Wake effects characterization using wake oscillator model. Comparison on 2D response with experiments. ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Cebron, David.
A model using wake oscillators is developed to predict the 2D motion in a transverse plan of two rigid cylinders in tandem arrangement. This model of the wake dynamics is validated with experimental data from previous trials which took place at the Ifremer flume tank in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. The agreement between the model and the experimental results allows using this model as a simple computational tool in the prediction of 2D Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) and, after some futher developments, Wake-Induced Oscillations (WIO) effects.

MaRINET2 Tidal Energy Round Robin Tests—Performance Comparison of a Horizontal Axis Turbine Subjected to Combined Wave and Current Conditions ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Ordonez-sanchez, Stephanie; Facq, Jean-valery; Germain, Gregory; Johnstone, Cameron; Martinez, Rodrigo; Salvatore, Francesco; Santic, Ivan; Davey, Thomas; Old, Chris; Sellar, Brian.
This Round Robin Test program aims to establish the influence of the combined wave and current effect on the power capture and performance of a generic tidal turbine prototype. Three facilities offering similar range of experimental conditions have been selected on the basis that their dimensions along with the rotor diameter of the turbine translate into low blockage ratio conditions. The performance of the turbine shows differences between the facilities up to 25% in terms of average power coefficient, depending on the wave and current cases. To prevent the flow velocity increasing these differences, the turbine performance coefficients have been systematically normalized using a time-average disc-integrated velocity, accounting for vertical gradients...

Experimental and numerical results on VIV and WIO ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Le Boulluec, Marc; Giry, Eric; Fontaine, Emmanuel.
Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) are well-known and related to the majority of cylindrical structures subjected to strong winds or currents. The VIV limit the lifetime of the structure because they increase the forces and so the fatigue. When several structures of this kind are put together in close interaction, the wake effects (Wake Induced Oscillations - WIO) sometimes involve strong instabilities. If these structures are flexible or mobile, oscillations of several diameters can be observed and collisions can occur ([4] & [6]). Such structures are widespread in the oil industry where the extraction of oil in deep water can be done by means of risers. In some cases, risers are connected to a floating support called FPSO (Floating Production Storage...

Experimental study of bubble sweep-down in wave and current circulating tank: Part I—Experimental set-up and observed phenomena ArchiMer
Delacroix, Sylvain; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Billard, Jean-yves.
Bubble sweep-down is a significant issue for the oceanographic vessels, which affect the acoustic surveys. Experimental trials, carried out in the Ifremer wave and current circulating tank on a 1/30 model of the Pourquoi pas?, are presented. The results demonstrate that this kind of experimental facility is well suited to study the phenomenon of bubble sweep-down encountered around the bow of a ship under specific conditions. From these results, two kinds of bubble clouds formation have been observed and analysed: bubble clouds generated by vortex shedding and breaking waves. The vortex shedding bubble clouds appear randomly in all the configurations tested, even without waves or motions. This phenomenon is due to the interaction between the turbulent flow...

Experimental analysis of the shear flow effect on tidal turbine blade root force from three-dimensional mean flow reconstruction ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Druault, Ph.; Ikhennicheu, Maria; Germain, Gregory.
In the main tidal energy sites like Alderney Race, turbulence intensity is high and velocity fluctuations may have a significant impact on marine turbines. To understand such phenomena better, a three-bladed turbine model is positioned in the wake of a generic wall-mounted obstacle, representative of in situ bathymetric variation. From two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry planes, the time-averaged velocity in the wake of the obstacle is reconstructed in the three-dimensional space. The reconstruction method is based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and enables access to a representation of the mean flow field and the associated shear. Then, the effect of the velocity gradient is observed on the turbine blade root force, for four turbine locations...

Experimental study of the near-field impact of an oyster table on the flow ArchiMer
Kervella, Youen; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Facq, Jean-valery; Cayocca, Florence; Lesueur, Patrick.
Oyster farming structures are artificial obstacles which disturb tidal flow and wave propagation. These effects can induce modifications of erosion and sedimentation patterns, turbidity changes, local silting up and can be threatening for the shellfish farming itself. The understanding of the impact of these structures in terms of hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the far-field, i.e. at the scale of a bay, is a very challenging task. In order to investigate the far-field impact, it is very important to understand in the first place all the changes which occur at a smaller scale, i.e. at the scale of a single table for a farm consisting of oyster tables made of metallic wire structures on which porous bags of oysters are laid. This work is carried out...

