Mesoscale slope current variability in the Gulf of Lions. Interpretation of in-situ measurements using a three-dimensional model ArchiMer
Andre, Gael; Garreau, Pierre; Fraunie, Philippe.
The ECOLOPHY experiments aimed at investigating physical exchanges between coastal and open sea. They were carried out in June and December 2005 over the shelf-break in the North-eastern part of the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea). This area is considered to be the generation zone for the eddy and meandering structures of the Northern Current (NC). The objective of the present work is to examine mesoscale variability of this coastal slope current in the light of available data. Numerical modeling is used to support the field data analysis. ADCP current measurements over a one-year period show that mesoscale activity is maximal in late winter, correlating with the seasonal variability of the NC and, also, partly with local winds, Measured...

Contourite identification along Italian margins: The case of the Portofino drift (Ligurian Sea) ArchiMer
Cattaneo, Antonio; Miramontes, Elda; Samalens, Kevin; Garreau, Pierre; Caillaud, Matthieu; Marsset, Bruno; Corradi, Nicola; Migeon, Sebastien.
A brief review of the published evidence of current deposits around Italy is the occasion to test the robustness of matching bottom current velocity models and seafloor morphologies to identify contourite drifts not yet documented. We present the result of the regional hydrodynamic model MARS3D in the Northern Tyrrhenian and Ligurian Sea with horizontal resolution of 1.2 km and 60 levels with focus on bottom current: data are integrated over summer and winter 2013 as representative of low and high intensity current conditions. The Eastern Ligurian margin is impacted by the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) with modeled mean velocity of bottom current up to 20 cm s−1 in winter 2013 and calculated bottom shear stress exceeding 0.2 N m−2 in water depth of...

Mesoscale and Sub-Mesoscale structures observed during High resolution surveys in Western Mediterranean Basin ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Correard, Stephanie.
The Mediterranean Sea is often referred as a “pocket ocean” exhibiting many processes that are primary interest the global ocean circulation given the opportunity to investigate a large panel of oceanic features in a relatively restrained area. Recent field experiments based on the multi-plateform integrated monitoring MOOSE or on intensive targeted experiment HYMEX revisited the hydrology and the dynamics of the Western Basin. Such approaches emphasized the ubiquity of the fine scale dynamics in the Mediterranean dynamics. An overview of the observed processes during 5 recent fields experiments are  presented and discussed regarding meso- and submeso-scale processes.

Observation of Mesoscale Instabilities of the Northern Current in the North Western Mediterranean Sea: a combined study using Gliders, Surface Drifters, Moving Vessel Profiler and Vessel Data in the Ligurian ArchiMer
Pairaud, Ivane; Garreau, Pierre; Le Berre, David; Fernandez, Delphine; Bellomo, Lucio; Garnier, Valerie.
The Northern Current (NC) is a branch of the general North-Western Mediterranean cyclonic circulation extending from the Ligurian to the Catalan Sea (Millot, Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans, vol. 15, 1991). In winter and early spring, instabilities of this slope current are intense and can generate eddies, meanders and filaments. The study of mesoscale structures is crucial in the coastal area because of their physical and biogeochemical impact on ecosystems. They play a role in water, chemicals and nutrients transport, vertical mixing and possible trapping of biological materials. Results from a combined observational effort put forth in March 2012 during the IMEDIA cruise dedicated to eddy tracking are presented. This work aims at providing...

A multi-model assessment of the impact of currents, waves and wind in modelling surface drifters and oil spill ArchiMer
De Dominicis, M.; Bruciaferri, D.; Gerin, R.; Pinardi, N.; Poulain, P. M.; Garreau, Pierre; Zodiatis, G.; Perivoliotis, L.; Fazioli, L.; Sorgente, R.; Manganiello, C..
Validation of oil spill forecasting systems suffers from a lack of data due to the scarcity of oil slick in-situ and satellite observations. Drifters (surface drifting buoys) are often considered as proxy for oil spill to overcome this problem. However, they can have different designs and consequently behave in a different way at sea, making it not straightforward to use them for oil spill model validation purposes and to account for surface currents, waves and wind when modelling them. Stemming from the need to validate the MEDESS4MS (Mediterranean Decision Support System for Marine Safety) multi-model oil spill prediction system, which allows access to several ocean, wave and meteorological operational model forecasts, an exercise at sea was carried out...

Consequences of radioactive releases into the sea resulting from the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant - Evolution of expert investigation according to the data available ArchiMer
Laguionie, Philippe; Bailly-du-bois, Pascal; Boust, D.; Fievet, B.; Garreau, Pierre; Connan, O.; Charmasson, Sabine; Arnaud, M.; Duffa, Celine; Champion, D..
The accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in March 2011 led to an unprecedented direct input of artificial radioactivity into the marine environment. The Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety was requested by the French authorities to investigate the radioecological impact of this input, in particular the potential contamination of products of marine origin used for human consumption. This article describes the close link between the responses provided and the availability of the data, as well as their nature and ability to meet the requirements of expert investigation. These responses were needed: (i) to evaluate the inputs of radionuclides into the marine environment, (ii) to understand their dispersion in seawater,...

