P>The objective of this study was to complement published hake (Merlucius merlucius) sperm motility characteristics by obtention of data more specifically dependent on flagella: beat frequency, flagellar wave amplitude, wave length, number of waves along the length of the flagellum and curvature of the wave. The changes of these parameters are described in relation to the time period elapsed since activation are described using high resolution video images of flagella while quantifying the progression during the swimming period from the activity initiation to full cessation of movement several minutes later. The main characteristic of the swimming period of hake spermatozoa shows a progressive decrease of forward displacement resulting from a cumulative... |

Limited resources in the environment prevent individuals from simultaneously maximizing all life-history traits, resulting in trade-offs. In particular, the cost of reproduction is well known to negatively affect energy investment in growth and maintenance. Here, we investigated these trade-offs during contrasting periods of high versus low fish size and body condition (before/after 2008) in the Gulf of Lions. Female reproductive allocation and performance in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) were examined based on morphometric historical data from the 1970s and from 2003 to 2015. Additionally, potential maternal effects on egg quantity and quality were examined in 2014/2015. After 2008, the gonadosomatic index increased for... |

The movement characteristics of Pacific oyster trochophores have received very little coverage in the scientific literature. Described here are not only changes in the swimming characteristics of Crassostrea gigas trochophores (size: 53-77 mu m) in relation to time after fertilization and to inter-female variation but also the effects of salinity and pH on movement characteristics. The percentage of motile trochophores was measured on images obtained through a dissecting microscope and the Velocity Average Path (VAP) was assessed using a Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) system. At 20 degrees C, the first movements of the trochophores were observed at 6.5 h post-fertilization. The mean (+/- SD) percentage of swimming trochophores and the VAP observed... |

Variable and low egg quality is a major limiting factor for the development of efficient aquaculture production. This stems from limited knowledge on the mechanisms underlying egg quality in cultured fish. Molecular analyses, such as transcriptomic studies, are valuable tools to identify the most important processes modulating egg quality. However, very few studies have been devoted to this aspect so far. Within this study, the microarray-based transcriptomic analysis of eggs (of different quality) of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was performed. An Agilent oligo microarray experiment was performed on labelled mRNA extracted from 16 batches of eggs (each batch obtained from a different female) of sea bass, in which over 24,000 published probe arrays were... |

Because of its rapid growth, its good reputation and the promising aquaculture experiences conducted in Norway and Scotland, cod is considered as a good candidate for cold water aquaculture. The aim of this paper is to present the work carried out in France since 1999: the selection of cod as a promising candidate for aquaculture and the assessment of its rearing performances in this environment. |

Egg production data from individual hand stripped female turbot were collected and analysed over several consecutive spawning seasons, on natural or shifted conditions. Egg quantity, egg viability and number of spawns were examined from one spawning season to the other, and inside the spawning season. These parameters seemed to increase from a year to the next one, except for the oldest fishes. Spawns were spread over a three-month period and occurred at the same time in the period in successive seasons for most females. Egg production seemed related to the feeding level and the earliness of spawning season appeared depended on the growth rate. Without sand substrate in tanks, injuries could increase therefore no significant differences were observed in... |

Bluefin tuna shows adaptative physiology features allowing life in a wide range of physical and climatic parameters like temperature, salinity and hydrostatic pressure, hence the species fulfil the main basic requirements for progressive domestication and rearing in captivity. The high mortalities recorded after handling and the losses observed after abrupt variations of environment in the cages, emphasised the extreme sensitivity to stress of tuna. As consequences, the progresses about the control of tuna biological cycle are very slow due to limited handling possibilities and tuna aquaculture is restricted to fattening of wild fish. At this time, bluefin tuna production progresses without domestication of the species. |

The potential of wreckfish (Polyprion americanus) to breed in captivity was examined. Ovarian activity varied seasonally, with vitellogenesis beginning in November and ending in May. Slow-release implant with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) prevented atresia, and both GnRHa injections or implants at the end of vitellogenesis triggered ovulation after 7 days. Spontaneous spawning was obtained only in one female, and the few eggs produced were of poor viability. Manual stripping and artificial fertilization produced viable gametes and embryos. Therefore, present captivity conditions inhibited final oocyte maturation (FOM) and spawning, but not vitellogenesis and spermatogenesis. GnRHa treatments stimulate FOM and ovulation of viable eggs. |

Reproduction of nodavirus disease was performed by experimental infection of sea bass eggs during fertilization or at larval stage 4 with 2 genetically distinguishable nodavirus strains (Sb1 and Sb2) isolated from sea bass collected along the Atlantic and Mediterranean French coast. The pathogenicity of the virus strains was assigned after detection of the virus by ELISA and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The Atlantic (Sb1) strain was more pathogenic than the Mediterranean (Sb2) strain during the fertilization step whilst both strains were pathogenic following experimental exposure of 4 d old larvae. Virus lesions developed in the brain 4 to 6 d following experimental exposure. Experimental ELISA proved very sensitive for detecting the nodavirus in Sb1 or Sb2... |

Androgenesis is a form of uniparental reproduction leading to progenies inheriting only the paternal set of chromosomes. It has been achieved with variable success in a number of freshwater species and can be attained by artificial fertilization of genetically inactivated eggs following exposure to gamma (gamma), X-ray or UV irradiation (haploid androgenesis) and by restoration of diploidy by suppression of mitosis using a pressure or thermal shock. The conditions for the genetic inactivation of the maternal genome in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) were explored using different combinations of UV irradiation levels and durations. UV treatments significantly affected embryo survival and generated a wide range of developmental abnormalities.... |

A challenge for the aquaculture community has long been the development of harmless techniques for monitoring fish in a tank. Acoustic telemetry has been used to monitor fish swimming behavior, and passive acoustics have been used to monitor fish feeding, but new techniques are needed to monitor non-invasively their numbers and growth rates. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the acoustical total scattering cross section of fish swimming in a tank can be measured from multiple reverberation time series. These measurements have been used successfully to estimate the number of fish in a tank in laboratory conditions, and to characterize their acoustical signatures. Here, we introduce a novel method for acoustically monitoring fish numerical density and... |
