per unit for grain segregation increases, the designated plant strategy becomes the most cost efficient strategy.

Effects of Supply Chain Management for Food and Grocery Companies AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J.; Martens, Bobby J.; Blomeke, Phillip.
Mass merchandisers’ entry into food retailing threatens traditional grocers’ market share. In response, traditional grocers and food manufacturers adopted Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) as an industry-wide set of supply chain management strategies that focused on cutting costs and improving product assortment, thereby improving inventory and financial performance levels. However, research findings and trade press reports question whether adopting supply chain management strategies will achieve these goals. The results of this analysis strongly support the proposition that the adoption of an ECR strategy pays off. However, the growth in profit does not appear to come from improved performance for traditional inventory measures. The driving force...

Market Analysis for Dried Distillers Grain in Indiana AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J..
The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry in Indiana has saturated the local market for the principal co-product, distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). In the near term, Indiana’s livestock industry can be expected to consume up to 895,000 tons of DDGS per year. But given production of 2.7 million tons, Indiana’s ethanol producers will rely on railroads and barges to ship excess production to out-of-state destinations. Livestock producers will have a ready access to DDGS across the state.