Boundary layer development and shear stresses measurements around an oyster table ArchiMer
Kervella, Youen; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Facq, Jean-valery; Cayocca, Florence; Lesueur, Patrick.
Oyster tables are artificial obstacles which are laid over muddy or sandy-muddy floors in intertidal areas. This study aims to show the current modifications related to the presence of the oyster table thanks to LDV measurement in a flume tank. Boundary layer development in different geometric configuration is underlined and suggests some important areas of velocity decrease and sediment transport modification. Shear stresses are also calculated near the bottom and around the table. The total shear stress in the water column exhibits an important increase when the flow passes through the oyster table, hence a flow energy decrease through dissipation. This study helps to understand the reasons for the increased sedimentation observed in some natural sites.

Experimental study of the bubble sweep-down phenomenon on three bow designs ArchiMer
Mallat, Bachar; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Druault, Philippe; Billard, Jean-yves.
The bubble sweep-down phenomenon around the oceanographic research vessels generates acoustic perturbations. A specific experimental protocol has been developed in a wave and circulating tank to study this phenomenon. This protocol is used to carry out trials on three different ship models in order to study the influence of the bow geometry on the bubble generation. For different test configurations, bubble clouds are described and compared in terms of area, maximal depth and vertical velocity to highlight bubble cloud dynamics surrounding the three ship models. The relation between the hydrodynamic flow field and the bubble generation is studied by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements to study the phenomenon by the use of phase averaged...

Wake characterization of an undulating membrane tidal energy converter ArchiMer
Träsch, Martin; Déporte, Astrid; Delacroix, Sylvain; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Drevet, Jean-baptiste.
Most of the research done on tidal energy focuses on marine current turbines. Therefore, tidal turbine’s wake is well-documented. The tidal energy converter studied here is based on the fluid-structure interactions that occur between a flexible membrane and an axial flow, resulting in an undulating motion that can be used to harvest energy. This device’s performance had been studied but it is the first time its wake is experimentally characterized from two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements. PIV is synchronized with a motion tracking system that gives information on trajectory and power conversion. Wake measurement gives access to velocity deficit, turbulence intensity and vorticity. Three configurations are tested in order to...

Effet des concrétions marines sur le comportement hydrodynamique de structures circulaires ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Facq, Jean-valery; Baudet, L.; Birades, M.; Schoefs, F..
The presence of marine growth on underwater parts of jackets significantly increases diameter and roughness of tubular members of these structures. This paper escribes an experimental study carried out in the circulating tank of Boulogne-sur-mer which aim to quantify the hydrodynamical drag and added-mass coefficients of a circular cylinder encrusted with rigid and large-size biofouling, such as coral. Two different kinds of roughness are studied and compared to a reference cylinder. These coefficients are obtained from trials with current only, with imposed motions or with a combination of imposed motions and current. Results show that these coefficients are from 1.5 to 4 times higher 1 than those obtained for the reference cylinder. Nevertheless,...

Experimental study of the turbulence intensity effects on marine current turbines behaviour. Part I: One single turbine ArchiMer
Mycek, Paul; Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Pinon, Gregory; Rivoalen, Elie.
The ambient turbulence intensity in the upstream flow plays a decisive role in the behaviour of horizontal axis marine current turbines. Experimental trials, run in the IFREMER flume tank in Boulogne-Sur-Mer (France) for two different turbulence intensity rates, namely 3% and 15%, are presented. They show, for the studied turbine configuration, that while the wake of the turbine is deeply influenced by the ambient turbulence conditions, its mean performances turn out to be slightly modified. The presented conclusions are crucial in the view of implanting second generation turbines arrays. In addition, complete and detailed data sets (wake profiles and performance graphs) are made available to the scientific community in order to encourage further...

Account of ambient turbulence for turbine wakes using a Synthetic-Eddy-Method ArchiMer
Pinon, Gregory; Carlier, Clement; Fur, Arnaud; Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Riyoalen, Elie.
The present paper aims at describing the use of a Synthetic-Eddy-Method (SEM), initially proposed by Jarrin et al. [12], in the 3D Lagrangian Vortex method framework. The SEM method is used here in order to generate a far-field incoming flow with a prescribed ambient turbulence intensity. However, for the account of the diffusive term in the Navier-Stokes equations, a classical Particle Strength Exchange model with a LES eddy viscosity is used. Firstly, the general characteristics of the Synthetic-Eddy-Method will be presented together with its integration in the framework of the developed 3D unsteady Lagrangian Vortex software [27]. The capability of the ambient turbulence model to reproduce a perturbed flow that verifies any turbulence intensity I∞ and...