High-resolution observations and tracking of a dual-core anticyclonic eddy in the Algerian Basin ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Stegner, A.; Le Vu, B..
Mesoscale dynamics in the Mediterranean Sea have been investigated for years and anticyclonic eddies are regularly observed features in the Algerian Basin. Here, we used the AMEDA eddy detection algorithm to track and monitor a particular anticyclonic eddy from its birth to its death. The analysis of remote‐sensing datasets (AVISO and SST) revealed that this anticyclone split from an Algerian eddy in October 2015, interacted with the North Balearic Front and merged seven months later, in May 2016, with a similar Algerian eddy. In early spring 2016, a field experiment during the ProtevsMed 2016 cruise thoroughly investigated this eddy, when it was located near the North Balearic Front, taking high‐resolution (Seasoar) hydrological transects, several CTD...

Contourite distribution and bottom currents in the NW Mediterranean Sea: Coupling seafloor geomorphology and hydrodynamic modelling ArchiMer
Miramontes Garcia, Elda; Garreau, Pierre; Caillaud, Matthieu; Jouet, Gwenael; Pellen, Romain; Hernández-molina, F. Javier; Clare, Michael A.; Cattaneo, Antonio.
Contourites are common morphological features along continental margins where currents encounter the seafloor. They can provide long-term archives of palaeoceanography, may be prone to sediment instability, and can have a great potential for hydrocarbon exploration. Despite their importance and increasingly recognised ubiquitous occurrence worldwide, the link between oceanographic processes and contourite features is poorly constrained. In particular, it is unclear under which specific conditions sediments are mobilised, modified and deposited by bottom currents. Here, we aim to determine key bottom current characteristics (velocity and bottom shear stress) affecting contourite deposition, by assuming that recent oceanographic regimes may be extended back...

Downscaling from Oceanic Global Circulation Model towards Regional and Coastal Model using spectral nudging techniques: application to the Mediterranean Sea and IBI area models ArchiMer
Herbert, Gaelle; Garreau, Pierre; Garnier, Valerie; Dumas, Franck; Caillaud, S.; Chanut, Jerome; Levier, Bruno; Aznar, Roland.
In order to favour the downstream from the European MyOcean service of large scale ocean forecasts to the national service of coastal ocean forecasts, studies of new methods improving the downscaling between global or regional ocean models and coastal ones are in progress. In the framework of PREVIMER and MyOcean projects respectively, IFREMER and Mercator Ocean studied in parallel the impact of the spectral nudging method. In the present work, the performance of spectral nudging was assessed using two regional hydrodynamic models: one of Mediterranean Sea and one of the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) area. They are both forced by a coarser global circulation model (GCM) (PSY2V4/Mercator Ocean). This technique prevents large and unrealistic departures between...

Impact of moderate energetic fine-scale dynamics on the phytoplankton community structure in the western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Tzortzis, Roxane; Doglioli, Andrea M; Barrillon, Stéphanie; Petrenko, Anne A; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Izard, Lloyd; Thyssen, Melilotus; Pascual, Ananda; Barcelo-llull, Barbara; Cyr, Frédéric; Tedetti, Marc; Bhairy, Nagib; Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Gregori, Gérald.
Model simulations and remote sensing observations show that ocean dynamics at fine scales (1–100 km in space, day–weeks in time) strongly influence the distribution of phytoplankton. However, only few in situ samplings have been performed and most of them in boundary currents which may not be representative of less energetic regions. The PROTEVSMED-SWOT cruise took place in the moderately energetic waters of the western Mediterranean Sea, in the southern region of the Balearic Islands. Taking advantage of near-real time satellite information, a sampling strategy was defined in order to cross a frontal zone separating different water masses. Multi-parametric in situ sensors mounted on the vessel, on a towed fish and on an ocean glider were used to sample at...

Wave- and current-induced bottom shear stress distribution in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Garreau, Pierre; Le Hir, Pierre; Forget, P.
Simulations of both currents and waves were performed throughout the year 2001 to assess the relative contribution of each to their overall erosive potential on the Gulf of Lions shelf. Statistical analysis of bottom shear stress (BSS) was compared to sediment grain-size distribution on the bottom. The hydrodynamic features of the bottom layer coincide with the distribution of surficial sediments, and three areas with different hydro-sedimentary characteristics were revealed. (i) The sandy inner shelf ( < 30 m) area is a high-energy-wave dominated area but may be subjected to intense current-induced BSS during on-shore winds along the coast and during continental winds mainly in the up-welling cells. (ii) The middle shelf (30-100 m) is a low-energy...

From 2015 to 2018 four field experiments (seven legs) were performed in the Western Mediterranean basin during winter or early spring. The main objectives were the assessment of high-resolution modeling and the observation of mesoscale structure and associated ageostrophic dynamics. Thanks to the intensive use of a towed vehicle undulating in the upper oceanic layer between 0 and 400 m depth (SeaSoar), a large number of very high resolution hydrographic transects (total length about 10 000 km) were measured, observing mesoscale dynamics (slope current and its instabilities, anticyclonic eddies, submesoscale coherent vortices, frontal dynamics, convection events, strait outflows) and submesoscale processes like stirring, mixed-layer or symmetric...