Experimental investigation of the seabed roughness effect on the hydrodynamical behavior of a submarine cable under current and wave conditions. ArchiMer
Marty, Antoine; Germain, Gregory; Facq, Jean-valery; Gaurier, Benoit; Damblans, Guillaume; Germain, Nicolas; Harris, Jeffrey; Maison, Antoine; Peyrard, Christophe; Relun, Nicolas.
Submarine cable behaviour is experimentally studied in the frame of the France Energies Marines project STHYF. In order to evaluate on-bottom stability of cables placed on rocky seabed with high roughness and submitted to combined wave and strong current, hydrodynamic loads are measured on a fixed slender cylinder closely fixed to a horizontal plate, with or without large roughness. A specified set of load cases (forced oscillations, current, forced oscillation + current) is considered to assess the hydrodynamic loads acting on the cylinder placed near a wall for varying gap-to-diameter ratios. The roughness effects on cylinder loads and on the flow are studied in detail. The result show a significant difference between rough and smooth bottom...

Experimental study of bathymetry generated turbulence on tidal turbine behaviour ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Ikhennicheu, Maria; Germain, Gregory; Druault, Philippe.
In high flow velocity areas like those suitable for tidal applications, turbulence intensity is high and flow variations may have a major impact on tidal turbine behaviour. A three-bladed horizontal axis turbine model (scale 1:20) is positioned in the wake of a square wall-mounted cylinder, representative of specific in situ bathymetric variation, to experimentally study these effects in a current flume tank. Local and global loads are acquired in synchronization with velocity measurements to study the turbine response to flow fluctuations. Velocity measurements need to be obtained close to the turbine, contrary to what is commonly considered, to properly correlate velocity and loads fluctuations. Results show that the loads phase average and their...

Experimental investigation of the turbulent wake past real seabed elements for velocity variations characterization in the water column. ArchiMer
Ikhennicheu, Maria; Germain, Gregory; Druault, Philippe; Gaurier, Benoit.
In high flow velocity areas like those suitable for marine energy application, bathymetry variations create strong velocity fluctuations in the water column. It is therefore essential to characterize the turbulence evolution in the wake of seabed elements which may impact the loads on tidal turbines. For that purpose, experiments are carried out in a flume tank with Re as high as achievable in Froude similitude, with bathymetry variations experimentally represented with various wall-mounted square elements of height H: a cylinder or a cube as unitary obstacles and combinations of these elements followed by an inclined floor to resemble smooth bathymetry changes. The onset flow is a simple boundary layer profile with height 1.3 H and a low turbulence...

Étude expérimentale des performances d’une hydrolienne, soumise aux effets de la turbulence et de l’interaction houle-courant ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit.
In the context of global warming, the extraction of energy by tidal turbines from marine currents must be integrated into the future energetic mix. Being confronted with a difficult marine environment, it is required to know the turbines’ behaviour when they are submitted to realistic solicitations to guarantee an optimal use. In this work, the marine turbine performance is studied when the machine is submitted to a turbulent current or a combined wave-current effect. The physical representation of trials at reduced scale is first described focusing on the incoming flow characterisation and its effects on a turbine model at 1:20 scale. The location and measurement type of the upstream velocity are discussed to accurately define its performance and its...

Étude numérique du comportement d'hydroliennes à axe horizontal : vers une modélisation d'un parc d'hydroliennes ArchiMer
Mycek, Paul; Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Pinon, Gregory; Rivoalen, Elie.

Comparison of bathymetry variation effects on tidal turbine behaviour ArchiMer
Magnier, Maelys; Druault, Philippe; Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Ifremer; Sorbonne Universités.
Areas with strong tidal currents that can be exploited with tidal turbines often have complex bathymetries where the turbulent intensity of these currents can reach very high values. To study the effects of bathymetric variations on the operation of a tidal turbine, an experimental device has been developed in the Ifremer circulation basin. The wake of two kinds of bathymetries, a cylinder with a square base and a cube followed by this same cylinder, are characterized and compared from PIV measurement results. The results show that the wake of the cylinder is more energetic than that of the tandem configuration. The vortex structures that it emits rise to the surface unlike those resulting from the tandem, the cube preventing their development. The effects...
